Founder Diaries · Fragrance Projection
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
A few feet is not a coincidence - it is roughly the whole working radius of a passive reed. Projection isn't something a reed can be short on; it's something a reed doesn't have, because passive diffusion scents only the air right around the bottle.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does it die within a few feet? Because a reed works by evaporation, and evaporation with no push behind it only reaches the nearby air. Concentration is high at the bottle and thins to nothing within a couple of feet - that few-foot bubble is essentially the reed's entire range. Real projection comes from the active SOSA Safar (₹3,999).

Am I doing something wrong with placement? Placement tweaks the bubble slightly but can't extend it much. A warm, airy spot helps a little; it does not give a passive reed a longer throw. The limit is the method, not the shelf.

What has real projection for a bedroom? Active diffusion. The cordless, waterless Safar pushes scent well beyond a few feet, filling a personal room. Save the Vaayu (₹11,999) for large open spaces.
The short answer
Short answer: A reed dies within a few feet because passive evaporation only scents the nearby air - that few-foot radius is its whole range; for genuine projection switch to active diffusion, the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) for a personal room and the Vaayu (₹11,999) only for large spaces.
How to choose: passive ambience in one room → a reed (from ₹749); strong, perfume-like projection in a personal/small room, on demand → the cordless SOSA Safar (₹3,999); room-filling projection across a genuinely large space → the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³). More reeds can't buy projection - the method has to change.
Shop: the Safar for a personal room, the Vaayu for a large space, and reed diffusers for passive ambience.
SOSA Safar - active waterless projection for a personal-sized room Projection is a method, not a scent A reed scents the air around it; for perfume-like throw you need active diffusion - Safar for a personal room, Vaayu for a large space Meet the Safar · ₹3,999
Straight answer
My reed's scent vanishes within a few feet - why is the projection so short, and what has more?
1. Reframe 'almost no projection' as 'the normal reed radius'. A few feet isn't a shortfall against some target - it is, near enough, the entire range of a passive reed. You're not seeing a broken reed; you're seeing the edge of the format.

2. Trace the concentration curve. Fragrance is densest at the sticks and dilutes rapidly with distance. Because nothing is pushing it, by two or three feet the molecules are too sparse for your nose to catch. That curve is fixed by physics, not by brand.

3. Define projection properly. Projection - throw, sillage - means scent actively carried outward and held across a space. A reed has no mechanism to carry anything; it can only let oil evaporate where it sits.

4. Get the mechanism that projects. The SOSA Safar (₹3,999) is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser that atomises oil and pushes a dry mist outward - projection that clears the few-foot bubble and reaches across a room.

5. Match it to the space. A bedroom or study is Safar-sized. A genuinely large open floor is where the Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) belongs - not a personal room.

The pick: SOSA Safar (₹3,999) - real projection past a few feet, sized for a personal room. Vaayu for large spaces.

Why a few feet is the reed's whole working range

1
THE RADIUS
A few feet is the format, not a fault
Reed diffuser - passive Reed diffuser · passiveFrom ₹749 A passive reed produces a small scent bubble whose radius is roughly a few feet - and that is the design, not a defect. Concentration peaks at the bottle and falls off steeply because evaporation, unaided, doesn't travel. Whether the reed is cheap or premium, the bubble is about the same size; a richer oil just makes the inside of the bubble smell better. So 'almost no projection beyond a few feet' is really a precise description of what every reed does.
Tip: If the range feels fixed no matter what you try, that's because it is.
2
REAL THROW
Active diffusion clears the bubble
SOSA Safar - waterless, cordless SOSA Safar · waterless, cordless₹3,999 The Safar exists to beat that radius. As a waterless cold-air diffuser it atomises concentrated oil into a fine dry cloud and pushes it into the room, so the scent projects well past the few-foot mark and fills a personal space. This is throw with an engine behind it - the home equivalent of a perfume with real sillage rather than a skin scent. And being cordless and on-demand, it gives you that projection when you want it, not a faint drift all day.
Tip: Turn it on and the scent reaches the doorway, not just the desk.

RIGHT-SIZE
Match the throw to the room
SOSA Vaayu - up to 1000m3 SOSA Vaayu · up to 1000m³₹11,999 Short reed projection can push people toward the largest machine on the shelf. But the Vaayu is a nebuliser for up to 1000m³ - large open floors, halls, shops - and in a bedroom that throw would be far more than the volume needs. The Safar's projection is sized for a personal room and priced at a quarter of the Vaayu. Buy the throw your space calls for, not the biggest one available.
Tip: Bedroom projection is a Safar job; hall projection is a Vaayu job.
SOSA Safar - cordless waterless diffuser with perfume-like projection
Perfume-like throw, personal scale SOSA Safar ₹3,999 The SOSA Safar is a cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffuser - active diffusion that pushes fragrance across a room instead of waiting for it to drift. Built for the car and travel, it is exactly the right scale for a personal space: a bedroom, a study, a cabin. Switch it on when you want the room to smell strong, off when you don't. Projection by method - what reaches how far

Reach is set by the method. Here is roughly what each one can and can't do.

