Metal is hard and reflective — a brass-heavy room holds less scent than it looks like it should Sukoon covers 270–320 sq ft · ships with 3 × 15ml scents · ₹1,899 Composed in India by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer

Founder Diaries · Fragrance by Interior Style
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Brass is the most misleading material in an interior. It reads warm — visually it is the warmest thing most rooms contain, warmer than timber, warmer than terracotta — and that warmth quietly persuades people that a brass-heavy room is a soft, enveloping, scent-holding sort of space. It is not. Metal is as hard and non-porous as glass, and a room with a lot of it in it loses fragrance at very nearly the speed a marble one does, however golden the light looks bouncing off it.
Quick answers — read this first
The match? The W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar — citrus, pepper and amber. Warm enough for the metal, sharp enough not to go sticky. 15ml ₹299.

Softer, more traditional brass? The The St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour.

The thing nobody tells you: never stand an ultrasonic diffuser beside unlacquered brass. Tarnish is a reaction with moisture and air, and you have just built a humid micro-climate next to it.
The short answer
Short answer: The W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar — citrus, pepper and amber. The amber gives the warmth that brass reads as, the pepper gives it the edge that metal has, and the citrus keeps the whole thing from turning sweet next to something so bright.
The pick: Lobby Bar (W Hotels-inspired) for brass with black, glass, marble and lacquer; Old-World Glamour (St. Regis-inspired) for antique brass with velvet and traditional furniture; Forest Suite (1 Hotels-inspired) for brushed brass with timber. All ₹299 in 15ml.
The material rule: A brass-and-glass room is a hard room despite looking warm. Run 4–5 drops on a Sukoon (₹1,899) and expect it to fade quickly — unless there is velvet in the room too, in which case drop to three.
Straight answer
What is the best home fragrance for a room with brass and gold accents?
1. The match: W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar. Citrus, pepper and amber. Amber for the warmth the metal reads as, pepper for its hardness, citrus for its brightness — the only scent in the range that answers all three things brass is doing at once. 15ml ₹299.

2. Treat the room as hard, not warm. This is the counter-intuitive part. Brass, gold leaf, glass, marble and lacquer absorb essentially nothing. A brass-heavy room needs four to five drops where a velvet room needs two, and it will not hold the scent overnight.

3. Unless there is velvet in it too. Most brass rooms are not pure metal — brass usually arrives with upholstery. Do the audit honestly. Brass with a velvet sofa and heavy curtains is a soft room with metal in it, and three drops is plenty.

4. Do not stand the machine next to unlacquered brass. Tarnish is a reaction between copper alloy, moisture and air. An ultrasonic diffuser creates a small humid zone around itself, and living brass a foot away will darken visibly faster on that side.

5. And keep the mist off everything else too. Settling water spots lacquered brass, flattens and marks velvet pile, spots raw silk and darkens aniline leather. Machine on a tray, a clear metre in every direction, plume into open air.

Made in India, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer — and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: buy the W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar for a brass-and-gold room because spiced amber with a citrus lift is what warm metal actually wants, dose it as a hard room at four to five drops unless there is serious upholstery present, and never stand the machine beside unlacquered brass.

Warm like the metal, sharp like the metal
W Hotels-inspired · Lobby Bar From ₹299
Citrus, pepper and amber — the warmth brass reads as, with an edge and a lift so it never turns sticky beside something so bright. A water-based diffuser fragrance made to mist cleanly. 15ml ₹299 to test under your own lighting, 100ml ₹999, 300ml ₹1,799 at about ₹6 a millilitre.

Warm to look at, cold to scent

There is a persistent confusion between visual temperature and physical behaviour, and brass is where it does the most damage. Gold and brass sit at the warm end of every colour wheel; they throw warm reflected light around a room; they make white walls look creamy and marble look softer. Everything about them says enveloping. But scent does not care what colour a surface is — it cares whether the surface is porous. Brass, gold leaf, bronze and gilt are metal, which is as non-absorbent as glass. Fragrance released into a room full of metal, mirror, marble and lacquer stays airborne, disperses quickly, bounces off every plane rather than settling into any of them, and is gone within an hour of the machine stopping. A brass-heavy room is a hard room wearing warm clothes.

