Four things routinely go into ultrasonic diffusers and only one of them belongs there - and the other three fail in three quite different ways, which is worth knowing before you decide the machine was the problem.
Quick answers — read this first
What can you put in an ultrasonic diffuser? Water and a water-based diffuser fragrance, and nothing else. The SOSA Hotel Collection (from Rs 299 for 15ml) is formulated for exactly this at three to six drops per tank. Neat essential and carrier oils, reed diffuser oil and alcohol-based perfume all fail in different ways and can damage the unit.

Why can you not use essential oils in an ultrasonic diffuser? Because they do not dissolve. The machine works by vibrating a plate under water to shear it into mist, and a viscous oil floats and settles onto that plate as a film - which progressively reduces mist output, makes the scent uneven, and shortens the unit's life. It is a mechanical problem rather than a matter of preference.

Can I put reed diffuser oil in an ultrasonic diffuser? No. Reed diffuser oil is formulated to travel up reeds by capillary action and behaves like an oil in water: it will not disperse and will coat the plate. The two are separate systems and neither works in the other's device.
The short answer
Short answer: only water and a water-based diffuser fragrance belong in an ultrasonic diffuser. Neat essential and carrier oils will not dissolve and coat the vibrating plate, reducing mist output; reed diffuser oil is a separate capillary system; alcohol perfume is not formulated for water dispersal; and water alone humidifies without scenting. Hotel Collection from Rs 299, at three to six drops.
The pick: the Day & Night reed duo (₹1,498) as the whole-home start, or single signatures from ₹749.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A home that smells like itself - at a glanceStep 1 - honest air first: ventilation and source care in every roomStep 2 - one signature family, room by room (reeds from ₹749)Step 3 - occasions layered by mist diffuser (scent from ₹299)Large open homes - the Vaayu machine, on a schedule (luxury)All alcohol-free · made in India
A home's fragrance is a system, not a product: honest air beneath, one scent family expressed room by room, occasions layered on top, and consistency held for years. That is what guests experience as "your home always smells incredible" - and what the household experiences as home.
Straight answer
What should you put in an ultrasonic diffuser?
One thing belongs; three do not. 1. Water-based diffuser fragrance - yes. The Hotel Collection (from ₹299) is formulated to disperse in the tank and mist cleanly, at three to six drops per fill, in seven registers. 2. Neat essential or carrier oils - no. They do not dissolve; they float and settle onto the vibrating plate as a film, which cuts mist output over weeks, makes the scent uneven and shortens the unit's life. This is mechanical, not a matter of taste. 3. Reed diffuser oil - no. A separate system entirely, formulated to travel up reeds by capillary action. In a tank it behaves like any other oil: it will not disperse, and it coats the plate. 4. Alcohol-based perfume - no. Not formulated for water dispersal, and it flashes off unevenly rather than misting, so the register arrives distorted and disappears quickly. 5. Water alone. Perfectly fine, and it humidifies rather than scenting - which is a legitimate use, particularly in dry weather. And the standing rule: if a room smells of something, fragrance is a finishing step rather than a repair. Musty is a moisture reading; a drain note is usually a floor trap whose seal has evaporated, fixed with a mug of water; stale is ventilation. Fix the source, air the room, then scent it. Boond ₹799, Sukoon ₹1,799. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: water-based diffuser fragrance only. Essential oils coat the plate, reed oil is a capillary system, perfume will not disperse, and water alone humidifies. From Rs 299 at 3 to 6 drops.
The whole-home start most households choose: the Day & Night duo - Morning Freshness for the day's bright spaces and Evening Calm for the bedroom - at ₹1,498, flame-free and plug-free. Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for hosting hours.

Four things people put in, and what each one does

Three failures, three different mechanisms.

