Founder Diaries · Real Indian Homes · House Locked All Day

Yes — and it is worth being precise about what "only during those hours" means, because two different things are going on. The reason a flat feels stale when you walk in at seven is air exchange: locked for ten hours, it swaps almost no air, the ordinary background odours accumulate and there is nobody inside to stop noticing them. Ventilation on arrival is what addresses that, and it is free. The reason you want fragrance restricted to your occupied hours is waste. Those are two separate problems, and only the second one is solved by buying a machine — which is exactly what a machine is for, and precisely what a reed diffuser cannot do.
Quick answers — read this first
Step one, and it is not a purchase: open two openings on opposite sides for ten minutes when you get in. That is what shifts ten hours of accumulated air. Fragrance does not remove an odour; it sits alongside it.

Step two, for a living room: Sukoon ₹1,899 — 500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. Switch it on when you arrive, off when you go to bed. Nothing runs while you are out.

For a bedroom instead: Boond ₹899 — 300ml, up to about 150 sq ft, around 6 hours, USB, night light. The honest entry point for a bedroom, and not enough for a living room.

The honest gap: there is no timer, no plug-in, no app and no subscription. "Only during the hours we are there" means you switch it on yourself, every evening. A machine that nobody switches on scents nothing, and on those evenings a ₹749 reed would have been the better purchase.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, with an ultrasonic diffuser. Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft, holds 500ml and runs 16–18 hours on low, so an evening's use is a fraction of a tank and nothing at all is consumed in the ten hours the flat is locked. That is the machine's genuine advantage over a reed, and it is a real one: a reed diffuser is continuous and cannot be switched off.
Match the machine to the room, not to the price: Boond ₹899 is 300ml and up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom. Sukoon ₹1,899 is the living-room machine. Megh ₹3,499 is not a coverage upgrade — it has a six-litre tank and around 100 hours of runtime but covers only about 215 sq ft, which is less than the Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine, and if you are buying for coverage it is the wrong purchase.
Shop: Sukoon ₹1,899 with three 15ml scents included; Hotel Collection oils are water-based and ultrasonic-only, 15ml ₹299 as a refill, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799. Reed oil cannot go into a machine and Hotel Collection oil cannot go into reeds; there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. Reeds 50ml ₹749–₹849 and 130ml ₹1,249–₹1,349. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Can I have fragrance only during the hours we are actually at home?
1. Air the flat first, because that is the part fragrance cannot do. Ten hours locked means almost no air exchange and an accumulation of the flat's own ordinary odours, met by a nose that has just come in from outside. Two openings on opposite sides for ten minutes on arrival changes the air. A diffuser adds a smell; it never removes one, and a pleasant odour laid over an unpleasant one gives you a mixture rather than a cancellation.

2. Then, for the hours you are there, use a machine rather than a reed. Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the one: a 500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft of coverage, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents in the box. Switch it on when you get in, off when you go to bed, and nothing at all is consumed between nine and seven.

3. For a bedroom, the smaller machine is the honest answer. Boond at ₹899 holds 300ml, covers up to about 150 sq ft, runs around six hours and works off USB with a night light. It is right for a room you enter at ten and it will not carry a living room — buying it for one is the commonest sizing mistake in the machine range.

4. Do not read Megh as the bigger, stronger option. Megh at ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and around 100 hours of runtime, but it covers only about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine. If you are buying for coverage, it is the wrong purchase and I would rather say so on our own page.

5. Know what you are taking on. A machine needs water, power, oil, filling and occasional cleaning of the tank, and there is no timer, plug-in, app or subscription at SOSA — so "only in the hours we are there" is achieved by your hand on the switch. If that will not happen reliably, a reed at ₹749–₹849 that asks nothing of you is the better purchase, even though it runs all day.

