Can treatment tables and upholstery hold odours in a chiropractic clinic?
Yes, and they are the worst offenders in the building, for two reasons that have nothing to do with how carefully anyone cleans. The first is porosity. A treatment table is a thin vinyl or PU skin stretched over open-cell foam, and open-cell foam is not a surface - it is a volume of connected air pockets with an internal surface area out of all proportion to the size of the table. Wherever the skin is broken, and on a working table it is always broken somewhere, that volume is in contact with the room: a split seam, the stitch line around a bolster, the perforations and the join around a face cradle. Textile covers, towels and upholstered waiting chairs do the same thing at a smaller scale, because a woven fabric is also mostly space. Compare that with a laminate worktop or a painted wall, which take up almost nothing and are never the thing you are chasing. The second reason is warm contact, and it is the one that explains the pattern owners actually notice. Uptake happens quietly, over months, from skin, hair, oils, lotion and laundered fabric pressed against the material. Release happens when the material is warmed - and the thing that warms your table is a client, at body temperature, lying still on it for thirty to sixty minutes with a face cradle a few centimetres from their nose. So the table is at its most noticeable exactly when somebody is using it, and quiet again by the time you walk in to check. That is why the practitioner is often the last person in the building to smell it. What follows from those two mechanisms is a maintenance answer rather than a fragrance one. Cleaning changes what the outside of a surface smells of; it does not empty the inside. The ranking
Sort the room by porosity and the suspects sort themselves
From most to least: open-cell foam, then a woven cover or towel, then a stitched seam or a perforated cradle edge where the two meet, then the vinyl or PU skin itself, then hard sealed surfaces. The gap between the top and the bottom of that list is enormous. Foam holds a volume; laminate holds a film you can wipe off in one pass. This is why the same cleaning routine leaves a worktop genuinely neutral and a plinth stubbornly not. It also tells you where to put your face during a check: get within a hand's width of the cradle, the seam and the underside of the bolster rather than standing in the middle of the room, because standing up in a treatment room mostly measures the air.
Tip: Check the tables at the end of a busy day rather than first thing. A cold table that has been empty overnight is the least informative version of itself.

The release
Warmth is the trigger, and the client is the heat source
Materials take up slowly and give back when they are warmed, which is the part that makes this problem so hard to observe. Your loaded surface sits quiet and cool between appointments, then a client at body temperature lies on it for the best part of an hour and the surface warms through. Whatever it has been collecting comes back out into the few centimetres of air directly under a face that cannot turn away. So the room reads clean to you, the table reads clean to your hand, and the person in the cradle gets the full version. The same effect explains why an upholstered waiting chair reads warmer at six in the evening than at nine in the morning, after eleven people have sat in it.
Tip: The person best placed to tell you is a long-standing client. Asked directly and privately, they will usually be honest about the cradle.
This is the mechanism behind the whole unscented-cabin rule. Whatever is on the table beats whatever is in the room, and a Vaayu only ever addresses the room.

The reset
Rotation, drying, repair, replacement - in that order
Four things empty or replace a loaded material, and I sell none of them. Rotation first: enough face-cradle covers, towels and drapes that every item is fully dry and rested before it comes back, which usually means two or three times as many as a clinic buys at fit-out. Drying second, and completely - a cover put away faintly damp is worse than one used again straight from the line. Repair third: a split seam or a cracked skin has stopped protecting the foam, and a patch or a re-cover puts the barrier back. Replacement last, because foam and skin have a working life and no routine returns a fifteen-year-old plinth to neutral. Budget for a re-cover the way you budget for a printer.

I learned this in a furniture workshop rather than a laboratory. A foam cutter explained to me that what I was calling a cushion was really a sponge with a coat on, and that everything a sponge is good at - taking things up, holding them, letting them go slowly - it goes on doing whether you want it to or not. I have never looked at an upholstered surface the same way since, and it is why I am so reluctant to sell fragrance into a room full of them.

Frequently asked questions
Do treatment tables really hold odours, or is it the room?
Both are possible, and there is a simple way to tell them apart. Get your face within a hand's width of the cradle, the seams and the underside of the bolster, then stand up in the middle of the room and compare. If the close reading is clearly stronger, the material is the source. If both are the same, you have a room question and the table is being blamed for it.
Does wiping the table down deal with what the foam has taken up?
It does not reach it. A wipe cleans the skin and the top of a seam, and the foam under that skin is a volume rather than a surface, so nothing applied from outside gets into it. A wipe-down is still worth doing on its own terms. Just do not expect it to change what a client meets in the cradle two hours later.
How many face-cradle covers should a practice keep in rotation?
Enough that every cover is completely dry and rested before it comes back, which in a busy practice is two or three times the number bought at fit-out. The failure mode is not dirt, it is turnaround: a cover that goes back on the table before it has fully dried arrives already loaded. Extra sets are the cheapest change on this page.
My room smells fine to me but a client mentioned the table. Who is right?
The client, almost certainly. You are upright, moving and adapted to the building within minutes of walking in. They are prone, still, and breathing at close range from the one surface in the room they cannot move away from. Treat that remark as the most reliable instrument you have and go and check the cradle at the end of a full day.
When is a table cover past saving and due for replacement?
When the skin is split or crazed along the seams, when the foam has gone soft in the places bodies land, or when a rested, dry, well-maintained table still reads strongly at close range. At that point the material has reached the end of its working life and no routine returns it. Re-covering is a maintenance line item, not a failure.
