"I used six reeds in my living room and the Garden Bloom filled the whole space within a day. Beautifully steady throw for weeks. I've finally stopped lighting candles near my toddler."
"Started with three reeds in my bedroom, Evening Calm - it was exactly right. Subtle, not overpowering. Feels like proper quality, not the chemical blast I used to get from mall brands."
"The Morning Freshness in my bathroom - four reeds, 50ml - has been going for over a month and still smells incredible every morning. The lemon-mint combination is perfect for a small space."
"Placed the Mountain Breeze on my desk - five reeds, 130ml. My WFH focus actually improved. The pine-cedar scent is masculine and clean. Colleagues on video calls always ask what's in the background."
"Fresh Brew in my study corner - Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla. I flip two reeds in the morning and the whole room comes alive. It's the most comforting thing I've added to my home."
"No flame, no electricity, safe with our dog in the house. I appreciated that the instructions said to keep it out of pets' reach and the oil itself smells nothing like harsh cleaners. Real ingredients."
"Refilled my 130ml bottle of Garden Bloom after it ran out. The refill bottle arrived fast from Pune. The quality is consistent - still smells like the original batch. Really impressed with SOSA."
"I was skeptical about a reed diffuser at ₹749 but the Morning Freshness in my bathroom outlasted two imported ones I'd bought at twice the price. The CCT base clearly holds scent differently."

Medium room (bedroom, 80-150 sq ft): 4-6 reeds.
Large room (living room, open plan, 150+ sq ft): 7-10 reeds.
More reeds = stronger throw + faster oil use. Fewer reeds = subtler + longer life. A 50ml diffuser works best with lower reed counts; a 130ml bottle supports higher counts in bigger rooms. Flip weekly to refresh. Add or remove one reed at a time.
British rose + night-blooming jasmine. 7-8 reeds for a living room; 4-5 for a bedroom. Phthalate-free, flame-free.
How reed diffusers actually work — the capillary lever
A reed diffuser has no flame, no electricity, no heat source. What it does have is capillary action — the same physics that pulls water up inside a plant stem. The rattan or fibre reeds are porous, and the scented oil climbs up through those tiny channels by surface tension and evaporation. When the oil reaches the top of the reed, it meets the air and releases fragrance molecules into the room.
This is why the number of reeds matters so much. Each reed is an independent wick. Add more reeds and you multiply the surface area releasing fragrance simultaneously. The scent throw strengthens. But here is the honest corollary: more wicks pulling oil upward also means faster depletion. The same bottle of oil that might scent your bedroom for eight weeks on four reeds could be gone in four weeks if you use eight.
One important honest note: a reed diffuser scents a space and sets ambience. It does not remove odour sources or purify the air. If your bathroom has a persistent damp problem, or your living room has a smoke source, address the root cause. The diffuser layers fragrance on top of what is already there — it does not replace ventilation or cleaning. Learn more in our guide to how reed diffusers work.
The room-size guide — choosing your reed count
After testing diffusers in multiple Indian home environments — from a 60 sq ft Mumbai bathroom to a 250 sq ft open-plan Pune living room — I've settled on practical starting ranges for each room size. These are starting points, not laws. Your ventilation, ceiling height, AC use, and personal scent preference all shift the equation.
Small spaces are the easiest to scent and the easiest to over-scent. Three reeds in a 50 sq ft bathroom can feel strong enough within a few hours; five reeds in the same space might feel overwhelming by evening. Start at 3 reeds. If you want a more noticeable throw when you first enter, go to 4 or 5. Leave it for 48 hours before deciding.
For a small study corner or corridor, 4 reeds is a reliable middle point. The scent will be noticeable to anyone walking past but won't dominate the adjoining room if doors are open.
Best SOSA choice for a small space: Morning Freshness (50ml, ₹749) in a bathroom; Fresh Brew (50ml, ₹849) in a study corner. A 50ml bottle is usually the right size here — it will last well with a conservative reed count.
A standard Indian bedroom is typically 100-130 sq ft, and this is where personal preference diverges most sharply. Some people want a reed diffuser they notice only when they first walk in; others want fragrance present throughout the night. Both are valid.
For a subtle, sleep-friendly throw: 3-4 reeds. The scent will be noticeable without being heavy — ideal for lavender or chamomile-forward diffusers before sleep. For a more present, welcoming feel when guests enter: 5-6 reeds, perhaps using a floral or woody scent like Garden Bloom or Mountain Breeze.
Best SOSA choice for a bedroom: Evening Calm (Himalayan lavender + chamomile). Either size works; the 130ml (₹1299) is worth it if you want to run it for months without refilling.
A large, open-plan space is where most people underestimate how many reeds they need. A single 50ml diffuser with 4 reeds in a 200 sq ft living room with high ceilings and frequent foot traffic will barely register — the fragrance disperses before it can build. Here, 7-10 reeds is the realistic range for a noticeable scent presence.
If you have good natural ventilation (windows open much of the day), or a very high ceiling (12 ft or more), lean toward the higher end. If the room is sealed with AC and relatively compact, 7-8 reeds will likely be sufficient.