Reeds are alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: ventilate on arrival — that is the stale-flat fix and it is free. Then a machine, because a machine is the only thing that runs strictly in your occupied hours: Sukoon ₹1,899 for a living room, Boond ₹899 for a bedroom. Megh ₹3,499 is not a coverage upgrade. And the switch is yours to press; there is no timer.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The machine built for time-boxed rooms
Sukoon ultrasonic diffuser ₹1,899
500ml tank, 270–320 sq ft of coverage, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included. A living room used from eight until eleven is exactly the case this was designed for: it fills the room in minutes rather than hours, and it consumes nothing at all while the flat is locked. It is a device, so it wants water, power and an occasional clean — and it does nothing on an evening nobody switches it on.

Two separate problems, and only one of them is a purchase

Most people arrive at this question having conflated two things, and separating them makes the decision much easier. Problem one is the closed smell at seven o'clock. That is caused by ten hours of near-zero air exchange in a shut flat: the low-level odours the home always produces — the bin, the drain traps, a bathroom shut with the exhaust off, textiles that hold cooking aerosols — simply stay in the same air, and there is nobody inside for the build-up to happen to. Olfactory receptors adapt within minutes to anything constant, so a person at home all day stops registering it; an empty flat has nothing doing that adapting, and you walk in from the street as the most sensitive instrument the place will meet all day.

No fragrance solves problem one. Adding a pleasant odour to an unpleasant one produces a mixture, and the mixture is often worse than the original because the brain now has two things to track. What solves it is moving air: two openings on opposite sides of the flat for ten minutes, ideally with an exhaust fan running to make the flow active rather than passive. Close everything afterwards, because the four hours you are actually at home are the hours in which you want the room to hold whatever you put into it.

Problem two is waste, and that one is genuinely a purchase. A reed diffuser is continuous by design — no power, no water, no hardware, and no switch. In a flat empty ten hours a day that means a meaningful part of every bottle leaves into rooms nobody is in. There is no way round it inside the reed format: three reeds instead of six roughly halves the rate and roughly doubles the bottle's life, and that is the whole of the available control. An ultrasonic machine has a switch, and that single fact is why this family of questions almost always ends with one.

1
FACTOR ONE · TIME-BOXED ROOMS
A machine is right when a room's use has clear edges
SOSA Sukoon diffuserSukoon₹1,899The division between a reed and a machine is about control and timing rather than strength or quality. A living room used from eight to eleven, a bedroom entered at ten, a flat locked from nine to seven — these are time-boxed rooms, and a machine is the correct answer for all of them, because you can run it for the hours that matter and nothing evaporates into an empty room. The reverse case is a room in use for long, unpredictable stretches, where a reed's always-on simplicity is the advantage rather than the flaw. Ask when the room is used before asking which product is better; the room decides.
What this means for you: if you can say the hours out loud — "eight until eleven" — a machine will suit you.
2
FACTOR TWO · COVERAGE, WHICH IS NOT TANK SIZE
The biggest machine in our range is not the strongest
This is the one place our own range is easy to misread, and it costs people money. Boond ₹899 is 300ml and up to about 150 sq ft. Sukoon ₹1,899 is 500ml and 270–320 sq ft. Megh ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and around 100 hours of runtime — and covers only about 215 sq ft, which is less than the Sukoon. A larger tank buys you runtime between fills, not reach. Megh is a runtime and humidity machine and belongs in a household that wants to fill something once a week; it is not the answer for a bigger living room, and buying it as one is a ₹1,600 mistake we would rather you did not make.
What this means for you: for coverage in a living room, Sukoon is the top of the range, not the middle of it.
3
FACTOR THREE · THE OIL SYSTEMS DO NOT MIX
Reed oil and Hotel Collection oil are different physical products
SOSA Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrancesHotel Collectionfrom ₹299The Hotel Collection is water-based and ultrasonic-only. It cannot go into a reed diffuser, and reed oil — which sits on a heat-stable CCT carrier — cannot go into an ultrasonic machine. Mixing them either damages the machine or simply does nothing in the reeds. There is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser at SOSA and there will not be one made by decanting. Worth knowing before you buy: the 15ml at ₹299 is a refill for a machine you already own, not a cheap way into home fragrance, and it is the most commonly mistaken purchase on our shelf.
What this means for you: buy the machine and the oil together, or buy reeds. Do not plan to share oil between the two.

