I will not give you a number, and I want to explain why rather than just decline. The right amount is set by the relationship and by what the institution allows, and both of those are things only you can see.

Everybody who asks this wants a figure, and I am not going to give you one. Not because the question is unanswerable, but because the number depends on three things a page cannot see: how long you have known the person, who else is giving, and what the institution they work for actually permits.
Quick answers — read this first
How much should you spend on a gift for a teacher? There is no single right number, and any page that gives you one is guessing at your situation. What I can say is that the figure is usually smaller than people expect, that the amount matters far less than the fit, and that a gift which is warmer than the relationship is the most common mistake in this whole category. A ₹749 reed diffuser with a letter that names one specific thing is a better gift than something four times the price with a printed card. Start from how long you have known the teacher, then check what the school allows, then pick a number.

Can a gift be too expensive for a teacher? Yes, and it is a real problem rather than a polite fiction. A large gift from a student is read as a statement about closeness, and where the relationship does not support that reading the teacher is left working out what they now owe and how to respond. In institutions it can be worse: many schools, colleges and employers set a value cap on what staff may accept, some require declarations, and a gift that has to be handed back is far worse than a smaller one given cleanly. Where somebody marks your work or writes your references, keep it modest.

Is it rude to spend very little on a teacher's gift? No. In this category the written note is the gift and the object is what it arrives in, and teachers keep notes long after objects have gone. Spending little and writing properly reads as considered. Spending a great deal and writing nothing reads as an errand discharged. If your honest budget is under ₹300 there is nothing in our range at all, and the right answers are to pool with classmates or to give a letter and nothing else — neither of which is a consolation prize.
The short answer
Short answer: There is no single right number. The amount matters far less than the fit, the right figure is usually smaller than people expect, and a gift warmer than the relationship is the standard mistake in this category. Many institutions also cap what staff may accept. Decide from the length of the relationship, who else is giving, and the rules — then pick a figure.
The pick: If you want one concrete starting point rather than a rule: SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml, plus a handwritten letter. That combination suits more teacher relationships than anything else in the range.
Next step: Tell us the relationship, the occasion and the ceiling, and we will suggest a figure honestly. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
The number you want depends on three thingsHow long have you actually known them?Is this from you alone, or from a group? What does their institution allow?Fit beats amount, every single timeThe right figure is usually smaller
Answer those three questions honestly and the number tends to arrive by itself, usually lower than the one you had in mind when you opened this page.
Straight answer
How much should you actually spend on a teacher's gift, and why refuse a number?
I am not going to give you a single figure, and the refusal is the useful part. Any page that answers this with one number is guessing at three things it cannot see. The first is the relationship. A class teacher you have had since June, a tutor who has come to your house twice a week for six years, and a professor who supervised your dissertation occupy completely different positions, and the gift should reflect which one you are in rather than how grateful you feel. Warmth is set by proximity, not by gratitude — those are different measurements and the second one is usually larger. The most common mistake in this whole category is not spending too little. It is giving something warmer than the relationship, which leaves the recipient holding an object they now have to work out a response to. The second is who else is giving. A gift from one student and a gift from thirty are read entirely differently at the same price. Pooling raises the ceiling and lowers the awkwardness simultaneously, because the gift arrives from a class rather than from a person, and nobody is standing in front. If a group is giving, the sensible figure is higher than any individual should spend alone. The third is what the institution allows. Many schools, colleges, hospitals and employers set a value cap on gifts to staff; some require declarations; some permit a group gift while prohibiting individual ones. This is not a formality. A gift that has to be handed back is a far worse outcome than a smaller one given cleanly, and it puts the teacher in exactly the position you were trying to spare them. Where somebody marks your work, writes your references or supervises your research, read the rule strictly rather than generously. What I will say, firmly, is that the right number is usually smaller than you expect, and that fit beats amount every time. A ₹749 reed diffuser with a letter naming one specific thing is a better gift than a ₹3,499 machine with a printed card, and the person opening it is not auditing the price. Below ₹300 there is nothing in our range at all, and the honest answers there are to pool or to write a letter and give nothing else. If you want a figure for your particular situation, ask us to help choose a gift and we will give you one honestly.
No single number is right. Decide from the relationship, from who else is giving, and from what the institution allows — and expect the answer to be smaller than you thought.
If you want one concrete starting point rather than a principle: SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 for 50ml, plus a handwritten letter. Clean, ungendered, passive, and it suits more teacher relationships than anything else we make.

What the figures people name actually buy

Before the figures, the honest sizing. A 3ml attar is a month or two of occasional wear. A 50ml reed scents one small room, not a floor. A 130ml is the same fragrance in a bigger bottle rather than a stronger one. Knowing that stops you buying a larger number when what you actually wanted was a better fit, which is the error this page exists to prevent.

The three things that set the number

The three things that actually set the number, in the order you should take them.

1
First, the relationship
Warmth is set by proximity, not by how grateful you feel
These are two different measurements and people routinely substitute one for the other. You can be enormously grateful to somebody you do not know well — a professor whose course changed what you wanted to do, a coach who said one useful thing at the right moment — and the gratitude is real while the proximity is not. A gift priced by gratitude and received by somebody at a professional distance lands awkwardly, because the recipient has to respond to a level of warmth that is not actually in the relationship. The test is simple: would this gift look proportionate to somebody who knows exactly how long you have known each other and in what capacity? If it would need explaining, it is too large. Scaling down is accuracy rather than meanness, and the words you attach can carry as much gratitude as you like at any price.
Tip: If you find yourself planning what you will say when you hand it over, to make the size make sense, the size is wrong.
2
Second, who is giving
One student and thirty students are different gifts at the same price
A pooled gift changes the arithmetic and the social register at the same time. It raises what the group can reach — a class that collects comfortably reaches a 50ml reed at ₹749 or a duo at ₹1,498 without anybody being asked for much — and it lowers the awkwardness, because the gift arrives from a class rather than from one person and nobody is standing in front of the others. Many institutions that restrict individual gifts to staff permit group ones for exactly that reason. So if you are deciding how much to spend alone, the honest answer is often: less than you were planning, and talk to the others first. One good thing from everybody beats twenty small things, and it saves the recipient from twenty separate thank-yous.

