Almost never the rose. All three can be built from roses that would smell closely related on their own, and the difference you are asking about comes from the company the rose keeps - what is above it, what is beneath it, and what adjective the copywriter attached. Fresh rose is rose with citrus, green notes and a light musk. Powdery rose is rose with iris, violet, heliotrope and soft wood. Jammy rose is rose with amber, honey, dried fruit and often oud. Three different evenings, one note word, and all of it readable from a product page.
Quick answers — read this first
What makes a rose attar fresh, powdery or jammy? The materials around the rose. Citrus, green notes, geranium and a light musk produce a fresh rose. Iris, violet, heliotrope, soft sandalwood and sometimes aldehydes produce a powdery rose. Amber, benzoin, honey, dried fruit and oud produce a jammy rose. The variety of rose contributes something, but the build around it is what decides which of the three you will be wearing.

Which build should I avoid if I dislike sweetness? The jammy one. It is sweet by construction: amber, benzoin, honey and dried fruit are all sweetness carriers, and a rose cooked into them is the densest and sweetest of the three builds. The signal words are jam, confit, stewed, honeyed, ripe, liqueur and candied, and any of them on a rose description should be treated as a reliable warning.

Are either of the SOSA roses powdery or jammy? Neither. Ameeri is Taif rose over Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron and soft oudh, which is a warm woody rose. Mastani is Damask rose beside night-blooming jasmine over oudh, which is a nocturnal floral rose. There is no iris, violet or heliotrope in the range, so nothing is powdery, and no amber, honey or dried fruit beside either rose, so nothing is jammy. If powder or jam is specifically what you want, we do not make it.
The short answer
Short answer: The company it keeps, not the rose. Citrus, green notes and light musk beside a rose make it fresh. Iris, violet, heliotrope and soft sandalwood make it powdery. Amber, benzoin, honey, dried fruit and oud make it jammy. The variety matters a little; what sits around it matters far more.
The pick: There are two roses in our range and neither is powdery or jammy. Ameeri is the warm woody-rose - Taif rose over Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron and soft oudh - at 3ml ₹385. Mastani is the nocturnal floral rose - Damask rose beside night-blooming jasmine over oudh - at 3ml ₹389. The trio holds both, from ₹1,055.
Honest note: an attar is bought unsmelled, so a list of notes is all you have. A note list describes an intention, not a smell, and nothing written here is a substitute for wearing it.
Four attars - lightest opening to deepest baseAdaa · Mastani · Ameeri · Nawaab3ml from ₹379  |  6ml from ₹669  |  12ml from ₹1,149Dab on pulse points - oil wants warmth, not rubbing6-8 hours on skin · alcohol-free · DPG-free carrier
There are four SOSA attars and they run from a bergamot-and-cardamom opening at the lightest end to white royal oud at the deepest. Adaa is the freshest, Mastani the most floral, Ameeri the warmest, Nawaab the deepest. All four are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, come with a dab applicator, and wear 6-8 hours on skin - longer on warm or oily skin. Sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, from Rs 379. None of that tells you whether you will like the smell, which is why the smallest size exists.
Straight answer
What is the difference between a fresh, a powdery and a jammy rose attar?
The company the rose keeps. Three builds, three sets of signal words, and the rose itself is the least of it.

The fresh build. Rose with citrus above it, green or geranium notes beside it, and a light musk underneath. Little or no resin, no fruit, and a short base, so the composition stays close to the cut-stem end of what rose can do. Signal words: dewy, crisp, green, petally, transparent, bright, "morning", "garden rose", "fresh-cut". If a rose description names bergamot, lemon, geranium, violet leaf or a white musk and stops, you are looking at a fresh rose. The honest limitation of the build is that freshness lives in the top register, so a fresh rose asks more of the base than people expect - a fresh rose with nothing underneath it has nowhere to go.

The powdery build. Rose with iris or orris root, violet, heliotrope, soft sandalwood, a white musk, sometimes aldehydes. The effect is soft-focus and cosmetic: the smell of face powder, of a dressing table, of makeup rather than of a garden. Signal words: soft, velvety, cosmetic, suede, iris, orris, violet, heliotrope, "vintage", "retro", "lipstick". Powder is the most polarising of the three. A reader who loves it finds it comforting and elegant; a reader who dislikes it will usually describe it as smelling of an older generation, and no amount of good material changes that reaction. It also overlaps heavily with what people call soapy.

