They work against each other, and that is correct
There is a persistent misunderstanding in commercial scenting that ventilation and fragrance are complementary, and in a facility like this one it causes real money to be wasted. They are not complementary. Air handling is indiscriminate: an extract fan removes whatever is in the air it moves, and it has no way to distinguish between a volatile from a medicated oil and a volatile from a register. So more ventilation always means less of both, and the design question is not how to balance them in one space but how to separate them across spaces. Treatment rooms need a genuine air-change rate and enough turnaround time to use it, because a room reoccupied immediately after a pizhichil never clears. The dispensary needs clean air because medicines are prepared there. Wash and linen areas need extraction because oil-loaded textiles emit continuously and because damp warm rooms develop their own problems. Every one of those five is on the do-not-scent list already, which means that extracting them hard costs you nothing in fragrance terms - a useful and slightly counterintuitive point, because it means the most aggressive ventilation in the building is free of any trade-off. Then the zones where a register belongs, which are the calmer ones. Reception, the waiting area, the lounge, retail and consultation waiting typically run at modest air-change rates, usually air-conditioned with a degree of recirculation and some fresh-air makeup. That is exactly the condition in which a low-level register holds, because the material is not being swept out as fast as it is introduced. This is why the same machine at the same setting behaves so differently in two rooms: in a heavily extracted space you are pouring fragrance into a fan, while in a calm reception a small quantity persists and does real work. It is also why device counts follow enclosed volume rather than floor area, and why a room's ventilation rate should be part of the sizing conversation rather than an afterthought. Now the pressure relationship, which is the elegant part because it solves containment and fragrance economy simultaneously. What you want is air moving from the cleanest zone towards the most loaded one and then out of the building. Both problems are solved by one decision. The common failure is the opposite arrangement, and it is worth describing precisely because it is so widespread in Indian centres. One air-conditioning system serves the whole floor. Return grilles in every room, including treatment rooms, feed a shared plenum or ceiling void. Air is collected, cooled, filtered and redistributed to all rooms including reception. In that configuration, treatment-room air is actively delivered to your waiting area, continuously, regardless of how well your doors close - and the filters gradually accumulate oil aerosol and begin emitting it everywhere on the loop, which is why such buildings tend to smell uniformly rather than locally, and why they smell faintly stale first thing in the morning before anything has happened. This single arrangement defeats every other containment measure, so it is the first thing to check and the highest-value thing to change. The diagnosis is practical: find where the treatment-area return grilles go, and with the system running hold a light tissue at a treatment-room threshold to see which way air crosses it. If air is drawn out of reception towards the treatment side, the relationship is right. If it flows the other way, it is wrong. Three further practical points. First, fresh-air makeup matters for the guest side. A sealed, heavily recirculated reception will hold a register well but will also hold everything else, including whatever drifts in and whatever guests bring with them, so some genuine outside-air supply is worth having even though it costs you a little fragrance. The balance point is that guests should never describe the room as stuffy; a stuffy room with a nice smell is not a premium result. Second, filters and coils are part of this system rather than separate from it. Ayurveda is the one vertical where customers arrive already believing in scent, and that makes me more careful rather than less. We make no dosha, therapeutic or wellness claims. A register in your reception does not detoxify anybody, balance anything or support a treatment. It scents the air of a room, which is a smaller claim and a true one, and in a category full of larger claims a true one is worth more.
The second thing is the oil. An Ayurveda centre already smells of something powerful before you add anything - warm sesame and medicated oils, hot linen, steam, stored herbs. Fragrance is additive. It joins that smell rather than replacing it, so a beautiful register laid over a heavy oil note by six in the evening gives a guest both. The work that actually fixes it is unglamorous: the laundry cycle, extraction over the oil-heating point and the steam chambers, closed linen handling, oil-resistant surfaces.
