The senior who guided your career at work is the hardest person in this whole family to thank well. Everything you give is visible to colleagues, possibly covered by a written policy, and read against a reporting line that may still exist. Warmth is not the problem here. Optics are.
Quick answers — read this first
What should you give a senior colleague who guided your career? Something modest, suited to their room rather than their person, and sent with a note that names the actual advice. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 is close to ideal — passive, ungendered, and small enough that nobody passing the cabin wonders what it was for. Before you buy, read your employer's gift policy; many organisations set a value limit or require gifts between staff to be declared, and the rules bite hardest where a reporting line exists. The written account of what changed is the part that carries the gift.
Does a company gift policy apply between colleagues? More often than people expect. Most policies are written with clients and suppliers in mind, but a great many extend to anything of value passing between employees, and almost all of them tighten where one person can influence the other's appraisal, promotion or pay. The practical rule is to keep the value obviously below any threshold you might be unsure about. A gift under ₹1,000 rarely troubles anyone. A conspicuous one can oblige a senior person to declare it, return it or explain it, which is a poor way to be thanked.
Why is a room gift better than a personal one for a senior at work? Because it asks nothing of them and tells nobody anything. A reed diffuser sits on a shelf in a cabin or on the corner of a desk; it needs no power, it is not worn, and it carries no implication about taste, body or habits. A worn fragrance does the opposite — it is chosen for a person, it assumes you know what they like, and it raises a question about sensitivity you cannot answer from outside. Across a reporting line, the version that commits the recipient to nothing is the version that is easy to accept.
The short answer
Short answer: Something modest for their room, with a note that names the advice. A senior inside your own company is seen by colleagues and may be covered by a written gift policy, so keep the object small and obviously below any threshold. A 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 suits a cabin; a 3ml attar at ₹379 only where the relationship is genuinely personal.
The pick:SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry and undecorated, which is the register a working cabin takes without anybody remarking on it.
Next step: Tell us the reporting line, what your policy allows and where it will sit, and we will suggest something at the right size. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
How do you thank a senior at your own company without it being noticed?
Start with the thing that makes this different from every other mentor gift: an audience. An outside mentor receives a parcel at home and nobody else is involved. A senior at your own company receives it at a desk, in a cabin, or on a floor where colleagues can see it, and some of those colleagues know that this person signs off your appraisal. That is not a reason to give nothing. It is a reason to choose something that reads correctly to a stranger. Read the policy first. Most organisations have a written line on gifts, usually drafted with clients and suppliers in mind but frequently extending to anything of value passing between employees, and almost always tightening where one person can influence another's pay, promotion or rating. Five minutes with the intranet is cheaper than a returned parcel, and keeping the value low enough that the threshold never comes up removes the question altogether. Then check the timing. If appraisals are running, if a promotion case is being written, or if you have applied to a team they control, wait. A gift arriving in that window is read against the decision whether or not you meant it that way, which is unfair to a person who has only ever helped you. A month later it is simply a thank-you. Then choose the room over the person. A reed diffuser sits on a shelf, needs no power and nothing switched on, and asks nothing of the body of the person receiving it. A 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849 suits a cabin or a corner of a desk; 130ml at ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 suits a home or a large room, and I would keep that one for somebody who has left the company or moved far enough away that the reporting line is gone. A worn fragrance assumes a knowledge of taste that work rarely gives you, and it raises a question of sensitivity you cannot settle from outside. Then consider giving it from the team. Several people signing one card removes the junior-to-senior optics entirely and makes the gesture easier to accept. And then write the thing that is actually the gift — one piece of advice, roughly when, what you did with it, what happened. If you would like a second view on your own case, ask us to help choose a gift.
Policy first, timing second, room third. A small object for their cabin and a note naming one piece of advice, which is the part nobody else can write.
For a cabin or a corner office, SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet and undecorated, so it sits on a shelf looking like something sensible rather than something costly, which is exactly what you want at work.
Sizing, plainly. A 50ml reed suits a cabin, a desk corner or a small meeting room; a 130ml suits a home or a large room and is more than most workplace relationships need. Nothing in our range sits below ₹300, and the 15ml bottles at ₹299 are refills for an ultrasonic machine rather than gifts. Below that, the letter alone is the honest answer.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet and undecorated — the register a working room takes without anybody remarking on it. Passive, with no power and nothing to switch on. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Clean, ungendered and the hardest scent in the range to dislike, which matters when the desk is shared and the taste is not yours to guess. 50ml ₹749, 130ml ₹1,249.
Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla. Warmer and more particular than the other two, and a good choice only where you know the room is theirs alone. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser in 50ml (₹849) and 130ml (₹1,349). Dry and unsweet - the register that suits a working room, a cabin or a staffroom.
Three checks, and two of them happen before you look at anything.