The jammy build. Rose with amber, benzoin, honey, dried fruit - plum, date, raisin - and very often oud, sometimes saffron. The rose is cooked rather than cut: dense, preserve-like, sweet and deep. Signal words: jam, confit, stewed, syrupy, honeyed, ripe, liqueur, "rose oud", "Turkish delight", "candied". This is the build most associated with the Middle Eastern rose tradition and it is the heaviest of the three. If you dislike sweetness, this is the build to rule out, and the carriers that make it sweet are worth learning in full.

Where the variety does genuinely matter. Not as much as the build, but it is not nothing. Rose varieties differ in character, and a brand that names one has told you something a brand writing "rose" has not. We use two. Taif rose is in Ameeri and Damask rose is in Mastani, and naming them is the most specific thing we can honestly say: the names describe which rose a perfumer chose, and they are not claims about grade or geography, which this blog does not make.

Our two roses, read through the three builds. Ameeri is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. The rose is the subject; the sandalwood is a creamy floor under it; the saffron supplies warmth and a faint leathery edge; the oudh is kept soft and functions as depth rather than as a second subject. That is not a fresh rose, because it is too warm and the base is too present. It is not a powdery rose, because there is no iris, no violet and no heliotrope anywhere in it. And it is not a jammy rose, because there is no amber, no honey and no dried fruit on the list. It is a fourth thing: a warm woody rose, which is a real and well-established style and happens not to be one of the three in your question.

And the second one, which is different again. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose and oudh. Here the rose is not even the lead - the jasmine is named first and is the subject, with the Damask rose beside it rather than underneath it. Two flowers over a resinous base is the nocturnal floral build: full, deep, more about the pair of flowers than about either one. Again, no powder and no jam. If you have been choosing between the two of ours and cannot settle it from the lists, that is a reasonable place to be, and the trio puts both of them in front of you at once rather than asking you to guess.

What we do not make, plainly. There is no powdery rose attar in this range and no jammy rose attar either. If what you want is iris and violet around a rose, or a rose cooked into amber and dates, four compositions is our entire range and neither of those is in it. That is worth saying clearly, because the nearest thing is not the thing, and a brand that sells you the nearest thing on a note list you cannot smell has not done you a favour. The traditional against modern rose question is a separate decision and worth reading if you are weighing styles rather than bottles.
The rose is rarely the variable. Read what sits beside it: citrus and musk means fresh, iris and heliotrope means powdery, amber and dried fruit means jammy. Our two roses are Taif in Ameeri and Damask in Mastani, which are a warm woody rose and a nocturnal floral rose. Neither is powder and neither is jam.
If you will not guess, do not guess. The trio - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - is ₹1,055 at 3ml, which is three of the four compositions for ₹118 less than buying those three 3mls separately. It is the right purchase for somebody who has read the note lists and still cannot choose, and the wrong one for somebody who already knows which family they want.
The trio from ₹1,055

Three builds, three vocabularies

Learn the signal words for each build and you can place any rose description on any website in about ten seconds.

1
Fresh
Citrus above, musk below, and a short base
Bergamot or lemon on top, green notes or geranium beside the rose, a white musk underneath, and nothing resinous. Signal words are dewy, crisp, green, petally, transparent and "garden rose". The build reads bright and close to a cut stem. Its honest weakness is that freshness lives in the top register, so a fresh rose with almost no base has nowhere to go once the opening thins out.
Tip: Check the base on any fresh rose. A thin floor is the usual disappointment.
2
Powdery
Iris, violet and heliotrope turn a rose soft-focus
Orris root, violet, heliotrope, soft sandalwood, white musk and sometimes aldehydes. The effect is cosmetic rather than botanical: face powder, a dressing table, lipstick. Signal words are soft, velvety, suede, iris, orris, vintage and retro. It is the most polarising of the three builds, and a reader who dislikes powder will not be argued round by the quality of the materials.
Tip: If you dislike powder, rule out iris, violet and heliotrope by name.
3
Jammy
Amber, honey, fruit and oud cook the rose
Amber and benzoin for warmth, honey for weight, dried fruit such as plum, date or raisin for the preserve effect, and very often oud underneath it all. Signal words are jam, confit, stewed, syrupy, honeyed, ripe, liqueur and "rose oud". It is the heaviest and sweetest of the three builds and the one most associated with the Middle Eastern rose tradition. Rule it out first if sweetness is your objection.
Tip: Dried fruit beside a rose is the clearest jam signal on any note list.
The SOSA principle
Three rose attars can be built from closely related roses and smell like three different decades. What changes is never really the flower.
Read the two materials either side of the rose first.