By method
How far each method actually projects
Method Typical reach Best for
Passive reed (from ₹749) Around a few feet - a small bubble Ambience beside the bottle
Water-based ultrasonic (Sukoon ₹1,799) A gentle room signature Soft even scent, personal room
Active waterless (Safar ₹3,999) Across a personal room Perfume-like projection, on demand
Active nebuliser (Vaayu ₹11,999) Up to 1000m³ Large open / commercial spaces
The projection ladder
Match the method to the throw you want - and the space you have
The SOSA principle
'Almost no projection beyond a few feet' is not a problem to troubleshoot - it is a precise measurement of what a passive reed does. Throw is a mechanism, and a reed doesn't have one.
A few feet is the reed's whole world; a Safar's world is the room.
SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air machine for large spaces
When the space is genuinely large SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 For a large living-dining, an open floor, a shop or a villa, the SOSA Vaayu is the waterless cold-air nebuliser built for it - up to 1000m³, with app and timer control. It is deliberately more machine than a single bedroom needs; below roughly a large hall, the Safar is the right-sized, better-value choice. See the Vaayu →
You measured your reed honestly and got the number the physics predicts. The answer isn't a better reed - it's a method with a push.

Which SOSA diffuser matches the projection you want?

Start from the honest question: do you want ambience, or projection? For ambience, a reed is perfect. For projection, the method has to be active - and which active diffuser is set by the size of your space. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Which SOSA diffuser matches the projection you want?
Match the method of diffusion to the throw you want - and the size of the space
What you actually want The method The SOSA product Best for
Soft, always-on background scent Passive - reeds wick & evaporate near the bottle Reed diffuser (from ₹749) Gentle ambience in one room; no power, no controls
Strong, perfume-like projection you can smell across the room, on demand Active - cordless, rechargeable waterless cold-air diffusion SOSA Safar (₹3,999) A personal / small space - bedroom, study, cabin, car; controllable
Room-filling projection across a genuinely large or open space Active - waterless cold-air nebuliser, app + timer SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) Large living-dining, open floors, shops, offices, villas
An even, hotel-style scent without a big machine Active - ultrasonic cool-mist (water-based) Sukoon (₹1,799) / Boond (₹799) A steady room signature; gentler throw than the Safar
How to read this box: the honest thing first - you may not need a stronger fragrance; you may need a stronger method of diffusion. A reed is passive, so it can only ever scent the air right around it - adding sticks makes the oil finish faster, not the room smell stronger. Projection comes from active diffusion, and the right one is set by your space: the cordless, rechargeable Safar (₹3,999) for a personal/small room you can switch on and off, the Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) only when the space is genuinely large. A Vaayu in a 120 sq ft bedroom is overkill; a reed in a big open hall is underkill. The Safar and Vaayu are waterless; the Sukoon/Boond are water-based ultrasonic. Everything is made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA reed diffuser - passive ambience for one room
If you actually want quiet ambience Reed Diffuser From ₹749 A reed diffuser is passive: the reeds wick oil and it evaporates into the air right around the bottle. That is perfect for a soft, always-on background in one room - but it is physically not built to project across a space, no matter how many reeds you add. If ambience is the goal, it is the elegant, no-power answer; if projection is the goal, you have outgrown the format. Shop reeds →

Frequently asked questions

Can better placement extend the projection?
A warm, airy, mid-room spot can help the bubble a little, but it can't meaningfully extend a passive reed's few-foot range. Placement optimises within the method; it can't beat it. For reach past a few feet you need the active Safar.
Would doubling up two reeds double the projection?
No. Two reeds give you two overlapping few-foot bubbles and burn oil twice as fast - not one longer throw. Reach doesn't add up that way. One Safar does what two reeds can't: actually project.
Is the Vaayu the only thing with serious projection?
No. The Vaayu has the most projection because it's built for up to 1000m³, but that's for large spaces. In a bedroom the Safar already projects across the room - and is the right-sized, better-value choice.
Does the Safar's mist leave the room damp?
No - it is waterless. The Safar diffuses oil as a dry cold-air micro-mist, so there's no moisture, unlike a water-based ultrasonic. That's also part of why its throw is stronger than a Sukoon.
So is the reed just a bad product?
Not at all - it's an excellent passive ambience piece for a small, enclosed space. It's only 'bad' if you ask it to project, which was never its job. Keep it for a bathroom or nook and let the Safar handle throw.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The principle here is about the physics of diffusion: passive reeds evaporate fragrance into the air immediately around them, while active diffusers project it across a space. "Projection", "throw" and "sillage" describe how far a scent travels; how far any diffuser reaches depends on the room size, layout, ventilation and airflow, so treat coverage figures as guidance, not guarantees. No fragrance or diffuser is claimed to be therapeutic or to purify air.
