Fragrance gifts to villa owners fail more often than gifts to anybody else, and the reason is worth setting out properly because it is not a matter of the product being cheap or the recipient being hard to please. It is arithmetic and a little physics. Start with the arithmetic. Home fragrance products are described by the floor area they cover, which quietly assumes that a floor area is one connected space. In a flat it usually is, near enough. In a villa it almost never is. That rising column moves continuously through the stairwell, and anything volatile released on the ground floor joins it. The practical consequence is that a ground-floor diffuser is partly a first-floor diffuser, and the harder it works the more of its output goes up rather than out. Somebody who has increased the dose twice and still finds the drawing room thin has usually been scenting a landing without knowing it. Three approaches follow, and they can be combined. The second is distribution: several modest sources placed one per volume, which is often better than one large source and is much better suited to a house where different rooms are used at different times. Reeds are ideal for the rooms nobody wants to think about, since they need no power, no filling and no attention, and run three to four months. The third costs nothing at all and is usually the biggest single improvement available: open the doors. A villa with its internal doors open is three or four volumes instead of nine, and every product in the house immediately performs better. Anybody being advised to buy a larger machine should try this for a week first.
