Yes. More reeds finish the oil faster, close to proportionally, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling reeds. What is almost never published is the arithmetic — how many weeks each setting actually costs, and what that works out to as a monthly bill. So here it is, worked out on a 50ml bottle at ₹849, at four, six, eight and ten reeds, with the same sums repeated on refill oil where the answer changes quite dramatically.
Quick answers — read this first
The weeks, on a 50ml: four reeds comfortably past eight weeks, six reeds 6–8 weeks (the stated figure), eight reeds about 5–6, ten reeds about 4–5.

The money, on a ₹849 bottle: roughly ₹370–₹410 a month at four reeds, ₹460–₹610 at six, ₹610–₹735 at eight, and ₹735–₹920 at ten.

The number that changes the answer: the same ten-reed setting run on refill oil at ₹7–8 a millilitre costs around ₹345–₹430 a month — less than six reeds bought as fresh bottles.

The comparison people miss: two bottles at six reeds in two rooms cost less per scented room than one bottle worked at ten, and they cover a great deal more floor.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, and roughly in proportion. Every SOSA 50ml is dosed at six fibre reeds and rated 6–8 weeks there. Eight reeds takes it to about five or six weeks, ten reeds to about four or five, and four reeds pushes it comfortably past eight. The relationship is close enough to linear that you can treat reed count as a dial with a price list attached, which is exactly how I would like people to treat it.
The mechanism: oil climbs the fibre by capillary action and evaporates off whatever length of reed is standing in the air. The rate is governed by total exposed wetted surface, so adding reeds adds surface and the bottle empties faster. It is not a defect or a leak — it is the same process that scents the room, running at a higher setting because you asked it to. A crowded neck can also hold a film of oil that creeps down the outside of the glass, which is why I would not go beyond ten in a 50ml.
Shop: if you have decided to run above six reeds, solve the running cost rather than the reed count — oil-only refills are ₹2,399 for 300ml and ₹3,499 for 500ml, around ₹7–8 a millilitre against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml. Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze from ₹849. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
How much faster does the oil finish with more reeds, and what does that cost?
1. Four reeds. A gentle room and a bottle that comfortably outlasts its stated window — call it nine or ten weeks on a 50ml. On an ₹849 bottle that is roughly ₹370 to ₹410 a month. This is the right setting for a nursery, a small sealed bedroom or anyone who finds fragrance intrusive, and the extra weeks are a bonus rather than the reason.

2. Six reeds. The dosed count. Every strength rating and every duration figure we publish is measured here: 6–8 weeks on a 50ml, 14–18 on a 130ml. Roughly ₹460 to ₹610 a month on an ₹849 bottle. If you are not sure what you want, this is not a default, it is a recipe written for a particular pan.

3. Eight reeds. A noticeably fuller room and about five to six weeks. Roughly ₹610 to ₹735 a month. This is the setting I would suggest for a hall or an open living-dining that is a little larger than the format is comfortable with, and it is a sensible permanent choice if you accept the bill.

4. Ten reeds. As far as I would go in a 50ml. The most presence the format can produce, and about four to five weeks — roughly ₹735 to ₹920 a month. Beyond ten the neck crowds, wicking becomes uneven and oil tends to creep down the outside of the glass.

5. The 130ml behaves identically per reed. It holds more oil, so it has a longer runway, but the count still sets the rate. At six reeds it runs 14–18 weeks; at ten, roughly nine to twelve. Size buys duration, never volume.

6. Refill oil changes the arithmetic more than reed count does. Ten reeds run on a 300ml refill at about ₹8 a millilitre comes to roughly ₹345 to ₹430 a month, which is less than six reeds bought as fresh bottles. If the cost is what is stopping you running the diffuser as you would like, this is the lever, not the reeds.

