Is there a single test? Yes. If you cannot say why a particular number is right, it is too high. Say it out loud: this costs this much because. If nothing follows the because except a feeling, the number came from the feeling.
What does the band actually buy? At the floor, a 3ML attar at ₹379 or a 12ML car fragrance at ₹499. In the middle, a 50ML reed at ₹749. At the top, a 130ML reed or a reed duo.
2. Never in proportion to the guilt. This is the failure mode and it is nearly universal. Guilt inflates a number and it feels like sincerity while it does it. The recipient does not experience your guilt; they experience an object with a price on it, and a large price after a mistake reads as a price put on not discussing the thing.
3. Apply the test: can you say why that number? If you cannot say why a particular number is right, it is too high. Not too low. Too high. A number with a sentence behind it about their home or their habits is a good number. A number with only a feeling behind it is a guess dressed up as a gesture.
4. For almost everything here, that lands between ₹400 and ₹1,500. At the floor, a 3ML attar at ₹379 or a 12ML car fragrance at ₹499. In the middle, a 50ML reed diffuser at ₹749. At the top, a 130ML reed at ₹1,249 or a reed duo at ₹1,498.
5. And for a forgotten occasion, use the occasion's own number. If you missed a birthday, the right budget is roughly what you would have spent on that birthday. Not more, because a larger present draws attention to the lapse rather than to them, and not less, because the occasion has not stopped mattering.
The apology itself is words, it comes first, and it is free. No number improves it. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali, India's largest girl-education initiative.
The principle, and the variable that ruins it
Here is the thing nobody says out loud about shopping after a mistake: you are not simply choosing a number, you are choosing one while feeling bad, and feeling bad inflates a number with great reliability. It is the most common error in this whole category. The right size for an apology gift is set by the occasion and by the relationship, and by nothing else. Not by how badly you feel. Not by how badly you think you behaved.
And a bigger number makes an apology gift worse, not better. An expensive gift given after a mistake is read accurately, and what it says is unflattering: it looks like a price has been put on not discussing the thing. It also hands the recipient a job they never asked for, which is deciding whether they have just been paid off, and whether accepting it means the matter is now closed. A large gift transfers your discomfort to them, which is the exact opposite of what you are trying to do.
The test, which is one sentence long
If you cannot say why a particular number is right, it is too high. That is the whole test, and it is usable in a shop, on a phone, at eleven at night. Say the sentence out loud: this costs this much because. If nothing follows the because except a feeling, the number came from the feeling and not from the occasion.
Try it in both directions and see how quickly it works. This costs ₹749 because she has a bedroom that never smells of anything and this needs no plug or water. That is a sentence, and it holds. This costs ₹3,999 because I feel dreadful. That is also a sentence, and it does not hold, because the second half is about you and the object is supposed to be about them.
The honest band, and what sits in it
Since a principle without a number is not much help, here is the number. For almost every apology in this catalogue the useful band is roughly ₹400 to ₹1,500. That is a span of ₹1,100, and it is wide enough to hold a small specific token at one end and a substantial object for a home at the other. The most common right answer sits near ₹749, which is ₹349 above the floor and ₹751 below the ceiling.
Below ₹400 the range genuinely thins out, and under ₹300 there is nothing that works as a gift on its own. Above ₹1,500 you are usually either buying a second bottle for a second room, which is a reason, or buying reassurance, which is not. Neither end of that is a moral judgement; it is just what the price list contains.
| Position in the band | What it buys | When it is right | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor | A 3ML attar, or a 12ML car fragrance from ₹449 | A small lapse, a friend, somebody you see occasionally. Specific and unshowy | ₹379 to ₹499 |
| Middle | A 50ML reed diffuser, ₹749 to ₹849 | The most common right answer. A room they control, and nothing asked of them | ₹749 |
| Upper middle | A 130ML reed, ₹1,249 to ₹1,349, or a 12ML attar from ₹1,149 | A large room, or a close relationship where the words have already happened | ₹1,249 |
| Ceiling | A reed duo, two bottles for two rooms | Two rooms genuinely matter, which is a fact about their home rather than about your conscience | ₹1,498 |

Occasion and relationship, worked through
Sorted by the two inputs that actually matter, with the reason attached to each number rather than left implied. Note that nowhere in this list does the number rise because the mistake was worse.
