A car is the smallest space any of us scents, and the one we sit closest to. Two or three cubic metres of air, a metre from your face, with the windows up and the heater on for four months of the year. I say this to customers constantly and it still surprises people: almost every car fragrance problem I am sent is a dose problem, not a scent problem. The bottle is not weak and the oil is not wrong. The cabin simply gives fragrance nowhere to go, and winter takes away the little ventilation that was rescuing you in October.
That is why we sell the hanging bottle and the spray at the same price. They are the same oil. One gives you a mild level that is always there and asks nothing of you; the other gives you a strong level the moment you decide you want one. Neither is the better product, and pricing them differently would only push people toward whichever we wanted to sell. Choose by how you drive: a long daily commute is a hanging car, a car that matters most when somebody else gets into it is a spray car, and plenty of people quite sensibly run both.

The part worth thinking about on a long trip is the dose, because a closed heated cabin has almost no air exchange and children are sitting in whatever level you set for hours without the option of leaving. So run a hanging bottle with the stopper tightened rather than sprays, do not spray while anyone is in the car, and open the doors properly at every stop so the cabin actually exchanges its air. If a child says the smell is bothering them or reports feeling unwell, reduce the dose, air the car or change scent. Treat that as information rather than as fussiness, and if you have any medical concern about a specific person, ask a doctor rather than a fragrance company.
Does any car fragrance help with travel sickness?
No, and we will not suggest otherwise. No SOSA product prevents, relieves or treats motion sickness, nausea, headache or migraine, and nothing in the range is sold as a remedy for any of them. If someone in your family gets carsick, the things that genuinely matter are ventilation, seating position, breaks and, where it is needed, medical advice - and a heavily scented cabin is more likely to make the experience worse than better. What a fragrance honestly does is make a car you spend hours in more pleasant to sit in when everyone is comfortable. On a trip with a passenger who is prone to travel sickness, the sensible choice is the lowest setting you can run, or none at all for that journey, with the windows properly aired at every stop.
How often should I air the car on a long journey?
At every stop, and properly. Cracking a window at a toll booth does very little; opening the doors for two or three minutes while everyone stretches does a great deal, because it lets the cabin exchange most of its air at once. That matters more in winter than at any other time of year, since with the windows up and the climate control often recirculating there is almost no turnover during the drive itself and whatever is in the cabin simply accumulates - fragrance included, but also everything else that builds up in a car with several people in it. Airing at stops is the single most useful habit on a long winter drive, and it costs nothing. It also lets you re-read the fragrance level honestly, because you come back to the car with a fresher nose.
Should I use a stronger scent so the children in the third row can smell it too?
No. A hanging bottle at the mirror is a single point source at the front of a three-row cabin, so the front seats get most of it and the third row gets little, and loosening the stopper to reach the back simply floods the front of the car long before it changes anything at the rear. On a long trip that is a particularly bad trade, because the people in front are also sitting there for six hours. If the back genuinely needs some fragrance, the controlled way to do it is a spray directed low into the air of the rear footwells before anyone gets in at the start of the day, then leave it alone. Honestly, though, most families find that a mild front-of-cabin baseline plus properly aired stops is the more comfortable arrangement for everyone.
What if the car smells of food, damp or a wet umbrella after a few hours?
Clean and ventilate rather than reaching for more fragrance. A car that has developed a genuine smell will not be fixed by adding scent on top of it, and layering fragrance over a strong odour typically produces a third smell that is worse than either. Open the doors at the next stop and let it clear, take out whatever is causing it, and deal with damp mats or spilled food at the earliest opportunity. Fragrance belongs on a clean car, where its job is to make a pleasant cabin rather than to hide an unpleasant one. That order matters everywhere but it matters most on a long trip, because six hours is more than enough time for a masked smell to become the thing everyone is thinking about.
