Are these smaller versions of better products? No. Each is a complete object - the attar is a full 12ml, the candle burns 15 to 18 hours, and the compact is 15g.
Which is the safest? The candle at Rs 379, because it is a decision about a room rather than about her, and it is used up rather than kept.
This is not a compromise budget. It is where most of the range lives
It is worth being clear about what this budget actually buys, because five hundred rupees in most categories means a reduced version of something - a smaller size, a lesser material, the entry model. That is not the case here, and it changes how you should shop. Every object on this page is the full thing: a twelve millilitre attar is the size an attar comes in, a candle burns fifteen to eighteen hours, a compact holds fifteen grams, and a hanging car perfume is the same product at any price in its range. Nothing is a taster. So the decision is between categories rather than between good and better, and the categories do different jobs. The first is the alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees, and it is the most personal thing available at this budget. Twelve millilitres of undiluted perfume oil in a glass roll-on with no alcohol carrier, applied with the roller rather than sprayed - it opens quietly and stays within roughly an arm's length, which makes it wearable in an office, a classroom, a hospital or a small shared flat where a spray is unwelcome. It is also almost certainly a format she does not own, so it competes with nothing on her shelf. Adaa at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk, the broadest of the four and the safest if you are guessing. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood - rose on wood rather than sugar. Mastani at three hundred and eighty-nine is night jasmine and Damask rose. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. The second is the solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees, of which four sit under five hundred. Fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger, spill-proof, no cap to lose, six to eight hours of wear, surviving months in a handbag where a bottle eventually leaks. Its advantage is that it can be chosen on circumstances rather than taste - a commute, travel, a hostel shelf, a job that keeps her away from home all day - and circumstances are much easier to know than preferences. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. Velour at four hundred and seventy-nine is vanilla bean, butter biscuit, toasted almond and whipped cream. Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke. The third is the coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees, which is the lowest-risk object in the entire shop because it is a decision about a room rather than about her. Lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in small batches in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours of burn, in Misty Mornings with Nilgiri orchid and sun-ripened nectarine, Bookshop with cedarwood, sage and lemon, Evening Walks with frankincense and tonka, or Cozy Corner with spiced pear and golden honey. It is consumable, so nothing has to be displayed, found a place or retired later - which matters for anybody who dislikes accumulating objects. And two at seven hundred and fifty-eight rupees, if the budget stretches slightly, reads as a complete gift rather than a token. The fourth option is the car, if she drives. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to four hundred and ninety-nine rupees covers the one space that is entirely hers rather than shared with a household: Jasmine at four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood at four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint at four hundred and eighty-nine and Lemon at four hundred and ninety-nine, with Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud just above at five hundred and nine. Two cautions apply at every price: choose a dry, green or marine register, because a car standing in Indian sun amplifies sweetness past what a driver can escape, and never buy car fragrance to mask a new car's smell, which most owners like and which fades on its own within a few weeks. Two things not to buy in this band. Wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four rupees are inert without a ceramic burner at five hundred and sixty-nine, so the pair at one thousand and forty-three is the gift and either half is a task. And the Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees is ultrasonic-only and does nothing without a machine, so it belongs on this page only if she already owns a diffuser. One closing thought that applies across the cluster. At this budget the information you have is worth more than the money you are spending, and a three hundred and seventy-nine rupee object chosen precisely, with two sentences about why, lands harder than something four times the price chosen broadly. That is not a consolation - it is how gifts between siblings actually work.

Versailles
The thing I notice most about people buying for a sister is how much they already know and how little of it they use. You know what she picks up in a shop and puts down again. You know what she has worn since she was nineteen, whether she is fussy about it, which corner of the house she actually sits in. Nobody else choosing a gift for her has any of that - and yet an enormous number of sibling gifts end up being the same safe object everybody else brought.
The second thing is that a sister is probably the most over-gifted person in your life, and from a fairly narrow list: hampers, chocolates, cosmetics sets, something for the house. None of it is bad and all of it is what would have arrived anyway, which is why it carries almost no information. Something modest from outside that list, with two sentences about why you chose it, does more than something expensive inside it. And when she says she does not want anything, she is usually telling the truth - somebody who buys what she wants does not need supply. She needs to be seen.
Two honest things. If she is a serious perfume person, please do not buy her another regular bottle - give her a format she does not own, an attar or a solid perfume or something for the room, because that is the only kind of fragrance gift a collector cannot already have. And if she has a new home, size the gift to the home: our Vaayu is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres, which is a showroom rather than a 3BHK, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one.
