Three rules cover the Indian monsoon and one of them is not obvious. Wet air makes fragrance persist rather than fade, damp fabric holds oil at full strength, and a genuinely cool wet day is the one daytime window a deep attar gets all year.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I wear in the rains?Adaa at one dab on warm wet days - green, dry and unbothered by humidity.
What is the surprise? On a genuinely cool wet day, Nawaab at one dab is superb at midday. Temperature decides, not rain.
What is the warning? Never apply where a wet collar or damp sleeve will sit - fabric holds oil at full strength for hours.
The short answer
Two variables decide almost everything. How dry the composition is, and how much you apply. Dry clears every Indian condition; dose moves opposite to temperature.
The non-negotiable. An oil base rather than alcohol. It behaves on sweating skin, damp skin and cracked winter skin alike. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here.Adaa 3ml at ₹379 is the safest first purchase in almost any Indian climate - and cheap enough that being wrong costs very little.
Illustrative only. Almost every 'which should I buy' question in Indian fragrance resolves to the same two variables: how dry the composition is, and how much of it you apply.
So which attar should you wear during the Indian monsoon?
Adaa on warm wet days, at one dab on dry skin. Three rules cover the season. First, humid air slows evaporation so everything persists and carries - wear about half your dry-weather dose. Second, never apply where damp fabric will touch, because cloth holds oil at full strength for hours where skin does not. Third, the exception: on a genuinely cool wet day, Nawaab at one dab is the best daytime oud weather of the year. Temperature decides, not rain.
Short version: half the dose, dry skin only, and check the thermometer rather than the sky.
Want the short path?Adaa at one dab - and try Nawaab on the first cool wet afternoon.
Short article, three rules. They cover almost everything the season does to a fragrance.
How to answer any of these questions
Almost every which attar should I buy question resolves to two variables: how dry the composition is, and how much you apply. Dry compositions clear all three Indian conditions; sweet ones are seasonal. Dose moves opposite to temperature.
1
Criterion one
Rule one: humidity makes it persist, so halve the dose
Wet air slows evaporation and holds fragrance near you, so the same dose projects further and lasts longer than it would in dry weather. The failure in the monsoon is a scent that will not leave, not one that fades - which means the fix is almost always less.
2
Criterion two
Rule two: never apply where damp fabric sits
The one nobody knows. Skin metabolises and disperses a fragrance over hours; fabric does neither - it absorbs the oil and releases it at close to full strength for as long as you are wearing the garment. Apply to genuinely dry skin at the base of the throat, and pat the spot first if you have come in from the rain.
The pleasant exception. On a genuinely cool monsoon day, the amplification that makes a deep attar difficult simply is not happening, and the mineral, damp quality of real oud and sandalwood is flattered by wet air. One dab of Nawaab on a grey cool afternoon is one of the better things in the Indian fragrance year.

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better
The damp-fabric rule is the most useful thing I know about monsoon fragrance and it costs nothing. I would rather you knew it than bought anything.
The honest position
Three rules, and two of them are free.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: a composition with no sugar for the warm wet days and a genuinely deep one for the cool ones, both alcohol-free. Where another house might suit you better: a traditional mitti attar in the monsoon is one of the great pleasures of Indian perfumery and we do not make one.
Three things these buying questions usually get wrong
✕
"There is a right bottle for my situation." More often there is a right dose. Most situational problems are solved by applying less or more of what you already own.
✕
"Gender narrows the choice." It narrows it wrongly. Climate and dose decide how a fragrance behaves; the label on the box decides nothing at all.
✕
"Buying blind online is risky." Less so with an attar, because a 3ml costs ₹379 - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee, so test rather than trust them.
Halve the dose, keep it off damp fabric, and watch for the first cool afternoon. Adaa and Nawaab cover the whole season between them.
The SOSA attar range
All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Monsoon: Adaa on warm wet days, Nawaab on cool ones, Ameeri for indoor functions, Mastani for evenings.
Most of the questions I am asked have the same shape: here is my climate and my day, what should I buy? After a decade of answering them, I have come to think almost all of them resolve to two variables - how dry the composition is, and how much you apply.
Dry compositions clear all three of India's conditions: they do not swell in heat, hang in humidity, or fall apart in cold. Sweet ones are seasonal by nature - which is fine as long as you buy them knowing it. And dose moves opposite to temperature: less when it is hot, more when it is cold. That is genuinely most of it.
Everything I make is alcohol-free and DPG-free on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, and every material is named on the listing so you can place it on that map yourself. If another house does the same and you prefer their composition, buy theirs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decide how much to apply?
Dose moves opposite to temperature: one dab when it is hot, one or two in humidity, two or three when it is genuinely cold. Apply at the base of the throat on dry - or in winter, moisturised - skin.
Does my city matter more than the season?
Often, yes. The difference between Delhi and Chennai on the same afternoon is larger than the difference between May and December in Bangalore. Choose for your climate, then adjust by month.
Which SOSA attar should I buy first?
Adaa in 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the safest first purchase in almost any Indian climate and cheap enough that being wrong costs very little.
Which size should I buy?
3ml (₹379-₹399) to discover, 6ml (₹669-₹699) for daily wear, 12ml (₹1,149-₹1,199) for best value at roughly half the per-ml cost of the 3ml.
Do SOSA attars contain alcohol?
No. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free, carried on jojoba and Mysore sandalwood oil and formulated to IFRA levels - which is why it behaves on sweating, damp and cracked skin alike.
