This is the best form in the family. One box, every name on the card, nobody standing in front of anybody else, and an amount that would be awkward from one person and is not from ten.

Almost every difficulty in this family gets easier when a group gives rather than an individual. The amount stops being personal, the gesture spreads across everybody who was supervised, and no one person ends up standing in front of the others. The only hard part left is organising it.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a group of research students give their professor? One thing, from everybody, with every name on the card. A reed duo at ₹1,548 to ₹1,598 is the shape I recommend most: two bottles in one box, substantial on a shelf, and not one degree more personal than a single bottle. For a larger group, the 130ml duo at ₹2,548 or the attar trio in 6ml at ₹1,859. Collect a specific line from each contributor rather than writing one message for everyone — that card is the part your professor will keep.
How do you organise a group gift in a lab? Pick one organiser, set a per-person amount low enough that nobody has to think about it, and make contributing genuinely optional and private. Agree the object before collecting money. Decide the timing together — after the result rather than during any assessment — and choose a quiet moment to hand it over rather than a staged one. Write the number of contributors on the card, which turns a larger object into an obviously collective one. And check the institution's rules on gifts to staff before any money moves.
Who should hand over a group gift? Ideally two or three people rather than one, and preferably including somebody senior in the group and somebody junior. That keeps it from looking like one scholar's gesture with others attached. Do it privately — at the end of a meeting, or in the professor's room — rather than in front of a seminar, because a public handover turns a thank-you into an event and puts the recipient on the spot. If people want to be there, keep it small and short.
The short answer
Short answer: A group gift is the cleanest form in this family: larger without being more personal, and it spreads the gesture across everyone. One organiser, a low per-person amount, contributions optional and private, the object agreed before the money is collected, a card with every name and the number of contributors, handed over quietly after the result.
The pick: The SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 — Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, two dry registers in one box, right for an office and a study together.
How does a research group organise one gift for a professor, and what should it be?
Start by agreeing that it is one gift. Ten separate presents from ten scholars is worse in every respect: it is awkward to receive, it creates an unspoken comparison between the people giving, and it puts anybody who cannot contribute in a visible position. One object from everybody solves all three at once, which is why this is the form I recommend above any other in this family. Then pick an organiser and a number. One person handles it, and the per-person amount should be low enough that nobody has to think about whether to join — a group of ten at a small amount each reaches a ₹1,548 duo comfortably. Make contributing optional and private. Nobody should know who gave what, and anybody who gives nothing should still have their name on the card if they want it there. Agree the object before collecting money, because unwinding a decision after the fact is unpleasant, and a two-line message in a group chat is usually enough: here is what we are thinking, say so if you would rather something else. What to buy. A reed duo is the natural group object — two bottles in one box at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598 in 50ml, or ₹2,498 to ₹2,598 in 130ml for a larger group. Fresh and Grounded pairs Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, two dry registers that suit an office and a study; Day and Night pairs a clean register with a lavender one. The attar trio at ₹1,055, or ₹1,859 in 6ml, is the alternative where the group knows their professor enjoys fragrance. The card is the actual gift. Collect one specific sentence from each person — a moment, a correction, something they said that stuck — rather than one message written on everybody's behalf. Eight specific lines from eight people is something no object competes with, and writing the number of contributors on it makes a larger gift obviously collective. Then the handover: two or three of you, privately, after the assessment is finished, at the end of a meeting rather than in front of a seminar. And check the institution's rules before any money is collected. If you want help sizing it to your group, ask us to help choose a gift.
One organiser, one object agreed in advance, optional private contributions, every name on the card, and a quiet handover by two or three people after the result.
The group object I suggest most often is the SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 — Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze. Two dry registers, one box, and it covers an office and a study between them.
How to size it to your group. Six to ten people comfortably reach a 50ml duo at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598. Twelve or more can reach a 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598, which is genuinely substantial on a shelf. Do not size up beyond what the room can take: a large pair of bottles in a small shared cabin is conspicuous, and conspicuous is the one thing to avoid.
Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze — lemon and mint alongside pine, sage and cedar. Two dry, ungendered registers in one box. Two 50ml at ₹1,548, two 130ml at ₹2,548.
Morning Freshness with Evening Calm. One clean register for a working room and one lavender register for a study at home, which suits somebody who has both. Two 50ml at ₹1,498, two 130ml at ₹2,498.
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box — festive rose, royal oud and night jasmine. ₹1,055 in 3ml, ₹1,859 in 6ml. The recipient picks which register is theirs.
Three parts to organising this well, and the third one is the part everybody rushes.
1
Collecting
Low, optional and private, in that order
The amount per person should be low enough that joining in requires no thought at all. A group of ten reaching a ₹1,548 duo is a small sum each, and that is deliberate — the moment an amount makes somebody hesitate, the gift has started costing more than it should. Make it genuinely optional and genuinely private: one person collects, nobody else knows who gave what, and anyone who would rather not contribute still signs the card. Research groups contain people on very different stipends and in very different circumstances, and a gift that quietly sorts them by what they could afford is not a thank-you, it is a problem. Agree the object first, then collect, then buy.
Tip: Set a deadline. Group gifts fail far more often from drift than from disagreement about what to buy.
