Where you put it matters as much as what you put in it — a diffuser across the room reads as calm; one at the pillow reads as too much

Most people who tell me their bedroom scent is "too strong" have not bought the wrong product — they have put it in the wrong place. Scent the bedroom for the arrival into rest, and placement is half of that: a source across the room reads as calm; one at the pillow reads as too much. Move it a metre or two and the same diffuser changes character entirely.
Quick answers
Where? Across the room from the bed — a dresser, chest of drawers or shelf, about waist height. Not the bedside table.

Airflow? Near gentle movement (open door or window), but out of the direct blast of an AC or fan.

Why not the pillow? Scent concentrated where you breathe most reads as strong even on low.
The short answer
Short answer: put the diffuser across the room from the bed, on a dresser or shelf at roughly waist height, near a little airflow but off the AC's direct path. From there the scent reaches you low and even — which is exactly what a bedroom wants.
The pick: a Sukoon on a far shelf run low before bed, or an Evening Calm reed on the dresser for passive, always-low scent.

Three placement rules for a restful room

1
Distance
Across the room, never at the pillow

The bedside table feels like the obvious spot, and it is the one to avoid. Right by your pillow the scent is concentrated at the exact place you breathe most, so it reads as too strong even on a low setting — and an ultrasonic also puts a fine mist close to your face. Give it distance. A dresser, chest of drawers or shelf a metre or two from the bed lets the scent spread and soften before it reaches you, so it welcomes you into the room rather than crowding your face all night.

Tip: if a scent feels too strong, move the source further from the bed before you turn it down — distance usually fixes it.
2
Airflow
Near gentle movement, off the AC blast

Scent needs a little air to travel, but not a gale. Place the diffuser where there is gentle movement — near an open door or window, or in the soft path of a ceiling fan — and it will carry the fragrance evenly across the whole room. Put it in the direct blast of a wall AC or a table fan and the draught scatters the scent unevenly, whisking it out near the machine while leaving the rest of the room patchy. Off to the side of the airflow is the sweet spot.

Tip: in a coastal bedroom with a sea breeze, place the diffuser on the upwind side so the scent drifts in across the room.
3
Height & surface
Waist height, stable and water-safe

Scent tends to settle and drift downward, so a source at waist-to-chest height spreads more evenly than one on the floor. A dresser or chest of drawers is ideal. If it is an ultrasonic like a Sukoon or Boond, keep it on a stable, water-safe surface — the fine mist can leave a little moisture on wood or polished tops over time — and route the cord away from the bed. A reed just needs a steady shelf where the reeds won't be knocked.

Tip: keep any diffuser well out of reach of children and pets, whatever the height.
In a bedroom, where the scent comes from decides whether it feels calm or crowded.

One honest caveat: placement can only do so much if the level is wrong to begin with. Get the position right, then keep the scent low, run an ultrasonic for an hour before bed rather than all night, and let a passive reed do the quiet daytime work. Position and restraint together are what make a bedroom feel restful.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I place a diffuser in the bedroom?
Across the room from the bed, not on the bedside table. A dresser, chest of drawers or shelf about waist height is ideal, near gentle airflow but away from the direct blast of an AC or fan. From there the scent drifts to you low and even.
Can I keep a diffuser on the bedside table?
Better not to. Right at the pillow the scent concentrates where you breathe most, so it reads as too strong even on low, and an ultrasonic puts mist close to your face. Move it a metre or two to a dresser or shelf and it feels calm.
Should the diffuser be near the AC or fan?
Not in its direct blast — a strong draught scatters scent unevenly and can whisk it straight out. Place it off to the side of the airflow, where gentle movement carries the scent across the room without blowing it away.
How high should a bedroom diffuser sit?
Around waist to chest height, on a dresser or shelf. Scent drifts downward, so a source at that height spreads more evenly than one on the floor. Keep an ultrasonic on a stable, water-safe surface and cords away from the bed.
Does placement matter for a reed diffuser too?
Yes. A reed is passive and relies on air movement, so place it across the room near a little airflow — a windowsill or a shelf by the door — rather than in a still corner. Then a small 50ml reed can gently scent the whole room.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, Pune. The strategy applies to any brand's systems; the recommendations here are from the SOSA range.

Notes: Scent distribution depends on airflow and distance more than on output; placement across the room and near gentle movement gives an even, low result. Ultrasonic diffusers add mild humidity and should sit on a stable, water-safe surface; reed diffusers are alcohol-free and passive. Keep any diffuser out of reach of children and pets.
