Five steps, two-day cycle
Check your bottle size
100ml bottle - baseline is 6 to 8 reeds. 200ml bottle - baseline is 8 to 10 reeds. Always start at the lower end of the range. You can add reeds tomorrow. You cannot un-spill oil.
Adjust for room size
Small room under 100 sq ft - subtract 2 reeds from baseline. Medium room 100 to 200 sq ft - keep baseline. Large room over 200 sq ft - add 2 reeds. If you do not know square footage, count the floor tiles - a standard 2x2 tile is 4 sq ft, so 25 tiles is 100 sq ft.
Adjust for desired throw
Soft throw for bedrooms and meditation rooms - subtract 1 reed. Standard throw for living rooms - keep the adjusted count. Strong throw for entryways where you want a first-impression scent - add 1 reed.
Insert and observe for 48 hours
Insert the calculated number of reeds. Set aside the rest in a clean ziplock for later. Wait the full 24-hour first-soak window. Adjustment for SOSA scent profile

Troubleshooting
Remove 2 reeds. Place them aside in a clean ziplock. The room will adjust within 12 hours. You can reinsert later if a guest is coming or you want a temporary boost.
Add 2 reeds. Wait 24 hours. If still too soft, add 1 more. Do not jump straight from 4 to 8 - that is too big a leap and you lose tuning resolution.
Remove 1 reed. The throw drop will be subtle but the life extension is meaningful. Trade 10 percent of throw for 15 percent of life.
Normal. Throw drops as oil level falls. Add 1 reed at week 6. Flip more frequently - every 4 days instead of 7. The diffuser is in its second half of life and needs a small boost.
One diffuser cannot scent an open-plan home effectively. Use two diffusers placed in different airflow zones. One near the entryway, one near the seating area. This works far better than overloading a single bottle.
The physics of reed count, plain English
Each reed is a small chimney for fragrance. The oil climbs up the porous fibre by capillary action and evaporates off the dry top into the room. Add a chimney and you add a second exhaust path. The room receives more scent per hour. The bottle empties faster.
This is why the relationship between reed count and throw is roughly linear up to about 10 reeds, then plateaus. Beyond 10, the bottle neck becomes a bottleneck - it physically restricts how many reeds can sit upright without crowding each other and breaking the capillary path. Real story: the Patna over-scented hall