2
Handing it over
Two or three people, quietly, after the result
Send two or three of you rather than one, ideally a mix of senior and junior members, so it visibly comes from the group rather than from whoever organised it. Choose a private moment — the end of a lab meeting, or their room — instead of a seminar or a public gathering, because an audience turns a thank-you into a performance and leaves the recipient having to produce a response on the spot. On timing, the family rule holds: after submission is acceptable, after a successful defence better, and after the degree is conferred cleanest. If members of the group are at different stages, use the stage of whoever is furthest along and make sure nobody with a live assessment is the one handing it over.
Two registers, one for the office and one for home.
Eight specific lines beat one paragraph written for everybody
This is the part groups consistently get wrong, and it is the part that survives. The default is one message composed by the organiser and signed by everyone, which is fine and which nobody keeps. The alternative takes a week and costs nothing: ask each person for a single specific sentence — a comment in a viva rehearsal, a paper they were pushed to submit, the week somebody read a chapter twice — and write them out in a single card, each with a name against it. A professor who has supervised a dozen people rarely gets to see the whole picture of what that looked like from the other side. Put the number of contributors on it too, which also makes a larger gift obviously collective.
The SOSA principle
Ask every contributor for one specific sentence rather than writing one message on everybody's behalf. A dozen of those in a single card is the only thing here that no amount of money buys.
That is an observation about what people keep, and not a claim that any card or gift changes how a professor regards the group that gave it.
The group default: Fresh & Grounded — Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, two 50ml bottles at ₹1,548. Dry, ungendered, and right for an office and a study.
Sizing by group, since the only real decision left once you have agreed to pool is how far to go.
The SOSA plan
Group size and what it reaches
How many of you
What that buys, sensibly
Three or four
A 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849, or the attar trio at ₹1,055. Small groups should not stretch to a duo out of obligation.
Six to ten
A 50ml reed duo at ₹1,498 to ₹1,598. This is the shape I recommend most often and it suits almost any room.
Twelve or more
A 130ml duo at ₹2,498 to ₹2,598, or the 6ml attar trio at ₹1,859 where fragrance is known to be welcome.
Any size, strict institution
Whatever the written gift policy allows. Check it before collecting money, not after the box has arrived.
If you are weighing one larger gift against several small ones, that comparison has a page of its own, and the ceiling question is handled in the premium page for supervisors. SOSA is an independent Indian brand, unaffiliated with any perfume house, designer or university, and no institution is a SOSA customer.
If your professor has a cabin and a home study: Day & Night at ₹1,498 — one clean register and one lavender one, so each bottle goes where it belongs.
Size it to the number of people and to the room, and put the effort into the card rather than into the tier. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Check the institution's rules on gifts to staff before you collect a rupee — value caps are common and they apply to group gifts as much as to individual ones, sometimes more strictly. Keep contributions optional and private; research groups contain people in very different financial circumstances and a gift should not quietly sort them. And give after the assessment, never while somebody in the group has work under examination. We make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
When a lab writes to me instead of an individual student, the conversation is always easier, and it took me a while to work out why. It is because the hardest question in this whole category — how do I give something that is proportionate without being presumptuous — mostly dissolves when there are ten names on the card. The group form does the work. All I end up advising on is size and register, which are the easy parts.
The advice I repeat most to groups is about the card rather than the box. Ask everybody for one sentence. Not a signature, a sentence, and a specific one. It takes a week to collect and it produces something a professor who has supervised a dozen people has almost certainly never received — the whole picture of what that supervision looked like from the other side, in a dozen different handwritings.
Scenting a room is an ambience decision and SOSA makes no outcome, therapeutic or medical claim about it; nothing here masks an odour and no product of ours is described as hypoallergenic. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about the attars rather than skin or allergy claims — patch-test, and give the room where anyone may be sensitive. Whether a scented object belongs in a shared department space is the room owner's judgement. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What should a research group give a professor?
One thing from everybody, with every name on the card. A reed duo at Rs 1,548 to Rs 1,598 is the shape I recommend most: two bottles in one box, substantial on a shelf and no more personal than a single bottle. For a larger group, the 130ml duo at Rs 2,548 or the attar trio in 6ml at Rs 1,859.
How do we organise it?
One organiser, a per-person amount low enough that nobody hesitates, contributions optional and private, and the object agreed before any money is collected. Set a deadline, because group gifts fail from drift more often than from disagreement. Check the institution's rules on gifts to staff before you collect anything.
Who should hand it over?
Two or three people rather than one, ideally a mix of senior and junior members of the group, so it plainly comes from everybody rather than from whoever organised it. Do it privately, at the end of a meeting or in their room, and not in front of a seminar. Make sure the person handing it over does not have work currently under assessment.
What goes in a card that several people sign?
One specific sentence from each person, with a name against it, rather than a single paragraph written on everybody's behalf. A moment, a correction, something that was said and stuck. Add the number of contributors, which also makes a larger gift obviously collective. That card is the part a professor keeps.
What if somebody cannot contribute?
Their name still goes on the card, and nobody should know who gave what. Research groups contain people on very different stipends, and a gift that quietly sorts them by what they could afford has stopped being a thank-you. Keep the per-person amount small enough that the question rarely comes up at all.
For a larger group, and a domestic room: Warmth & Bloom — Fresh Brew with Garden Bloom. Two 50ml at ₹1,598, two 130ml at ₹2,598. Warm registers, so keep it out of a shared cabin.