That gives you two instructions rather than one. The dose goes up, towards the four or five drops a stone or glass room needs, and not down to the two a velvet room takes — this is the one interior in this sub-cluster that runs against the sub-cluster. And the scent choice needs to do something more interesting than simply be warm. The obvious move is a plain sweet amber, and it is very slightly wrong: next to polished metal, sweetness reads as sticky, because the room itself has an edge and a glint that the scent is not acknowledging. Lobby Bar solves it by keeping the amber and adding pepper and citrus — warmth with a hard edge and a bright top, which is precisely what brass is doing to the light.

The three decisions in a brass-and-gold room

1
DECISION ONE · LACQUERED OR LIVING
What your brass is going to do over time
SOSA Hotel CollectionHotel CollectionFrom ₹299Lacquered brass has a clear coat over it: it stays bright, will not tarnish, and shows water spots if mist settles on it. Unlacquered or living brass is bare alloy and is meant to patinate — and it tarnishes through reaction with moisture and air, so a humid micro-climate a foot away will visibly speed that up on one side. Either way the machine belongs elsewhere in the room, on its own tray, with a clear metre around it. If you are unsure which you have, a magnet is no help but a soft cloth is: living brass leaves a faint dark mark on it.
The test: whichever kind you have, the diffuser does not stand next to it.
2
DECISION TWO · WHAT THE BRASS IS WITH
Metal alone, or metal on velvet
Brass almost never appears by itself, and the company it keeps decides the dose entirely. Brass with marble, glass, black lacquer and a bare floor is a genuinely hard room: four to five drops on a Sukoon, run in short bursts, and no expectation of it lasting to morning. Brass with a velvet sofa, a wool rug and lined curtains is a soft room with metal accents: three drops, and it will still be there tomorrow. The metal is what you notice; the textiles are what decide the physics.
Rule of thumb: count the soft things, not the shiny ones. The shiny ones do nothing at all.
3
DECISION THREE · WHEN THE LIGHT IS ON
Brass is an evening material
Brass looks flat and slightly yellow in overhead daylight and comes alive under lamps, which is why almost every room built around it is really an evening room. That points at scheduled running rather than all-day diffusion: thirty to forty minutes before the room fills, on a timer, with W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar if the room is for entertaining or The St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour if it is a softer, more traditional sitting room. Constant low-level diffusion in a hard room is the worst of both — you never notice it and you get through the bottle.

The brass-and-gold palette

Which of the seven belong beside warm metal, judged on whether they match what brass does to light rather than simply being warm. A 15ml at ₹299 tested under your own lamps settles it — brass changes character completely between daylight and lamplight.

The scent, the machine, and the honest way to choose
The SOSA principle
Brass is a hard room wearing warm clothes.
Metal reflects light and absorbs nothing. Judge a gold-heavy room by what its textiles are doing, not by how enveloping the light looks.

Dose, placement, and a caution about tarnish

Four to five drops in a Sukoon for a genuinely hard brass room — metal, glass, marble, lacquer, bare floor. That is the marble-room dose, not the velvet-room dose, and it is the exception in this sub-cluster. Slide down to three the moment upholstery enters the picture, and to two if there is a velvet sofa and lined curtains, because at that point the textiles are running the room whatever the metal looks like. Expect a hard brass room to lose the scent within an hour or two of the machine stopping — that is physics, not a fault.

Placement is where this room differs from every other one in the cluster, and it is not about dispersal. Put the machine at least a metre, ideally two, from any bare brass — handles, tables, lamp bases, taps, picture frames. Stand it on a tray or coaster about a metre up, plume pointing into open air, out of the direct draught of an air conditioner. Do not aim it at a mirror or a run of glazing either, where condensing mist is instantly visible on something you polish.