7. And compare against two bottles before you commit to ten. Two 50ml at six reeds in two rooms is around ₹970 a month for two properly scented spaces, against ₹735–₹920 for one worked hard. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: yes, close to proportionally — 4 reeds beyond 8 weeks, 6 reeds 6–8, 8 reeds 5–6, 10 reeds 4–5 on a 50ml. In money on an ₹849 bottle that is about ₹370–₹410, ₹460–₹610, ₹610–₹735 and ₹735–₹920 a month. Refill oil cuts every one of those figures by roughly half.
SOSA Fresh Brew Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla reed diffuser
The bottle the sums on this page are worked on
SOSA Fresh Brew · Coorg coffee & Kerala vanilla ₹849 / 50ml
9.5 out of 10 on our internal strength scale and the fullest presence in the range, which makes it the composition people are most often tempted to run at eight or ten reeds — and the one where six is most likely to be enough. Six fibre reeds in the box, 6–8 weeks at that count, ₹1,349 for the 130ml at 14–18 weeks. Alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT carrier. Best in living rooms, kitchens and offices; stand it on a tray.

Part one — why the count sets the rate, and why the relationship is nearly linear

Before the arithmetic, the reason it works at all. A reed diffuser has no pump and no fan; oil climbs the fibre by capillary action and leaves from the wetted length standing in the air. The rate of loss is governed by total exposed wetted surface, and reed count is simply the easiest way to multiply that surface. Double the surface and, to a first approximation, you double the rate. It is not exactly linear — reeds standing close together in a neck compete for the same slice of air, and the top of a tall reed dries faster than the fibre can resupply it on a hot day — but it is close enough that treating each reed as a fixed monthly cost is a genuinely useful mental model, which is what the rest of this page is built on.

1
THE VARIABLE
Exposed wetted surface, not the number of sticks
It is worth being precise, because the precision has practical consequences. The rate depends on exposed length multiplied by the number of reeds, not on the count alone. Six reeds standing tall out of the neck present more surface than eight pushed down until only a few inches show, and they will empty the bottle faster. This is why two people can both say "six reeds" and report different bottle lives, and why the honest answer to "how long will it last" always carries a range. When you add reeds, stand them at the same height as the existing ones so the setting means what you think it means; when you want a gentler room without removing reeds, seating them lower is a real and reversible adjustment.
The practical version: if you add reeds, add them at the same height. Mixed heights make your own results impossible to read.
2
WHERE THE LINE BENDS
Ten is the ceiling, and the reason is mechanical
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749 · 9.0/10The cost side of the equation keeps climbing in a straight line long after the benefit side has started to flatten. Somewhere around nine or ten reeds in a 50ml neck, three things happen together: the reeds crowd each other and wick less evenly, the neck holds a film of oil that tends to creep down the outside of the glass and onto whatever the bottle is standing on, and the additional presence in the room becomes hard to distinguish from the previous setting. You are still paying the full monthly cost of every extra reed while receiving less and less for it. That is why ten is where I stop, and why past that point the correct purchase is a second bottle somewhere else in the house rather than an eleventh reed in this one.
The housekeeping note: at eight reeds and above, flip weekly without exception and keep the bottle on a tray. More surface means more residue and more mess.
3
THE SIZE QUESTION
A 130ml does not slow the rate — it lengthens the runway
This is the point most often misunderstood in the whole category, so let me put it in the terms of this page. Reed count sets how fast oil leaves. Bottle volume sets how long that can go on for. A 130ml at ten reeds empties at almost exactly the same rate as a 50ml at ten reeds; it simply has more to lose, so it runs roughly nine to twelve weeks instead of four to five. What it does not do is project further, and I will not sell it as if it does. Where the larger bottle genuinely wins is per millilitre: roughly ₹9.60 to ₹10.40 against ₹15 to ₹17 for a 50ml, which makes a high reed count materially cheaper to sustain. The oil refills win by more again, at around ₹7 to ₹8.

Part two — the arithmetic, in weeks and in rupees a month

The table below is the whole point of this page. Weeks are SOSA's own working figures from in-house testing and customer correspondence, taken on a 50ml bottle; the money is plain arithmetic from the ₹849 price of a 50ml Fresh Brew or Mountain Breeze, rounded, using 4.33 weeks to a month. Your own numbers will differ with room, season and how tall your reeds stand.

