Founder Diaries · New Parent & Baby Shower Gifting Guides

A gift travelling upward in an organisation is read differently from one travelling sideways. Nobody wonders why a colleague sent something; people do wonder, however briefly, why somebody sent something to the person who writes their review. That is not cynicism, it is just how the direction works - and it means an upward gift should either come from the team or be small enough that there is nothing to interpret.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I give my manager who just became a parent? Either something from the whole team, or something small enough to need no interpretation - a coconut-soy candle at Rs 379 or a hanging car perfume at Rs 449.

Why does the direction matter? Because a gift going upward is read for motive, however briefly. From a team that question disappears; from an individual, keeping it modest removes it.

What should a team give? One good object rather than a hamper - a reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849, or a complete Boond system at Rs 1,198 for a larger collection.
The short answer
Short answer: A gift going upward is read for motive, so it should either come from the team or be small enough to need no interpretation. Individually, a coconut-soy candle at Rs 379 or a hanging car perfume at Rs 449 is right. From a team, one good object: a reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849 or a complete Boond ultrasonic system at Rs 1,198. Avoid anything personal, anything expensive, and anything for the baby.
The pick: a SOSA return gift - consumable, no shelf space, from ₹299 a head.
Bulk: 10 to 200+ pieces quoted on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. Rates are not published here.
Gifts for the parents - at a glanceEverybody gifts the baby - almost nobody gifts the parentsNo setup, no decisions, usable with one handConsumable - their home has no spare surfaceFrom ₹299 · for her, him or both
These are gifts for the adults. SOSA does not make products for babies and nothing here is intended for a nursery or for a baby's things - the point is that the mother and father receive something addressed to them. Gifts start at Rs 299, and anything can be checked on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 first.
Straight answer
Should I give my manager a gift after they become a parent, and what?
Yes, but mind the direction - an upward gift is read for motive, however briefly. Two clean routes. From the team: one good object rather than a hamper - a reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849, running two to three months with no upkeep, or a complete Boond system at ₹1,198 with Hotel Collection concentrate for a larger collection. From you alone: something small enough that there is nothing to interpret - a coconut-soy candle at ₹379 or a hanging car perfume at ₹449, handed over in twenty seconds with no audience. Avoid anything personal, anything expensive, and anything for the baby. Ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Upward gifts get read for motive. From the team, or small enough to need no reading. From Rs 379.
If you want one answer for a mixed guest list: hanging car perfume from ₹449, because almost every adult guest drives and almost nobody has done anything about their car. Bulk quantities quoted on WhatsApp.