The caution, and this is the specific one for brass: moisture accelerates tarnish on unlacquered brass, because tarnishing is a reaction between the copper alloy, water vapour and air. An ultrasonic diffuser is a small humidifier, so a living-brass surface a foot away will darken faster on that side than the other. Lacquered brass will not tarnish but will show water spots. The same rule applies to the other delicate materials these rooms contain — do not aim mist at velvet, silk or leather, where settling water flattens pile, spots silk and darkens aniline hide. Use filtered water in hard-water cities, because mineral dust is extremely visible on polished metal.

Gold changes the light in a room and nothing at all about the air in it.

What to buy

The fragrance is the decision; the machine is sizing. Brass rooms are usually living rooms, lobbies or dining rooms, and because they hold scent poorly they reward timers rather than bigger tanks.

Honest notes before you buy: a Sukoon ships with three 15ml fragrances of your choice, so ₹1,899 is a complete setup. The Megh at ₹3,499 is a 6-litre runtime and humidity machine for a single dry room and covers up to 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon — so it is never a coverage upgrade, and its humidity output is the last thing you want near unlacquered brass; more area means more Sukoons. The Vaayu (₹11,999) and Aangan (₹25,999) are waterless machines that run neat oil and cannot use the water-based Hotel Collection; they are commercial systems for very large connected volumes. These fragrances add slight humidity, welcome in an air-conditioned flat and less so in a coastal monsoon. The machines are imported from China; the fragrances are composed and made in India. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, stand the unit on a tray, and keep fragrance away from children and pets. A note from Sonal

Brass has been the defining material of Indian interiors for the last decade, and I have watched it change the way people describe their homes. They say warm. They say golden. They say cosy. Then they buy a warm, golden, cosy fragrance, use very little of it because the room already feels full, and cannot understand why it disappears by nine in the evening.

The room is lying to them, pleasantly. Metal reflects, it does not absorb, and a flat with a lot of brass, glass and stone in it behaves almost exactly like the marble apartments I usually have to talk people into dosing up. It is the one interior in this whole family of rich materials where the instruction reverses.

So: something warm with an edge, four or five drops rather than two, and the machine kept well away from anything unlacquered. Buy the ₹299 tester and judge it after dark, because brass in daylight and brass under a lamp are two different materials. A portion of what you spend funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best home fragrance for brass and gold accents?
The W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar — citrus, pepper and amber. The amber matches the visual warmth of the metal, the pepper matches its hardness and the citrus matches its brightness, which is more than a plain sweet amber does. For antique brass with velvet and traditional furniture, the St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour is the softer answer. Both ₹299 in 15ml.
Does a brass room need more or less fragrance?
More than its warmth suggests. Brass, gold leaf, glass, marble and lacquer are non-porous and absorb essentially nothing, so fragrance stays airborne and disperses quickly. A genuinely hard brass room wants four to five drops, close to the marble-room dose. If the same room also has a velvet sofa and heavy curtains, drop to three — the textiles decide the physics, not the metal.
Can a diffuser tarnish brass?
It can accelerate tarnish on unlacquered or living brass. Tarnishing is a reaction between copper alloy, moisture and air, and an ultrasonic diffuser creates a small humid zone around itself, so bare brass a foot away will darken faster on that side. Lacquered brass will not tarnish but will show water spots. Keep the machine a metre or two away, on its own tray.
Why does a warm amber smell sticky in my gold living room?
Because the room has an edge that the scent is not acknowledging. Polished metal glints, reflects and reads as sharp as well as warm; a plain sweet amber answers only half of that and can tip into sugary. Adding pepper and citrus — which is what Lobby Bar does — gives the fragrance the same combination of warmth and hardness the metal has.
Should I run the diffuser all day in a brass room?
No. Hard rooms lose scent quickly whatever you do, so constant low-level diffusion mostly empties the bottle without ever being noticed. Use the timer on a Sukoon for a thirty to forty minute run before the room is used. It suits brass in another way too — these are evening rooms, because brass looks flat in overhead daylight and comes alive under lamps.