What a machine actually does differently, in plain terms

Three things, and none of them is "it is stronger". The first is the switch, which is the whole of this page: a machine runs when you tell it to and stops when you tell it to, so a household out for ten hours consumes nothing during those ten hours. The second is speed. An ultrasonic diffuser fills a room in minutes, because it is actively pushing a scented mist into the air rather than relying on capillary action and the room's own currents. That is why a machine wins whenever there is a deadline — guests in an hour, dinner at nine — and why a reed, which has been running all day, still cannot produce an event.

The third is that it is a device, with everything that implies. It has a tank to fill with water, oil to add and eventually to buy again, a plug or a USB lead, and a tank that wants rinsing so nothing builds up in it. None of that is difficult and all of it is a small ongoing demand on your attention. This is the real reason I sometimes talk people out of a machine: not because it does not work, but because the households that want fragrance strictly in the occupied hours are frequently the same households that get home at eight and have twenty minutes of energy left. If the machine will sit unfilled on the shelf, a ₹799 reed running softly on three reeds would have served you better every single evening.

One more honest note, and it belongs on this page rather than a monsoon page: an ultrasonic diffuser puts moisture into the air. In most homes that is neutral or pleasant. In a flat that already feels damp — a ground floor in heavy rain, a home where laundry dries indoors — it is an argument against the machine and in favour of a reed, and you should weigh it honestly rather than take my recommendation as universal.

The three machines and the reed, side by side

What each one covers, how long it runs and what it is actually for. Note the third row in particular: it is the row people misread most often.

The occupied-hours comparison

Switched for the evening, or continuous and simple
The SOSA principle
A bigger tank buys runtime between fills. It does not buy a bigger room.
Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft against the Sukoon's 270–320. If coverage is what you are buying, the ₹1,899 machine is the top of our range and we would rather tell you than sell you the larger one.

The evening routine that makes a machine worth its ₹1,899

Order matters, and this is the sequence I would follow in a flat that has been shut all day. Ventilate for ten minutes on arrival while you change and put your things down. Two openings, opposite sides. If there is an exhaust in the kitchen or bathroom, run it — extraction pulls fresh air in behind it and turns a passive opening into a working one. Then close everything, because a closed room is where a fragrance behaves the way you paid for it to behave.

Then switch the machine on, before you want the room to be ready rather than at the moment you want it. A Sukoon fills a room in minutes, so twenty minutes ahead of dinner is generous. Running it while you sleep is mostly running it at a nose that has already adapted — receptors stop reporting a constant, unchanging stimulus within minutes, which is why the first two minutes in a scented room are the whole of the experience and hour three is not. For most households the honest setting is: on when you arrive, off at bedtime, low rather than high.

Placement is the same discipline as with a reed. Out of the direct draught, in the room's natural airflow path, at or slightly below nose height, on a surface that will not be spoiled if water is spilled while you fill it, and away from direct sun. Keep any diffuser well away from an open flame — fragrance oil is flammable, so it does not belong beside a lit candle, a diya or an agarbatti stand. And clean the tank periodically; a machine that is filled and never rinsed is the reason people conclude an ultrasonic diffuser "smells off" after a few months.

The machine's advantage is not that it is stronger. It is that it can be switched off, and a reed diffuser cannot.

What to buy for fragrance in the occupied hours only

In order, matched to the room rather than to the budget. The last row is the limitation that decides whether this whole approach will work in your household.