| Situation | Sensible number | The reason | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Something you said badly, no occasion attached | Often nothing at all | The apology is words. An object with no occasion behind it can read as a request to move on | A conversation, and no purchase |
| A friend or sibling you let down | ₹379 to ₹849 | Small and specific. A friendship does not need a large gesture and can be made awkward by one | Car fragrance ₹499 if they drive |
| A partner, after the conversation has happened | ₹749 to ₹1,349 | Closeness allows a larger object, and the words having happened first is what makes it a gift rather than a substitute | A 50ML or 130ML reed |
| A forgotten birthday or anniversary | Whatever that occasion was already worth | The occasion sets the number. Going higher draws attention to the lapse rather than to them | The present you would have bought anyway |
| A professional apology | Modest, and no universal figure exists | The recipient's employer may set a limit on what they can accept, and an expensive gift can become their paperwork | A 50ML reed at ₹749 |
Why severity is the wrong axis
The instinct almost everybody has is that a worse mistake calls for a bigger gift. It does not, and following that instinct is how people end up making a bad situation slightly worse. A worse mistake usually calls for a longer conversation, not a larger number. The two are not interchangeable, and an object cannot do the work of the conversation no matter what it cost.
One thing before any number at all. An apology is words: what you did, that you understand why it landed the way it did, what you will do differently, and no "but" anywhere in it. A gift delivered instead of those words is not an apology, it is a request to skip the conversation, and it is read that way immediately and accurately. So the words come first, with nothing in your hands, and a gift comes afterwards if it comes at all. No budget on this page changes that order.
So, plainly, and this page will not hedge it: the smaller option here is frequently the correct one, and choosing it is not being cheap. It is the answer. What works after a mistake is small, specific and evidently chosen for this particular person, because the thing your mistake called into question was whether you were paying attention, and a specific gift is the only kind that answers that. A ₹449 car fragrance bought because she drives every day does more than a ₹3,999 device bought because it was the most expensive thing in the shop.
One practical filter sorts a catalogue faster than any price list: somebody who is upset has less patience than usual for anything that requires effort. Which is why an ultrasonic diffuser is a poor apology gift at any price, whether that is Boond at ₹899, Sukoon at ₹1,899 or Megh at ₹5,999. It needs a plug point, it needs water, and it needs fragrance bought separately. That is three jobs handed to somebody who is not in the mood for jobs.
The SOSA edit inside the band
SOSA makes alcohol-free attars as roll-on oils, 15g solid body perfume balms, reed diffusers and car fragrance. There is no alcohol spray eau de parfum and no room spray in the range. Restraint is the register inside every band, and it matters more than the band does. An apology gift should not demand admiration, so the lighter and more neutral end of the range is the right end: Adaa rather than Nawaab among the attars, Morning Freshness rather than Fresh Brew among the reeds. A loud gift after a mistake asks to be noticed, and being noticed is not the job.
| Gift | What it is | The reason that justifies the number | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaa attar | Bergamot, cardamom and jasmine sambac. Alcohol-free roll-on oil, 3ML, 6ML and 12ML | The floor of the band. Right for a friend, a small lapse, or somebody who already wears fragrance | ₹379 to ₹1,149 |
| Lemon car fragrance, 12ML | Alcohol-free, sold as a Hanging bottle for mild scent-throw or a Spray for strong, same price | The floor again, and the most specific thing in the band if they drive most days | ₹499 |
| Morning Freshness reed diffuser | Malabar lemon and mint, 50ML or 130ML, six fibre reeds per bottle | The middle of the band and the most common right answer. The 130ML only if the room is above about 150 sq ft | ₹749 to ₹1,249 |
Versailles
I get asked this more than any other question in gifting, and for years I gave a vague answer because a number felt presumptuous. That was unhelpful. So here is the figure: for almost every apology I am asked about, ₹400 to ₹1,500, and most often around ₹749.
The test came out of the emails. The people whose plans sounded right could always tell me why: she drives, he has a study, the bedroom has nothing in it. The people whose plans sounded wrong could only tell me how they felt. If you cannot say why a particular number is right, it is too high. That sentence has saved more people money than anything else I have written.
And if the number you arrive at is small, that is not a sign you have misunderstood the situation. It is usually a sign you have understood it. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali, India's largest girl-education initiative.
