Skin scent gets used to mean weak, short-lived and quiet. It means none of those. Three separate properties hide under the one word soft, and until they are pulled apart nobody can say what they are buying. This page pulls them apart, and the rest of the set defers to it.
Quick answers — read this first
What does skin scent actually mean? A fragrance that stays low-projecting: its materials and dose keep it close to the wearer, roughly inside arm's reach as a picture, not a measurement. It is not a weak fragrance and not a short-lived one, which are different properties.
What is the difference between the three terms? Intensity is how strong it smells with your nose on it. Longevity is how long it stays on the skin; SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars. Projection is how far it travels from you, and a skin scent keeps that low.
Which SOSA attar is built to wear close?SOSA Adaa, from ₹379 for 3ml: a brief citrus top, then a dry floor of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood, with no oudh. SOSA Ameeri has more body, and SOSA Nawaab is built for presence.
The short answer
Short answer: A skin scent is low-projecting, not weak and not short-lived. Intensity, longevity and projection are three properties, and only the third is low in a skin scent.
The pick:SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml, one dab, judged at hour three. It is the attar built to wear close, and nothing else in the range is built the same way.
Next step: Tell us which of the three you want kept low, and we will say whether Adaa does it or whether the range does not. Ask for an attar recommendation.
The three words people run together, laid out as separate lines. The definition of a skin scent sits on the third line. The last line is the honest one: nobody can print a number for projection that holds on your skin.
Adaa is built to wear close; the other two are built with more body
What Does “Skin Scent” Actually Mean in Perfumery, and Which Attars Are Built to Wear Close?
A skin scent is a fragrance whose material choice and dose keep it low-projecting. It is not defined by being weak or short-lived. Here is the definition in five steps, and the attar that follows from it.
1. Skin scent means low-projecting, not weak. The word describes how far a fragrance travels from the person wearing it. Picture it staying inside arm's reach, as an idea and not a measurement. It can be clear under your nose and still go nowhere.
2. Intensity, longevity and projection are three properties. Intensity is how strong it smells at your own nose. Longevity is how long it remains on the skin; SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars. Projection is how far it travels. A fragrance can be high in one and low in another, and a skin scent is low in the third.
3. Material and dose keep projection low. A brief bright top over dry musks and woods stays nearer the skin than a fragrance built on resin and oud. Dose does the rest: a roll-on goes on as a dab rather than a mist, and one dab is a whisper where two is a sentence.
4. Adaa is the attar built to wear close.SOSA Adaa at ₹379 opens with Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, passes through jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, and rests on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. It is the lightest of the four and has no oudh.
5. The rest of the range is built for presence.SOSA Ameeri carries Indian sandalwood, amber and soft oudh over the same musk. SOSA Mastani and SOSA Nawaab are deeper again. One dab keeps any of them modest, but only Adaa was composed to sit low.
No honest seller can print a projection number that holds on your skin, and I will not try. What I can give you is the definition, the pyramids and a method: a 3ml, one dab, judged at hour three.
Skin scent means low-projecting, not weak and not short-lived. SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is the attar built to wear close. One 3ml, one dab, judged at hour three.
What to buy if you want a skin scent
The product
SOSA Adaa, composed with a brief citrus top over a dry floor and no oudh. An alcohol-free roll-on oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune.
The size to start on
The 3ml, at ₹379. Larger sizes, ₹669 for 6ml and ₹1,149 for 12ml, can wait until you have worn it.
Dabs, and where
One dab, low on the body: the inner wrist, or the upper chest under the collar line. Resist the throat on the first try. One dab is a whisper and two is a sentence.
At hour three
The top has left. By the published pyramid what remains is white musk with vetiver and cedarwood, clear at your own wrist and low in what it carries beyond it.
What it costs to stay on it
Nothing more until you are sure. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin, so a skin scent here does not mean re-applying; the 3ml covers the three ordinary days the test needs.
Adaa is the only attar I composed to sit low, so it is the honest answer to this question. I will not pretend a number proves it. Wear the 3ml for three ordinary days and you will know whether I am right about your skin.
If you want a skin scent, buy one 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 and nothing else yet. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, then jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, then white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. An alcohol-free roll-on oil with no oudh. One dab low on the body, then judge it at hour three, once the top has gone and the floor is all that is left.
Built to wear close is a statement about composition, and the range gives a real spread. One attar was composed to sit low, one has more body and two are made for presence. They are built for different jobs. All four are alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.
₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, then jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, then white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four and the only one with no oudh. The top leaves early and the floor is dry, which is the combination that keeps a fragrance low.
₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml. Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot, then Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, then soft oudh, amber and white musk. One dab keeps it modest, but sandalwood and amber give it more body than Adaa has. Choose it if you like a closer fragrance with some warmth to it.
₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml, ₹1,179 for 12ml. Litchi, bergamot and pink pepper, then night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, then Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A deep floral-gourmand. One dab is still a whisper, but this was composed to be present as a fragrance, which is the opposite of a skin scent.
These three words are used as if they meant one thing. They measure three different things, they can move independently, and a skin scent is defined by only one of them. Each card below takes one and says what it is not.