The occupied-hours setup
What to buy, what to avoid, and the thing that does not exist
Buy What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. Sukoon 500ml, 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents included A living room used only in the evening. The coverage answer in the range ₹1,899
2. Boond 300ml, up to ~150 sq ft, around 6 hours, USB, night light A bedroom entered at ten. The honest entry point on the machine side ₹899
3. Hotel Collection 100ml Water-based ultrasonic oil, for a machine you already own Once the three included 15ml bottles are used. 300ml is ₹1,799 ₹999
4. Evening Calm 50ml, three reeds The softest reed at 8.9 — no power, no filling, no switch If you will not reliably switch a machine on. Runs all day, and asks nothing ₹799
Not a coverage upgrade: Megh Six-litre tank, ~100 hours runtime, ~215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon Only if long runtime between fills is what you want. Never for a bigger room ₹3,499
Not a first purchase: the ₹299 15ml A refill for an ultrasonic machine. It does nothing without hardware and cannot go in reeds Never as a way in. There is no machine below ₹899 and no reed below ₹749 ₹299
The honest gap: no timer exists No plug-in, no app, no scheduling, no subscription. "Only the hours we are there" means your hand on the switch every evening If that will not happen, buy the reed instead and accept that it runs all day
Honest notes for buyers: an ultrasonic diffuser adds moisture to the air, which is worth weighing in a flat that already feels damp. Reed oil and the water-based Hotel Collection are different physical systems and cannot be swapped in either direction; there is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser. SOSA reeds are alcohol-free on a heat-stable CCT base rather than DPG, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant, 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, climate-tested through 45°C heat and 85% RH. SOSA sells no room spray — every SOSA spray is a car perfume — and no air purifier, odour eliminator, plug-in, timer or subscription. A note from Sonal

This is the question where the machine genuinely is the better product, and I say that as someone whose range is mostly reeds. If your flat is shut from nine to seven and you want fragrance in the four hours you are actually in it, a reed diffuser is the wrong shape for your day — it has no switch, it never will, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

What I would ask you to be careful about is the sizing, because our own range invites one particular mistake. People see the Sukoon at ₹1,899 and the Megh at ₹3,499 and reasonably assume the expensive one is the bigger machine. It has a six-litre tank and around a hundred hours of runtime, and it covers about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon's 270 to 320. It is a runtime and humidity machine. If somebody buys it for a large living room they will be disappointed, and that disappointment would be our fault for not saying this plainly.

And the honest limitation of the whole approach: there is no timer, no plug-in, no app, no scheduling. Nothing switches itself on when you come through the door. I have watched a good number of machines end up unfilled at the back of a shelf while a ₹799 reed in the next room quietly did its job for eight weeks. Be truthful with yourself about which household you are. Everything is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have home fragrance only during the hours I am at home?
Yes, with an ultrasonic machine rather than a reed. Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft, holds 500ml and runs 16–18 hours on low, so an evening's use is a fraction of a tank and nothing is consumed while the flat is locked. A reed diffuser cannot do this — it is continuous by design and has no off switch. Note that the closed smell itself is an air-exchange problem: ventilate for ten minutes on arrival first, whatever you buy.
Sukoon or Boond for a flat that is empty all day?
By room, not by budget. Boond at ₹899 is 300ml, covers up to about 150 sq ft and runs around six hours on USB with a night light — right for a bedroom you enter at ten. Sukoon at ₹1,899 is 500ml with 270–320 sq ft of coverage and is the living-room machine. Putting a Boond in a living room is the commonest sizing mistake on the machine side.
Is Megh the stronger machine because it costs more?
No, and this is the one place our range is easy to misread. Megh at ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and around 100 hours of runtime but covers only about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon's 270–320 sq ft at ₹1,899. A bigger tank buys runtime between fills, not reach. Megh is a runtime and humidity machine; if you are buying for coverage it is the wrong purchase.
Can I put my reed diffuser oil into the Sukoon?
No, in either direction. The Hotel Collection is water-based and ultrasonic-only, and reed oil sits on a heat-stable CCT carrier that does not belong in a machine. They are different physical systems, and mixing them either damages the machine or does nothing in the reeds. There is no hotel-inspired reed diffuser at SOSA, and the 15ml at ₹299 is a machine refill rather than a way into the range.
Is there a timer so it comes on before we get home?
No. SOSA makes no timer, no plug-in, no app-controlled diffuser and no subscription, so restricting fragrance to your occupied hours means switching the machine on yourself when you arrive. It fills a room in minutes, so switching it on as you walk in is soon enough. If you know you will not do it reliably, a reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 that asks nothing of you is the better purchase, even though it runs all day.