The two roses we make, and the two we do not

Ameeri is Taif rose over Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron and soft oudh: a warm woody rose, at 3ml ₹385. Mastani is Damask rose beside night-blooming jasmine over oudh: a nocturnal floral rose, at 3ml ₹389. Neither is powdery, because there is no iris, violet or heliotrope in the range at all, and neither is jammy, because there is no amber, honey or dried fruit beside either rose.

The SOSA attar range
The three builds, and where our roses sit
Option When it is the right call
Fresh rose · not in our range Citrus, green, geranium, light musk · bright and close to a cut stem
Nearest thing here: Adaa is the fresh composition in the range, but its flower is jasmine sambac rather than rose, 3ml ₹379
Powdery rose · not in our range Iris, violet, heliotrope, soft wood · cosmetic and soft-focus
Why not: there is no iris, violet or heliotrope in any of the four compositions, so we do not make this and would rather say so
Warm woody rose · Ameeri 3ml ₹385 Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh · warm, creamy floor, faint leather edge
Read it as: a fourth build, neither fresh nor powdery nor jammy, with the rose as the subject
Nocturnal floral rose · Mastani 3ml ₹389 Damask rose beside night-blooming jasmine, over oudh · two flowers, resinous base
Read it as: the rose is the partner rather than the lead, and the pair of flowers is the point

If you have read both lists and still cannot choose, the trio is the honest purchase: Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together from ₹1,055, which puts both roses in front of you in one order along with the deepest thing we make. It is the right call for somebody who will not guess and the wrong one for somebody who already knows which rose they want - in which case buy that one in a 3ml and nothing else. All three are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier, 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin.

The SOSA attar range

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, hand-blended in small batches in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. There are four, and the honest way to read them is by depth - how much the base note is doing.

The SOSA attar range
Four attars, lightest to deepest - 3ml from ₹379
Attar Built on What it is, honestly 3ml
Adaa Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk The lightest of the four and the easiest first attar. Jasmine sambac is mogra, so this is also the mogra answer ₹379
Ameeri Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh The warm one. Rose and sandalwood doing most of the work, with the oudh kept soft ₹385
Mastani Night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh The most floral. A different jasmine and a different rose from Adaa and Ameeri ₹389
Nawaab White royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, tobacco leaf, amber, leather The deepest in the range. Not a first attar unless you already know you like oud ₹399
The trio Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together Three of the four at once. The honest answer when you cannot choose and will not guess ₹1,055

Four honest notes. A note list is not a smell. Every composition above is described in the words we would use ourselves, and those words still cannot tell you how it will sit on your skin - which is the whole reason the 3ml exists. On the sizes: 3ml, 6ml and 12ml are the same liquid, and the only reason to buy the larger ones is that you already know. If you have not worn it, buy the smallest and let it earn the upgrade. On wear: all four are 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and that is the only figure we publish. We do not publish a drop count, a per-application cost, or a comparison with how long anybody else's fragrance lasts - including sprays. On what we do not make: there is no standalone musk, sandalwood, amber, tuberose, vetiver, khus, aquatic or tobacco attar in this range. Four compositions is the whole range, and where your answer is not one of them, this page will say so rather than talk you into the nearest thing.

A note from Sonal

Attars are the part of this business where the marketing is worst, and I would like ours to be the boring, accurate version. Most of the category sells a bottle on adjectives - royal, exotic, hypnotic, long-lasting - and on numbers nobody has measured. You cannot smell any of it before you pay, so the words are doing all the work, and almost nobody writes them honestly.