The reed-count invoice
Four settings, priced in weeks and in rupees a month
Reeds What the room gets Life on a 50ml Same count on a 130ml Per month at ₹849
6 ★ The dosed setting — every published figure measured here 6–8 weeks 14–18 weeks About ₹460–₹610
4 Gentle background; right for nurseries and small bedrooms Comfortably past 8 weeks — call it 9–10 Roughly 21–23 weeks About ₹370–₹410
8 Noticeably fuller; suits a hall or a larger living room About 5–6 weeks Roughly 12–14 weeks About ₹610–₹735
10 The most the format produces; crowding starts here About 4–5 weeks Roughly 9–12 weeks About ₹735–₹920
10, on refill oil Identical room, different invoice About 4–5 weeks per 50ml poured Not applicable — you reuse one vessel About ₹345–₹430
The honest caveat: the last row is the one worth staring at. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive way to run a reed diffuser is not the reed count — it is whether you are buying oil in 50ml bottles at ₹15–17 a millilitre or in 300ml and 500ml refills at ₹7–8. A ten-reed room on refill oil costs less per month than a six-reed room on fresh bottles. Remember that the refills are oil only; reeds are not sold separately and should be refreshed every few months.

The three purchases the arithmetic points at
The SOSA principle
Reed count is not a setting you choose once. It is a monthly bill you agree to.
Four reeds is about ₹370–₹410 a month on an ₹849 bottle. Ten is about ₹735–₹920. Both are legitimate. Only one of them should be chosen by accident, and it is neither.

Part three — the same numbers stretched across a year

Monthly figures are easy to wave away; annual ones are not, which is why I find this the more useful view. A single 50ml running at six reeds gets through roughly seven and a half bottles a year — about ₹6,300 at ₹849 apiece. Run the same bottle at ten reeds and you are closer to eleven or twelve bottles, near enough ₹9,800. That is a difference of ₹3,500 a year for one room, which is a real sum and one I would rather you saw before you quietly settled into a high reed count because a friend suggested it.

Now run the same two scenarios on oil rather than bottles. Six reeds for a year needs something like 370 millilitres, which is a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 plus a little — call it ₹3,000 for the year. Ten reeds needs nearer 580 millilitres, so a 500ml at ₹3,499 plus a top-up, a little over ₹4,000. Running a room at maximum reed count on refill oil costs less across a year than running it at the standard count on fresh bottles. That single comparison is, I think, the most practically useful thing on this page, and it is the reason I would always rather talk someone into a refill than out of a reed. The refill is oil only — you keep your own glass vessel and your own reeds — and it wants fresh reeds every few months to be worth the money, which is a genuine gap in our range since we do not sell reeds separately.

There is one more comparison to make before anyone commits to ten reeds permanently, and it is the one that most often changes minds. Output per bottle is fixed; the only way to raise the total fragrance in a home is another source. Two 50ml bottles at six reeds, in two rooms, come to about ₹970 a month and scent two spaces properly — against roughly ₹735 to ₹920 a month for one bottle worked at ten in a single space that may still not be covered. The Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 exists for exactly this, and its two compositions meet on green eucalyptus so adjoining rooms do not produce a seam. If the room you are trying to fill is past roughly 250 to 300 square feet of connected open volume, neither answer will satisfy you and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest recommendation.

Ten reeds on refill oil costs less across a year than six reeds bought as fresh bottles.

Part four — choosing your setting, and what to buy alongside it

Everything above, arranged as a decision. Pick the row that describes what you want from the room, not the row that describes the bottle you happen to own.