3
Third, the rules
Institutional caps are real, and they are not a formality
Many schools, colleges, universities, hospitals and employers have something written down about gifts to staff. Some set a value cap, some require a declaration above a threshold, some permit a group gift while prohibiting an individual one, and a few prohibit gifts from students altogether. Find out what applies before anybody spends or collects money, not afterwards. A gift that has to be declined or handed back is a far worse outcome than a smaller one given cleanly, and it creates precisely the awkwardness you were trying to avoid. Where there is a real power relationship — somebody who marks your work, supervises your research, writes your references or employs you — read the rule strictly rather than generously, and keep the gift modest and unmistakably a thank-you.
The SOSA principle
Fit beats amount, every time. A well-chosen small thing with real words attached reads as considered; a large thing with a printed card reads as an errand discharged.
That is an observation about how gifts are read, and we make no claim that any gift at any price changes how a teacher regards the person who gave it.

If you want one figure to start from: ₹749 for a 50ml reed diffuser, plus a letter. It suits more teacher relationships than anything else in the range.

Common budgets, read honestly

The SOSA plan
Common budgets, read honestly
The figure What it really means here
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed DiffuserUnder ₹300
We have nothing. Pool with classmates, or write a letter and give nothing else — which teachers keep longer than almost any object.
₹379 up to ₹500
A 3ml attar. A real gift rather than a token, but a worn one, so it assumes you know something about their taste.
₹749 to ₹1,000
A 50ml reed diffuser. The figure I name most often, because a room gift suits almost every teacher relationship there is.
₹1,500 and above
Visible. Appropriate for a pooled class gift or a relationship of many years, and usually too much from one student of one term.

Every band is set out side by side in the full gift guide by budget, and the empty band at the bottom has a page of its own in teacher gifts under ₹300. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; nothing here is affiliated with any perfume house, designer or school, and no institution is a SOSA customer.

SOSA Adaa Attar
If the honest number is lower: A 3ml attar at ₹379 is a real gift rather than a token — and below ₹300 we have nothing at all, which we say plainly.
No single number, but a reliable starting point

You can be enormously grateful to somebody you do not know well. Gratitude and closeness are different measurements, and only one of them should be setting your budget.

If you would rather have a recommendation than a method: one 50ml reed diffuser, chosen for the room the teacher works in, with a letter that names one specific thing. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Two things this page will not do. It will not give you a single number, because the right one depends on the relationship, on who else is giving and on what the institution permits — and none of those are visible from here. And it will not pretend we have something under ₹300, because we do not. Many schools, colleges and employers cap the value of gifts to staff and some require declarations; check what applies before anybody spends. We make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping, personalisation or stock, and prices are subject to change.

A note from Sonal

This is the question I am asked more than any other, and it almost always arrives as a budget question when it is really a relationship question. People want to work out the number first and the object second. I would do it the other way round, because once you are honest about how well you actually know the person, the number tends to come out smaller than you expected and the choosing gets easier rather than harder.

I also think the fear is pointed the wrong way. Everyone worries about appearing cheap. Almost nobody worries about handing a teacher something they now have to manage — a gift large enough that it has to be acknowledged, explained, perhaps declared, perhaps returned. I have seen far more discomfort caused by the second than by the first, and the first is easily fixed by writing a proper letter.

So the advice I keep giving is to spend less and write more. A ₹749 reed with a note that names one specific afternoon is a complete gift; the same money with a printed card is half of one. This is an ambience and gifting decision and not a claim about therapy, mood, sleep or how anybody will feel about anybody — nothing we sell treats anything or masks an odour, and the teacher decides what belongs in their own room. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on a teacher's gift?
There is no single right number, and any page giving you one is guessing at your situation. The figure is usually smaller than people expect, and the fit matters far more than the amount. A Rs 749 reed diffuser with a letter naming one specific thing is a better gift than something four times the price with a printed card.
Can a teacher gift be too expensive?
Yes, and it is a real problem. A large gift from a student is read as a statement about closeness, and where the relationship does not support that the teacher is left working out how to respond. Many schools and employers also cap what staff may accept and some require declarations. A gift that has to be handed back is worse than a smaller one given cleanly.
Is it rude to spend very little?
No. The written note is the gift and the object is what it arrives in, and teachers keep notes long after objects are gone. Spending little and writing properly reads as considered. If your budget is under Rs 300 we have nothing at all, and the honest answers are to pool with classmates or to give a letter and nothing else.
Does pooling with the class change the right amount?
Yes, in both directions. It raises what the group can reach, so a class comfortably gets to a 50ml reed at Rs 749 or a duo at Rs 1,498. It also lowers the awkwardness, because the gift arrives from a class rather than one person. Many institutions that restrict individual gifts permit group ones for that reason.
What if the school has a limit on gifts?
Then the limit decides, and you should find it out before anybody collects money. Some institutions set a value cap, some require declarations, some allow a group gift while prohibiting individual ones, and a few prohibit student gifts entirely. Where somebody marks your work or writes your references, read the rule strictly rather than generously.