So here is what I will and will not tell you. I will tell you what is in each of the four, in the order you meet it, and that they wear 6-8 hours on my skin. I will not tell you that one of them smells expensive, or that it will turn heads, or that it lasts twelve hours, because I cannot know the first two about you and have not measured the third. The honest sequence is: read the notes, buy the 3ml, wear it for a week, and only then buy a size. If none of our four matches what you have described to yourself, I would rather say so than sell you the nearest one.

The other thing worth knowing is how little you need. An attar is concentrated oil, and the commonest mistake is wearing it like a spray - a long press at the neck and another at the wrists. One dab at a pulse point is the dose. Two if you want it read across a dinner table. Do not rub it in; oil opens with warmth, and rubbing crushes the top of it. That is the entire dial, and most people never need the top of it. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Does the rose variety change the smell much?
Less than the build does, which surprises people. Varieties differ in character and a brand naming one has told you more than a brand writing "rose", but the materials around the rose decide whether you experience it as fresh, powdery or jammy. A single variety could be presented in all three builds and read as three different fragrances.
Is a rose-oud attar the same as a jammy rose?
They overlap often but they are not the same claim. Rose with oud is a resinous rose and can be dry or sweet depending on what else is there; it becomes jammy when amber, honey or dried fruit join it. Mastani is rose with oudh and has none of those three, which is why it reads deep and floral rather than preserve-like.
Which of the two SOSA roses is warmer?
Ameeri. Persian saffron and Indian sandalwood around a Taif rose make it the warm one, with the oudh kept soft underneath. Mastani is deeper rather than warmer: night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose over oudh, which reads nocturnal and full. Ameeri is Rs 385 for a 3ml and Mastani is Rs 389.
Should I buy the trio if I only want to compare the two roses?
Only if you genuinely cannot choose. The trio is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani from Rs 1,055 at 3ml, which does put both roses in your hands at once and adds the deepest composition we make. If you have already decided which rose you want, buy that single 3ml instead and spend nothing more. We would rather you did.
What if I want a powdery rose specifically?
Then we are not the brand for it, and that is the honest answer. There is no iris, violet or heliotrope in any of the four compositions, so nothing in the range is built to read powdery. Tell us what you wear now if you like and we will say whether any of the four fits, but we will not call Ameeri a powdery rose to make a sale.

About this guide:
  • Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the fragrance-family guidance applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer.

What this guide does not claim.
  • An attar is a fragrance and nothing else.
A note list is not a smell
  • - it names what a composition is built from and the order you meet it in, which is a description of an intention rather than a measurement, and it is
not a substitute for wearing it
  • . Nothing here should be read as advice about health, allergies or anyone's wellbeing, and no fragrance on this page is claimed to affect anybody's mood, comfort, confidence or state of mind. Where a reader describes a preference none of our four compositions matches, these guides say so and sell nothing.

SOSA attars, specified:
  • four compositions -
Adaa
  • (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk),
Ameeri
  • (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh),
Mastani
  • (night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh) and
Nawaab
  • (white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk). All four are
alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG
  • , supplied with a built-in dab applicator, and hand-blended in small batches in Pune. Sizes are
3ml, 6ml and 12ml
  • : Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179, Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199. The three-attar trio (Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani) is ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189. The same liquid fills all three sizes.

On wear.
  • SOSA publishes one figure:
6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin
  • . SOSA does not publish a drop count, a cost per application, a projection rating, or any comparison with how long another format or another company's fragrance lasts. Where a customer review reports a different number, that is one person's experience of their own skin and not a measurement SOSA stands behind.

On what is in the bottle.
  • The composition lists above name the materials a fragrance is built from. They are not a statement of grade, percentage or geographic origin, and this guide makes no claim about either. Where origin or grade matters to you, ask before you buy - that is a fair question and the answer belongs to the product page rather than to an article.

On other companies.
  • Where another fragrance brand is named in these guides it is because a reader named it, and the page answers what they asked. Nothing here states what any other company's product contains, how long it lasts, what it costs or how it performs.
Other brands named are the property of their respective owners · SOSA is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or associated with any other fragrance company named on this page
  • , and no other company has reviewed or approved this content. If a product you already own suits you, keep it - several pages in this guide say exactly that.

On availability.
  • SOSA is an online fragrance house and ships across India; it holds no retail counters, and no delivery window is quoted here. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Prices and availability change - see the live product pages.