Best SOSA choice for a large space: Garden Bloom (130ml, ₹1299) for a welcoming floral living room; Mountain Breeze (130ml, ₹1349) for a home office where you want focus-oriented, clean woody air. Use the 130ml here — a 50ml in a large room with 7+ reeds will run out very quickly.
| Room type | Approx size | Reed count | Scent effect | Best bottle size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | 40-60 sq ft | 3-4 reeds | Fresh, present — noticeable when you enter | 50ml |
| Corridor / entrance | 30-50 sq ft | 3-5 reeds | Welcoming scent trail as guests arrive | 50ml |
| Study / reading nook | 60-80 sq ft | 3-5 reeds | Focused, close-range ambient scent | 50ml |
| Bedroom (standard) | 100-130 sq ft | 4-6 reeds | Subtle (4) to clearly present (6); choose per preference | 50ml or 130ml |
| Guest room | 80-120 sq ft | 5-7 reeds | Welcoming impression for infrequent occupants | 130ml |
| Living room | 150-200 sq ft | 7-9 reeds | Full-room fragrance; guests notice on entry | 130ml |
| Open-plan / large | 200+ sq ft | 8-10 reeds (or 2 diffusers) | Strong presence throughout; use 2 diffusers for best distribution | 130ml × 2 |
50ml vs 130ml — how bottle size changes the reed equation
SOSA reed diffusers come in two sizes: 50ml and 130ml. The size you choose affects not just longevity but how aggressively you should set your reed count.
A practical calibration: for a 50ml diffuser, keep to 3-5 reeds regardless of room size. If the room is large, a 50ml with five reeds will give you some presence, but accept that it won't fill the whole space — it will anchor a corner or a side table. For a 130ml diffuser, the full range of 4-10 reeds opens up, giving you enough oil to sustain even a high-reed count for a meaningful period.
The 130ml is often the more economical choice in Indian homes that want sustained fragrance. You can read more about what makes a reed diffuser last longer in India — including how Indian summer temperatures affect diffusion rate — in our dedicated guide.
When to add or remove reeds
Reed count is not a set-and-forget decision. Here are the signals that tell you to adjust:
If you flip the reeds and still cannot detect the fragrance in the room after 30-60 minutes, the room likely needs more reeds. Add one reed at a time and wait 24 hours before deciding to add another.
Other triggers for adding reeds: you have moved the diffuser to a larger space; you are trying to scent a room before guests arrive and want a stronger immediate impression; the diffuser is in a room with a high ceiling or that opens onto an adjacent space.
If the fragrance gives you a headache or feels overwhelming — particularly common in sealed AC rooms where fragrance builds continuously — remove one or two reeds. The effect will be immediate: a softer, more background throw.
Also remove reeds if longevity is your priority. Each reed you remove meaningfully extends the life of the oil. If you want the diffuser to last for months rather than weeks, dial back to 2-3 reeds and treat it as a subtle background scent.
Flipping: the second lever most people forget
Flipping the reeds — turning them upside down so the oil-saturated end that was in the air goes into the bottle, and the dry end comes up to the surface — is the fastest way to refresh your diffuser's throw without changing the reed count.
Once a week is a sensible flipping frequency for maintaining steady fragrance. When you flip, you bring freshly oil-soaked reed material to the evaporating surface, giving an immediate boost to scent throw. Over the following days it will taper back down as those ends dry. Flip again next week.
A note on flipping technique: wrap a tissue around the reed stems before flipping so you do not drip scented oil on your surface. Always wipe the bottle rim and the surface beneath after flipping. Reed diffuser oils can mark polished, painted, or porous surfaces — be careful with wooden furniture, marble, and lacquered sideboards.
Versailles
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles — one of the world's most respected fragrance schools — and one of the first things they teach you about diffusion is that the same fragrance smells completely different depending on concentration and dispersion surface. Reed count is exactly that: a dispersion surface variable. More surface area, more evaporation, stronger throw.
When I formulated SOSA's reed diffuser line, I chose a low-VOC coconut-derived CCT (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) base specifically because it holds fragrance molecules close and releases them steadily rather than all at once. This means the oil works harder per reed than a lighter carrier would. If you are used to alcohol-based or DPG-based diffusers, you may find SOSA's throw feels different at the same reed count — more controlled, longer-sustaining.
My personal preference at home: four reeds in my bedroom, six in the living room. But every home is different. Start in the middle, adjust by one, and give it two days before you judge.
Common reed diffuser mistakes — and what to do instead
Which SOSA diffuser is right for your room?
Each SOSA diffuser is built around a specific room mood and occasion. Here is the full range with suggested reed counts and best-fit rooms — all phthalate-free, IFRA-aligned, low-VOC CCT base, made in Pune.
| Diffuser | Notes | Best room | Reeds (suggested) | 50ml | 130ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Bloom | British rose + night-blooming jasmine | Living room, entrance, welcoming | 5-8 | ₹799 | ₹1299 |
| Morning Freshness | Malabar lemon + peppermint + eucalyptus | Bathroom, kitchen, mornings | 3-5 | ₹749 | ₹1249 |
| Fresh Brew | Coorg coffee + Kerala vanilla | Study, reading nook, cosy corners | 3-5 | ₹849 | ₹1349 |
| Mountain Breeze | Himalayan pine + sage + cedar | Office, study, masculine living room | 5-7 | ₹849 | ₹1349 |
| Evening Calm | Himalayan lavender + chamomile | Bedroom, relaxation, wind-down | 3-5 (subtle) · 5-6 (present) | ₹799 | ₹1299 |
All five diffusers use a low-VOC coconut-derived CCT base — not alcohol, not DPG. This base holds fragrance molecules closely and releases them steadily, which is why the throw persists rather than spiking and fading. For a full breakdown of what this means for longevity, see our guide on long-lasting reed diffusers in India. For placement decisions beyond reed count, the how to use a reed diffuser guide covers surface choice, safe distances, and daily habits.
On pets: if you have dogs or cats, place any reed diffuser out of their reach. Some fragrance components can affect certain animals. We do not claim SOSA diffusers are pet-safe outright — placed responsibly, out of reach, in a ventilated space is the right framing. If your pet has known sensitivities, consult a vet before use.