Why this works
Water-based fragrance belongs; three common substitutes do not
1 Neat essential and carrier oils coat the plate and cut mist output 2 Reed diffuser oil is a separate system, made to climb reeds 3 Alcohol perfume is not formulated for water dispersal 4 Water alone humidifies and does not scent. Hotel Collection from Rs 299
Start where most households start: the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 - or a single signature reed from ₹749.
1
The oil failure is mechanical
It does not dissolve, so it lands on the plate
An ultrasonic diffuser has no heat and no fan: a ceramic disc vibrates at high frequency just under the waterline and shears water into a cold mist. Anything dissolved in that water travels with it. Anything that will not dissolve does not - and neat essential and carrier oils are exactly that: they float, they concentrate at the surface, and over days they deposit onto the disc as a film. The consequences arrive slowly enough to be misattributed: mist output drops gradually, the scent turns uneven, and eventually the unit runs while barely producing anything, at which point most people conclude the machine was poor. It was not; it was asked to atomise something that was never going to dissolve.
Tip: output drops slowly enough that people blame the machine - it was asked to atomise something that could not dissolve.
2
Reed oil belongs to a different system
Capillary action, not atomisation
Reed diffuser oil is engineered for a completely different physics: it has to travel up a porous reed against gravity by capillary action and then evaporate slowly from the exposed length, which calls for a particular viscosity and volatility profile. Put in a water tank it behaves like any other oil - it will not disperse, it coats the plate, and the register it produces is not the one it was designed to give. The reverse substitution fails too: a water-based diffuser fragrance in a reed bottle will not climb the reeds properly. This is the most common mix-up in home fragrance and it wastes both products, which is why it is worth naming rather than assuming.
3
Before adding anything, find the source
Fragrance is a finishing step and never a repair
The most useful advice on this page costs nothing. If a room smells of something, adding fragrance produces two smells rather than one, and the second is still the original. Musty is a moisture reading, produced by microbial growth in soft furnishings and cupboards - a hygrometer is a better purchase than a bottle, and drying and airing is the fix. A drain note in a bathroom or a rarely used room is usually a floor trap whose water seal has evaporated, letting the drain vent into the room, and a mug of water down it solves it. A closed, stale room is air that is not moving. And nothing scented ever goes near a kitchen, because cooking smell is aerosolised oil that settles on soft furnishings in other rooms - which is why the kitchen often smells fine and the living room does not. Fix, air, then scent.
Tip: add fragrance to a source and you get two smells, one of which is still the original.
The SOSA principle
Three substitutes, three separate failures - and only one of them is the machine's fault, which is none of them.
Water-based fragrance dissolves and travels; oils coat the plate; reed oil is a capillary system; perfume will not disperse.

A note from Sonal

Nobody actually buys a diffuser. In ten years of making fragrance I have never once met a customer who wanted a bottle with sticks in it. What they want is the moment someone walks into their home, pauses, and says "wow - it smells incredible in here." They want their children to grow up with a smell that will mean home for the rest of their lives. They want the house to feel finished.

That is why I compose scents the way I do - not as products but as the missing layer of a home: the fresh note at the door that says this house is kept, the warm one in the living room that says you are welcome, the lavender in the bedroom that says the day is over. One family of scents, held for years, becomes something no decor budget can buy: identity.

Everything here is alcohol-free, flame-free where it matters, and made in small batches in India. And a part of every order supports girl-child education - because a home's best fragrance is what it gives back.

Frequently asked questions

What can you put in an ultrasonic diffuser?
Water and a water-based diffuser fragrance, at three to six drops per tank. The SOSA Hotel Collection starts at Rs 299 for 15ml in seven registers.
Why can I not use essential oils?
Because they do not dissolve. They float, concentrate at the surface, and deposit on the vibrating plate as a film - which cuts mist output over weeks and shortens the unit's life.
Can I use reed diffuser oil?
No. Reed oil is formulated to travel up a reed by capillary action, which needs a different viscosity and volatility. In a tank it will not disperse and will coat the plate.
Can I use perfume?
No. Alcohol-based perfume is not formulated for water dispersal, so it flashes off unevenly rather than misting and the register arrives distorted.
What if the room already smells of something?
Fix that first. Musty is a moisture reading, a drain note is usually a dried-out floor trap that needs a mug of water, and stale is ventilation. Fragrance over a source gives two smells. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the home-care and buying advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory signals reach the brain's emotion and memory centres (amygdala, hippocampus) ahead of conscious processing, which is why scents trigger emotional responses and autobiographical memories with unusual speed and durability; a home's ambient scent influences mood, comfort and social judgments at moderate, replicated effect sizes, with gentle intensities outperforming strong ones and no fragrance effect surviving unmanaged odour sources. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural rattan reeds (no flame, electricity or water), from ₹749, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks per fill; refills from ₹2,399. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799), Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a separate water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, ~1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India.
