The three complaints hiding inside the word "heavy"

This is the most useful thing I can do on this page, so I want to do it before recommending anything. "Heavy" is not one complaint. It is three, and they have three different fixes. When somebody returns a diffuser or writes to say a fragrance was too much, I ask two questions — whether they noticed it more at the start or after a few days, and whether the smell reminded them of anything edible. The answers almost always sort them into one of the three boxes below. Two of those boxes have nothing to do with strength at all, which is why buying a "milder" version of the same kind of smell so often fails to solve the problem.

You are reading sugar as weight

Gourmand and heavily floral fragrances — vanilla, caramel, tuberose, a big rose — are built on large, sticky molecules that the nose registers as thickness rather than as loudness. You are not being overwhelmed; you are being coated. The tell is that the discomfort is immediate and it is worse in a warm room, because heat pushes sweetness forward. The fix is not less of the same fragrance. It is a dry fragrance. Mountain Breeze is 9.4 on our scale, deeper on paper than anything except Fresh Brew, and it is routinely the scent that people who dislike home fragrance get on with, because Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar have no sugar in them anywhere.

COMPLAINT TWO · TOO PERSISTENT

It is not loud, it just never stops

A fragrance can be perfectly quiet and still become intolerable if you never get a break from it — if it is the same at four in the afternoon as it was at eight in the morning, and the same again the next day. This is why plug-ins and heavily based synthetics wear people down: they are engineered for constancy. A fragrance built to recede is a different experience even at the same measured strength. COMPLAINT THREE · TOO PRESENT

The only one that is genuinely about dose

A 130ml bottle with all six reeds in a 110 sq ft bedroom is too much fragrance, and it would be too much whatever the scent was. This is the only version of "heavy" that a strength number addresses, and it is also the one that costs nothing to fix, because it is arithmetic rather than taste. Pull three reeds out. Move the bottle off the bedside and onto a shelf across the room. Buy the 50ml, which is built for anything up to about 150 sq ft. Morning Freshness at 9.0 is calibrated for exactly this reader — enough to change the room, not enough to follow you out of it.

You are complaint three if: you like the smell perfectly well in a shop and dislike it in your own bedroom.

The uncomfortable thing about our own strength scale

Here is the observation that a brand is not supposed to make about its own numbers. The SOSA strength scale runs from 8.9 to 9.5, which means the entire range — the softest scent we make and the deepest — is separated by six-tenths of a point. That is not a marketing spread. It is a genuinely narrow band, and it is narrow on purpose: everything in the reed line was composed for Indian domestic rooms, which are warmer than European ones and where an over-dosed fragrance becomes unpleasant faster. But narrow has a consequence I would rather state than hide. For a reader who dislikes heavy scents, choosing between SOSA scents is a small lever.

The two large levers are free and you already own them. Reed count and room size will change what you experience far more than moving from one bottle to another. Taking three reeds out of a six-reed bottle roughly halves the wicking surface — that is a change you can smell from the doorway. I say this knowing it costs us the easy sale. The commercially convenient version of this page would rank five scents by strength, put the softest at the top and let you buy your way out of the problem. The accurate version is that if a SOSA diffuser has ever felt heavy to you, the most likely explanation is six reeds in a room that wanted three, and the second most likely is a gourmand you were never going to enjoy at any dose. The five dials, in order of how much they actually move

One. Reed count, and it is not close. Every bottle comes with six fibre reeds — fibre rather than rattan, because rattan clogs in Indian humidity and gives you the fade-then-nothing pattern people blame on the oil. Six reeds is a living room. Four is a bedroom. Three is a bedside or a small bathroom, and at that count a 50ml will run close to three months rather than 6–8 weeks. If you take one instruction from this page, take this one: start at three, live with it for a week, add a fourth only if you want more. Two. Placement, which is the free dial nobody uses. A reed diffuser has no fan; it depends entirely on the room's own air movement, so where you put it changes its apparent strength more than any half-point of scale. Out of the traffic path and away from where you actually sit is the rule — a shelf across the room rather than the bedside table, a console rather than the sofa arm. Never directly under a running split AC, which strips the top notes in days and leaves you with the base, and never on a sunlit windowsill. Three. Flip frequency. The cadence is every three to five days for Morning Freshness and every five to seven for Garden Bloom, and each flip is a deliberate lift. If a fragrance feels like too much, the simplest correction available is to stop flipping and let it settle. Nothing breaks. It simply runs quieter.

Four. Size, which is the one people get wrong at the point of purchase. The 50ml suits rooms up to about 150 sq ft — bathroom, bedroom, home office. The 130ml is for above that, living rooms and open-plan ends of a flat. Putting the 130ml in the room the 50ml was built for is the single commonest cause of a fragrance feeling oppressive, and it is a mistake made at checkout rather than in the room. Five, and last, scent choice. Once the four dials above are set, the difference between 8.9 and 9.4 is a matter of character rather than volume — dry versus soft, green versus herbal — and you should choose the smell you like rather than the number that looks lowest. If the four free dials are still not enough, the number will not save you.

The low-strength edit, in buying order — and the gap

The range as it applies to somebody who finds most home fragrance too much, in the order I would actually buy it. The last row is the thing this range does not contain, and on this page in particular it deserves saying at full length rather than in a footnote: nothing in the SOSA reed line sits below 8.9 on our own scale. There is no ultra-low, barely-there reed diffuser here. If the softest thing we make is still more than you want, the honest instruction is to use fewer reeds — and if a member of your household is genuinely fragrance-sensitive, to consider that a reed diffuser may be the wrong format altogether, because unlike an ultrasonic machine it cannot be switched off.
