How home fragrance works
Every format does the same basic thing in a different way: it moves scent molecules from a product into the air, where they spread and you breathe them in. The difference is the mechanism, and that mechanism decides how strong, how steady and how long the scent is.
A candle uses heat. The flame melts a pool of scented wax, and the warmth lifts the fragrance into the room while it burns - which is why a candle scents best while lit and fades once you blow it out. A wax melt does the same thing with a flame-free warmer instead of a wick, so you get the warmth and throw without an open flame. An ultrasonic diffuser uses water and high-frequency vibration to mist a water-based fragrance into the air.
One thing worth saying plainly, because the marketing around this category is not always honest: home fragrance is about atmosphere. It makes a room feel cared-for, calm or fresh-smelling. It is not an air purifier. If a space smells stale because the air is stale, open a window first, then let fragrance do the part it is good at.