1
First, the policy and the line
Read the rules before you read any gift list
Most companies of any size have something written about gifts, and most people have never read it. It is usually drafted around clients, suppliers and procurement, but a surprising number of policies also cover anything of value exchanged between employees, and nearly all of them become stricter where one person influences another's appraisal, rating, promotion or pay. The consequence is practical rather than moral: a gift above a threshold can oblige the recipient to declare it, log it or hand it back, and being handed back is the one outcome worse than giving nothing. Keeping the object under ₹1,000 avoids the question in almost every organisation I have come across. If your policy is silent, the reporting line is still the thing to think about, because the optics of a junior giving upward do not depend on a written rule to exist.
Tip: If you cannot find the policy, ask somebody in HR a general question. Nobody minds, and it takes one message.
2
Second, the timing
Not during appraisals, and not while anything is being decided
A gift is read in the context it arrives in. Sent during an appraisal cycle, while a promotion case is being written, or in the weeks after you applied to a team the person controls, it collects a second meaning that you did not intend and cannot remove. The senior receiving it notices this faster than you do, because they have been on that side of the table for years. Waiting costs nothing. A month after the decision, the same object with the same note is unambiguous, and the note is usually better because you can say what actually happened rather than what you are hoping will. The best occasions have a natural edge to them: your last day on a team, their move to another office, the close of a project you worked on together, or the point at which you finally acted on something they told you two years ago.
Dry, woody and quiet — nothing about it announces a price.
Give something for the shelf, not something for the skin
A worn fragrance is the most personal object in this range, and that is exactly what makes it the wrong default across a reporting line. Choosing one for somebody assumes you know their taste, which work rarely tells you, and it raises a question about sensitivity that you have no way of settling from outside. A room fragrance sidesteps all of it. A reed diffuser can sit on a cabin shelf, go home in a bag, or be passed to a colleague, and none of those outcomes requires a conversation. It also survives being seen. Somebody walking past a senior's desk and noticing a small reed diffuser learns nothing, which is the point. Where the relationship really is personal — a mentor who became a friend, somebody who has since retired or left — an attar at ₹379 for 3ml is a different and perfectly good answer.
The SOSA principle
An outside mentor receives a gift in private. A senior at your own company receives it in front of people who know who signs off your appraisal.
That is an observation about where the parcel lands, and we make no claim that any gift affects a rating, a promotion or what a senior thinks of a junior.
For a cabin or a corner office: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet, and never decorative. From ₹849.
One modest object, matched to the room it will sit in and to what your policy allows, arriving with something written. Nothing here needs power, a plug point or an exception. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Three limits worth stating plainly. Check your employer's policy before you buy, because a gift handed back is worse than no gift. Do not send anything while an appraisal, a promotion case or an internal application is open. And there is nothing in our range under ₹300 — the 15ml bottles at ₹299 are machine refills rather than gifts. We make no promise about delivery timing, gift wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
The messages I get about this one usually have the same shape. Somebody has been quietly looked after at work for three or four years by a person two levels above them, that person is now moving on, and the writer wants to mark it properly. Then comes the sentence that gives the game away: they are worried about what it will look like. That worry is correct, and it is worth acting on rather than arguing with.
What I tell them is that the looking-at problem is solved by shrinking the object, not by explaining it. A small reed diffuser on a shelf tells a passing colleague nothing. A large parcel invites a question that the senior person then has to answer, possibly to somebody in HR. Spend ten minutes on the policy, pick something under a thousand rupees, and put the rest of the effort into what you write.
The letter is where the real content goes, and nobody can hand that back. This is an ambience decision and not a claim of any kind — nothing therapeutic, nothing medical, and nothing about what a gift does to a career or to how anyone feels. No product here masks or covers a smell in a room, and the person whose cabin it lands in decides where it sits and whether they use it. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What should I give a senior colleague who guided my career?
Something modest for their room, with a note that names the actual advice. A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 sits in a cabin or on a desk without inviting questions. Check your employer's gift policy first, because many extend to gifts between staff and tighten where a reporting line exists.
Do I need to worry about the company gift policy?
Yes, and it takes five minutes to check. Policies are usually written around clients and suppliers but often cover anything of value passing between employees, and they are strictest where one person affects another's rating or pay. Keeping the object under Rs 1,000 avoids the threshold almost everywhere. A gift that has to be declared or returned is a poor thank-you.
When should I give it?
Not during an appraisal cycle, not while a promotion case is open, and not in the weeks after you applied to a team they control. Wait until the decision has closed. Better occasions have a natural edge: a last day on a team, their move to another office, the close of a shared project.
Is a group gift from the team better?
Usually, yes. Several names on one card removes the junior-to-senior optics entirely, keeps each person's contribution small, and makes the gesture easier for a senior to accept. It also lets you choose one good object rather than several token ones, without anybody looking like they are singling themselves out.
Should I give perfume to a senior at work?
Only where the relationship is genuinely personal and you know their taste. A worn fragrance goes on skin, assumes knowledge work rarely gives you, and raises a question of sensitivity you cannot settle from outside. A room gift avoids all of it. Where you do want something worn, a 3ml attar at Rs 379 is small and unfussy.
Only where the room is theirs alone: Fresh Brew, ₹849 for 50ml. Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla — warmer and more particular, so it needs a room with a door.