The setting guide
What you want, what to set, and what to buy with it
What you want Reeds Realistic life on a 50ml What to buy alongside
A calibrated room and the published figures ★ Six 6–8 weeks Nothing — this is what the box is dosed for
The gentlest background, for a nursery or small bedroom Four Comfortably past 8 weeks Evening Calm at 8.9 — a quiet composition to match
A fuller hall or larger living room, permanently Eight About 5–6 weeks A 300ml refill to make the pace affordable
The most the format can give, and you accept the bill Ten About 4–5 weeks The 500ml refill at nearer ₹7 a millilitre
Two rooms rather than one very loud one Six in each 6–8 weeks each A duo set from ₹1,548 — two notes that share a green thread
Not a lever: a bigger bottle at the same count Unchanged 14–18 weeks on a 130ml Buy it for duration, from ₹1,249 — it is not louder
The honest caveat: none of these settings is permanent and all of them are reversible in ten seconds, so treat the table as a starting point and adjust. What I would ask is that you make the change deliberately and then leave it alone for a fortnight before judging — your own nose adapts to a constant within minutes and adapts hardest at home, so the first hour after adding reeds tells you almost nothing useful. A visitor arriving after a week is a far better witness than you are.
Honest notes for buyers: the weeks on this page are SOSA's own working guidance from in-house testing and customer correspondence, not laboratory measurements, and vary with room volume, ceiling height, ventilation and season; the money is arithmetic from verified August 2026 prices, rounded. Strength ratings are positions on SOSA's internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard and not a concentration. The refills are oil only — you reuse your own vessel and reeds — and replacement reeds are not sold as a separate SKU, though we recommend refreshing them every few months. Reed oil never goes in a Sukoon or Boond, and water-based Hotel Collection never goes in a reed bottle. Stand the bottle on a tray, flip with gloves, keep away from children and pets.

A note from Sonal

I put six reeds in every box knowing perfectly well that six sells fewer bottles than ten would. It is not restraint for its own sake. Six is the count each composition was balanced at on the bench, and a fragrance dosed for six and run at twelve is not simply louder — the volatile top of the composition leaves at a rate the base was never written to support, and by the last fortnight the room reads heavier and flatter than I intended.

That said, I would rather people ran ten reeds knowingly than six unhappily. The arithmetic on this page exists so the choice is made with the invoice visible. If a hall genuinely needs eight, put eight in, flip them every week without fail, and buy a refill so the pace does not become a monthly irritation.

What I would gently discourage is drifting upwards. Reeds get added one at a time, usually a week after a guest says something, and nobody remembers doing it — and then in month three a bottle finishes early and the product gets the blame. Count them before you conclude anything. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does using more reeds make the oil finish faster?
Yes, and close to proportionally. On a 50ml rated 6–8 weeks at its standard six fibre reeds, eight reeds gives about five to six weeks and ten gives about four to five. Four reeds runs the other way, comfortably past eight. The count controls the rate at which oil leaves; nothing else on the bottle does.
What does each setting cost per month?
On a ₹849 50ml, roughly ₹370–₹410 a month at four reeds, ₹460–₹610 at six, ₹610–₹735 at eight and ₹735–₹920 at ten. Those are simple sums from the stated windows and the verified price, rounded. Running the same settings on oil refills at ₹7–8 a millilitre cuts each figure by roughly half.
Will a 130ml last three times as long at ten reeds?
No. The reed count sets the rate regardless of bottle size, so a 130ml at ten reeds runs roughly nine to twelve weeks rather than its stated 14–18. What the larger bottle gives you is a longer runway and a better price per millilitre — around ₹9.60–₹10.40 against ₹15–17 — which makes a high reed count cheaper to sustain. It does not project further.
How many reeds is too many?
Ten in a 50ml is where I stop. Above that the neck crowds, the reeds wick unevenly, oil tends to creep down the outside of the glass onto the surface below, and the extra presence becomes hard to tell from the previous setting while the monthly cost keeps rising in a straight line. Past ten, the right purchase is a second bottle elsewhere in the home.
Is it cheaper to run one bottle hard or two bottles normally?
Two normally, if you count scented rooms rather than bottles. Two 50ml at six reeds comes to about ₹970 a month and covers two spaces; one bottle at ten reeds is ₹735–₹920 and covers one, often incompletely. A duo set from ₹1,548 pairs two compositions that share a note, so the two rooms do not clash.
