Two forces decide your scent throw, and they pull in opposite directions if you are not careful: airflow spreads the fragrance, and heat destroys it. The trick is to find the spot in your cabin that has the first without the second.
Air carries scent the way a breeze carries it across a room. A fragrance sitting in still, dead air - tucked in a closed cubby, say - barely travels. Place it where the cabin's natural air movement passes over it: near the path your vents push air along, or somewhere it catches the gentle motion of driving. Why shade matters more than you think
A parked car's dashboard in Indian summer sun routinely reaches 65-70°C. At that temperature, fragrance oil evaporates far too fast - you lose the scent in days instead of weeks, and the throw can turn sharp before it goes. Shade is not optional; it is the single biggest lever you have over longevity. A spot shaded for most of the day will outlast a sunny one many times over.
So the ideal placement is a contradiction resolved: airflow yes, sun no. The mirror stem, lower headrest posts, and the shaded side of the centre console all qualify. The flat dashboard - baking under the windscreen - almost never does.

The spray
Placement is where you aim, not where you store
A spray is strong and on-demand, so "placement" means where you direct the spritz. Aim low and towards the upholstery or footwell - not at faces, not at the windscreen. One spritz onto the seats or carpet lets the scent rise and circulate. Keep the bottle in a shaded door pocket between uses. Because you control each application, a spray is the most forgiving format in a hot cabin.
Tip: spray before you set off, not while driving - it gives the scent a moment to bloom and settle before you are in the airflow.

The hanging diffuser
Placement is permanent, so choose carefully
A hanging diffuser scents the cabin continuously, so where you hang it is where it lives for weeks. Mirror stem or headrest post, shaded, off to one side so it is not in anyone's face.