Gifting upward needs no interpretation

Most guidance on workplace gifting treats all colleagues as one category, which works until the gift has to travel upward. Then a second variable appears that does not exist sideways: direction. A gift from a peer is simply a gift. A gift to the person who sets your objectives, signs your leave and writes your review passes through a brief moment of interpretation - not suspicion exactly, just the small involuntary question of what it is for. That question is usually answered immediately and forgotten, but it is worth designing around, because the entire cost of getting this wrong is social and the entire benefit of getting it right is that nobody thinks about it at all. There are two clean ways to remove the question. The first is to make the gift collective. A gift from the team has no individual motive attached to it - it is the group marking something, which is a normal thing for a group to do, and nobody reads a collection for intent. This is the better route whenever it is available, and it has the side benefit of raising the budget into a range where the gift can actually be useful. The second is to keep it small enough that there is nothing to interpret. A three hundred and seventy-nine rupee candle handed over at a desk does not invite analysis. A four thousand rupee gift from a direct report does, however warmly it is meant, and it also puts the manager in an awkward position: they now have to decide whether to mention it, whether to reciprocate, and how it looks to the rest of the team. Being appropriate here has an upper bound as much as a lower one. Beyond direction, the ordinary rules of workplace gifting apply and tighten slightly. Nothing personal - nothing worn on the body, nothing referencing anybody's physical state, nothing that would read oddly if it were described out loud. Nothing that needs explaining, because a gift table at work moves fast and an explanation delivered to an audience rarely survives the delivery. And nothing for the baby: the family is buying that column in volume, and a gift aimed at the baby quietly makes the subject the manager's absence rather than the event. To be plain: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a child's belongings. So, from you alone. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is the safest object in this situation: instantly legible, obviously well made, addressed to a home rather than a person, and modest enough to require no interpretation whatsoever. Lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours, in Misty Mornings with Nilgiri orchid and sun-ripened nectarine, Bookshop with cedarwood, sage and lemon, Evening Walks with frankincense and tonka, or Cozy Corner with spiced pear and golden honey. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is the other good individual choice and is arguably more useful: in the months after a birth one parent takes over the outside half of the household, which means the paediatrician, the pharmacy at eleven at night, relatives collected from the station, and the drive around the block at midnight with a baby who will not settle. It is also a completely neutral object - a car accessory carries no personal register at all. Hand either one over in twenty seconds at a desk or on the way out, with one sentence and no audience. If your manager is a man, that twenty-second handover matters even more: he will be back at work within days, short of sleep, and will have been asked how's the baby a dozen times before lunch. If your manager is a woman on leave, send it rather than delivering it, because a visit from work is the hardest kind for a new household to host, and say in the note that no reply is needed. From the team, the amount goes up and the temptation is to buy more things. Resist it - a hamper of five small items reads as a budget being spent rather than a decision being made. One good object is better. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees is the right shape: substantial, clearly for the home, no upkeep at all, and running two or three months. Morning Freshness is seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine, each using its own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action. It belongs at an entrance or in a living room, not a nursery. For a larger collection, a complete ultrasonic system: the Boond at eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees with the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine, one thousand one hundred and ninety-eight complete, three to six drops per tank; or the full-size Sukoon at one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine, complete at two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight. Never the machine alone - a device with nothing to run in it is a shopping instruction in good packaging, and it is a particularly poor look from a team. The three systems do not interchange, and reed oil must never go into a machine. Amounts for reference: three hundred and fifty to six hundred rupees individually, one thousand to two thousand from a team. And one last practical thing that is worth more than the object: if your manager is about to take leave, the most useful gift from a team is a clear message that the handover is covered and nobody expects replies. That takes a sentence, costs nothing, and is the only part of this they will actually remember.

1
Direction is the extra variable
Upward gifts get read for motive
Not suspicion - just the small involuntary question of what it is for, aimed at the person who sets your objectives and writes your review. Usually answered instantly and forgotten.
Tip: Design around it anyway, because the whole benefit of getting it right is that nobody thinks about it.
2
Two clean routes
Collective, or small
A gift from the team has no individual motive attached; nobody reads a collection for intent. Or keep it small enough that there is nothing to interpret - ₹379 invites no analysis, ₹4,000 from a direct report does.
3
Then the usual rules, tighter
Nothing personal, nothing to explain, nothing for the baby
A candle at ₹379 is instantly legible and addressed to a home. A car perfume at ₹449 is completely neutral and genuinely useful now.
Tip: From a team: one good object, not a hamper. And if leave is starting, say the handover is covered.
The SOSA principle
A gift far above the level of the relationship puts them in an awkward position: whether to mention it, whether to reciprocate, and how it looks to the team.
Individually Rs 350 to Rs 600. From a team, Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, on one object.

Small enough, or from the team

Modest and legible from an individual; substantial and singular from a team. Nothing here needs explaining, and nothing is for a nursery.

The SOSA scent edit
Alone, or from the team
Scent Why it suits the mood
Alone · candle ₹379 The safest object here - instantly legible, obviously well made, addressed to a home, and modest enough to need no interpretation.
Alone · hanging car perfume ₹449 to ₹509 Completely neutral and arguably more useful - one parent has taken over the driving, the errands and the late pharmacy run.
Team · reed diffuser ₹749 to ₹849 Substantial, clearly for the home, no upkeep, two to three months. One good object rather than a hamper of five.
Team · complete Boond system ₹1,198 ₹899 machine with ₹299 concentrate; Sukoon complete at ₹2,198. Never the machine alone - a particularly poor look from a team.

A note from Sonal

When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.

That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.

One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
