Do fewer reeds really make it last longer? Yes. Each reed is a wick. Three reeds in a still room use oil more slowly than the full set, so you trade a little throw for a longer life. Start low and add reeds only if you want more scent.
Should I flip the reeds, and how often? Once a week. Flipping brings the saturated end up and refreshes the throw without using more oil. It is the easiest free habit that keeps a diffuser smelling alive instead of flat.
Three habits do most of the work. First, placement: move it out of direct sun and away from AC vents, fans and draughts, because heat and moving air pull the oil up the reeds and empty the bottle faster. Second, reed count: run two or three reeds instead of the full set - each reed is a wick, so fewer reeds means slower, longer-lasting use. Third, flip the reeds weekly to refresh the throw without spending more oil. If you travel, cap or store the bottle so it is not evaporating into an empty room.
