Are candles or diffusers better for a big living room? For an evening in the room you are sitting in, a candle is lovely and a diffuser cannot compete with the light and the ritual. For the room smelling good all day whether or not you are there, a candle cannot help at all, because it needs someone present and must never be left burning unattended. A reed will hold a small room but not a big one. Judge them on the four things that genuinely differ. Coverage. A candle scents the room it is in, over a radius that depends on the wax, the wick and the room, and it is at its best in the space you are actually sitting in. A reed owns a small room. A machine is rated in cubic metres: a SOSA Vaayu at 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, holds a whole connected floor from one point on the air path. Continuity. This is the real dividing line. A candle works while it is lit and somebody is there. A reed releases continuously but at a small fixed rate you cannot change. Two formats scent a radius. One is rated in cubic metres
A candle scents the room it is in, and how far depends on the size of the wax pool, the fragrance load and how much air is moving. In an open-plan 170 cubic metre living-dining space, one candle perfumes the seating area and not the dining end. A reed does the same thing on a smaller scale. A machine is specified differently: it is rated for a volume of air, and it releases continuously into moving air so the whole connected volume settles at a level. That is why a hotel lobby smells the same near the lift as it does at the entrance, and why a home with three candles smells like three candles. If you are trying to make a large space read as one space, only the volume-rated format does it.

Practical constraints decide more than preference
Flame, water, power, noise and residue
In a house with small children or animals moving through it, an unattended flame is not an option, and a candle should never be left burning in an empty room. In a monsoon month or a coastal flat, a water-misting machine adds humidity to a house whose problem may already be humidity, which is why we recommend the waterless type in those homes even though it costs more; that is a technical reason rather than a commercial one. In a rented flat, the socket may not be where you want the fragrance. A reed solves the socket problem completely, a machine solves the coverage problem completely, and a candle solves the atmosphere problem completely. Match the constraint to the format rather than the other way round.
Tip: never leave a candle burning unattended, near curtains, or in a room with a child or an animal.

Do I still need reed diffusers if I buy a scent machine?
In most homes, yes, for the rooms the machine cannot reach. Scent travels only where air travels, so a bathroom with the door shut, a guest room down a corridor or a study with the door pulled to will not receive fragrance from a machine on the main floor, however strong it is. A reed in each of those rooms is the cheap and correct answer. Rooms whose doors stay open need nothing extra.
Will any of these fix a bad smell in the house?
No. Fragrance does not remove odour molecules, it adds fragrance on top of them, so a stronger machine over a damp cupboard, a bin, a dry drain trap or a pet bed gives you a stronger version of both smells at once.
