By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated June 2026

A big room does not need a stronger oil - it needs more of it, and more surface area carrying it. I am Sonal, the perfumer behind SOSA, and the single most common mistake I see is a small 50ml bottle with a couple of reeds trying to scent an open-plan living-dining space. Below is how I would actually choose a long-lasting reed diffuser for a large room in India - when to size up to 130ml, how many reeds to run, and when two units beat one.

Quick answers — read this first
What size reed diffuser do I need for a large room? Reach for the 130ml (₹1249-₹1349) rather than the 50ml. A larger reservoir feeds more reeds for longer, which is what an open space needs. Garden Bloom and the rest of the range come in both sizes.

How many reeds should I use in a big room? Use the full set, or close to it. More reeds means a stronger throw across a larger volume of air. Fewer reeds last longer but will struggle to fill an open-plan room.

Is one diffuser enough for a large open-plan space? Often not. For a long living-dining room, two 130ml units placed at opposite ends scent the space far more evenly than one bottle working overtime in a corner.
The short answer
Size up: Choose the 130ml (₹1249-₹1349) over the 50ml for any large or open room.
Reed count: Run the full reed set for a strong throw - large rooms need the surface area.
Multiple units: For open-plan spaces, place two 130ml units at opposite ends rather than over-working one.
Honesty: Heat, draughts and reed count drive longevity. Reviews shown are illustrative. Reed diffusers emit some VOCs - ventilate. No medical claims.
Scent throw by reed count (illustrative, not clinical)Full reed set — strong throw, fastest use4 reeds — balanced, everyday level2–3 reeds — subtle, longest-lasting
Illustrative only. More reeds means a stronger scent throw and faster oil use; fewer reeds is subtler and lasts longer. You control the strength by how many reeds you use - start low and add more if needed.
Straight answer
So how do I choose a long-lasting reed diffuser for a large room?

Start by sizing up. For any large or open room, choose the 130ml (₹1249-₹1349) rather than the 50ml - the bigger reservoir feeds more reeds for longer, which is exactly what an open volume of air demands. Then run the full reed set, not two or three reeds, so the throw actually reaches across the space. And if the room is truly open-plan - a long living-dining run, say - put two 130ml units at opposite ends rather than asking one bottle to do an impossible job from a corner. A scent like Garden Bloom works beautifully here. The principle is simple: large rooms need more oil, more reeds, and sometimes more units - not a louder formula.

Big room maths: 130ml over 50ml, full reed set over a few, two units over one for open-plan. More oil and more surface area, never a stronger formula.

Scenting a large living room? A 130ml Garden Bloom with a full reed set is my go-to for open, welcoming spaces.

Sizing the diffuser to the room

The biggest decision happens before you ever uncap the bottle: matching the reservoir to the volume of air you are trying to scent. Get this right and everything else follows.

Why 130ml for large rooms
A 130ml holds far more carrier than a 50ml, so it can feed a full set of reeds for weeks without running dry. In a big room you want a strong, steady throw, and a strong throw uses oil faster - so you need the larger reservoir to keep it long-lasting rather than burning out in a fortnight.
Guide
Matching size and reeds to room
Room Size Reeds
Small bedroom or study 50ml 2-3
Average living room 50ml or 130ml 4
Large or open-plan room 130ml Full set
Very large / multiple zones 2 x 130ml Full set each

In peak Indian summer the room itself works against you - a 50ml lasts roughly 6 to 8 weeks at around 45°C even in a modest space, and a draughty open room pulls scent away faster still. That is the real argument for the 130ml: not a louder scent, but enough fuel to stay long-lasting in a demanding room.

The honest trade-off
A full reed set in a big room gives you the strong throw you want, but it empties the bottle faster than a subtle setup. The 130ml exists precisely to absorb that - more oil to spend, so a strong throw can still last weeks.
For refills, top up the bottle and add fresh reeds from the reed collection rather than buying a whole new unit.

Reeds, placement and multiple units

Once the size is right, the rest is about surface area and position. A reed diffuser scents the air immediately around it and lets the room circulate the rest, so where you put it matters as much as how many reeds you use.

1
Use more reeds
Run the full set in a large room
Each reed is a wick. More reeds means more surface area pulling oil up and more scent released into the air. In a big room, hold back on reeds and the throw simply will not reach the far side.
2
Place it well
Central, away from vents and sun
A central side table beats a far corner. Keep the diffuser out of direct sun and away from AC vents and draughts - those pull scent away unevenly and shorten the life of the bottle.
3
Add a second unit
Two 130ml for open-plan
For a long living-dining space or two connected zones, two diffusers at opposite ends scent the room evenly. It is also gentler on each bottle than running one flat-out.
Large-room myths
"A stronger formula fills a big room." Throw comes from oil volume, reed count and air movement - not a louder concentrate.
"One 50ml can do a living-dining room." It will fade and empty fast. Size up to 130ml or run two units.
"More reeds always lasts longer." More reeds is stronger but uses oil faster - in a big room that is the right trade, paired with the larger bottle.
A large room needs more oil and more reeds, not a louder formula. Size up, fill it with reeds, and split it across two units if the space is open.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and when I came home to India I kept noticing the same thing on the shelves: lovely bottles, vague labels. Nobody would tell you what the carrier was, or name the notes.

So SOSA reed diffusers use a disclosed CCT coconut-derived carrier, are phthalate-free and IFRA-aligned, name their top, heart and base notes, and are tested in real Indian heat and humidity - not a mild lab climate. Flame-free, heatless, electricity-free, built from real materials.

I would rather you used this guide to buy well than to buy ours by reflex. If another brand discloses its carrier and names its materials, buy it happily. I just think you deserve to know what is scenting your home.

Frequently asked questions

What size reed diffuser is best for a large living room?

The 130ml (₹1249-₹1349), not the 50ml. A larger reservoir feeds a full set of reeds for weeks, which is what an open room needs. The whole range comes in both sizes.

How many reeds should I use in a big room?

Use the full set, or close to it. Each reed is a wick, so more reeds means a stronger throw across more air. Fewer reeds last longer but cannot fill an open space.

Do I need more than one reed diffuser for an open-plan space?

Often yes. For a long living-dining room or two connected zones, two 130ml units at opposite ends scent the room far more evenly than one bottle in a corner - and it is gentler on each unit.

How long will a 130ml last in a large room?

It depends on heat, draughts and reed count. Running a full set in a big, warm room uses oil faster, but the 130ml holds enough to stay long-lasting where a 50ml would fade. Keep it out of sun and away from AC vents to stretch it.

Are SOSA reed diffusers safe to run continuously?

They are phthalate-free, IFRA-aligned, flame-free and heatless, so there is nothing to switch off. Like any fragrance product they emit some VOCs, so ventilate the room. I make no medical claims.