1
One
Intensity: how strong it is with your nose on it
Intensity is how strongly a fragrance smells when your nose is on the spot. It depends on how much of the composition is on your skin and how loud its materials are. An oud-led attar is intense almost by definition, and a citrus-and-musk one is lighter. A fragrance can be very intense at the wrist and travel nowhere, and one can be gentle at the wrist and still travel. Neither fact predicts the other, which is why a skin scent is not required to be faint.
Tip: When you test, write intensity down on its own: how strong is it with your nose right on the spot?
Nawaab at ₹399 is oud-led and the deepest of the four. It is intense by design, which is its purpose and the reason it is not a skin scent.
Longevity is how long the fragrance remains on your skin. It is a statement about time and says nothing about distance. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars, and that is the only figure I give, since how long any fragrance lasts depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day. The confusion to avoid is that a skin scent must be short-lived. A base of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood is made of materials that stay on the skin, so a close fragrance and a long one can be the same fragrance.
Tip: If a description says soft, ask what the base is. A dry base on the skin is entirely compatible with staying close.
Adaa at ₹379 carries the same stated wear as the other three attars, and its base is the dry musk and woods that keep it near.
Projection: how far it travels, and the one a skin scent keeps low
Projection is how far the fragrance travels from your skin, and how much of the space around you it fills. Three things set it: the materials, the place on the body and the amount applied. Bright, light materials lift off the skin and leave, while dry musks and woods stay low. A roll-on goes on as a dab, not a mist, which is the easiest dose to keep small. This page gives no figure for projection. The measure that counts is your own nose at hour three.
Tip: Keep arm's reach in mind as an idea, not a measurement: a skin scent is mostly yours.
Ameeri at ₹385 is built with more body than Adaa: sandalwood and amber over white musk. One dab, placed low, keeps it modest.
A skin scent is defined by one property out of three. It is allowed to be as clear at your nose and as long on your skin as any fragrance, and what makes it a skin scent is that it keeps to itself.
That reframes the question from how faint it should be to how little it should carry. Buy for low projection and you can still have a fragrance you can plainly smell at hour three.
The one composed to sit low: Adaa at ₹379: bergamot, green cardamom and neroli, three white flowers, then white musk with vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four, with no oudh, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Low in projection by design, and ordinary in stated wear.
Most disappointment comes from using one word for a problem that belongs to another. The table takes four familiar sentences and says which property each is really about.
The SOSA plan
Four common sentences, and which property each one describes
What people say
Which property it is
It is too strong
Usually projection: it travels well beyond you. Sometimes intensity: it is loud with your nose on it. Dose changes both, so try a smaller dab before concluding the bottle is wrong.
It was gone by lunch
Longevity. It says nothing about how soft or loud it was. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars, and how long it lasts for you depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day.
It is so soft I can barely smell it
Low intensity, and possibly low longevity. That is a faint fragrance, and it is not what a skin scent is. A skin scent can be perfectly clear at your own wrist.
It stays near me and it lasts
A skin scent: low projection with ordinary longevity. SOSA Adaa is composed this way on paper, with a brief citrus top over a dry floor of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. View →
Answer these two and the right close-wearing bottle chooses itself
Which of the three do you actually want kept low?
Projection: I want it to stay near me
Intensity: I dislike how strong the opening is under my nose
How do you feel about it fading while you are still out?
I want it still there at the end, only quietly (SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin)
I would rather it fade; I am happy to re-apply
Low projection, and it should last
SOSA Adaa is composed for exactly this: a brief citrus top, then a dry floor of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. One dab low on the body. The 3ml at ₹379 is all you need to find out.
Still Adaa, and the dial you hold is placement: low on the body and under clothing. Nothing in the range is shorter-lived by design, so the 3ml at ₹379 and your own dosing are the whole answer; nothing more is needed.
Adaa's citrus top leaves early and the dry floor stays. If even that opening is too much, SOSA Khayaal is the transparent alternative, a perfume oil from ₹599 for 10ml.
The first minutes are the loudest part of any fragrance, so judge Adaa at hour three, not at hour zero. If you still want something airier, describe the opening you dislike first.
The one with more body, if you like warmth: Ameeri at ₹385: saffron and rose, Indian sandalwood, soft oudh, amber and white musk. A single dab keeps it modest, and amber and sandalwood give it more to say.
The fork is how much the fragrance should say. Adaa is composed to sit low: brief top, dry floor. Ameeri has sandalwood and amber and more to say, and one dab keeps it modest. Pick on the word you used in your own head.
Two rows: the attar composed to sit low and the one with more body. The note underneath says what neither of them is, which is a promise about distance, and what to do if your word was intensity rather than projection.
Both rows start small: the 3ml of Adaa at ₹379, or the 3ml of Ameeri at ₹385. The larger sizes are for after a season of wear: ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml for Adaa and ₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml for Ameeri. Neither is a promise about distance. This page gives no projection figure, because none would hold across skins, clothing and days. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars and nothing further. White musk is a base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and SOSA makes no musk-only fragrance. A patch test on first use is the only skin advice we give. If your real complaint was intensity, the fix is a smaller dab and a later verdict; failing that, SOSA Khayaal at ₹599 for 10ml is the transparent perfume oil to try instead. Nobody can promise you what another person will make of it, and I will not. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies: Ask for an attar recommendation and tell us which of the three you meant.

A note from Sonal
The word I hear most from people choosing a fragrance is soft. When I ask what they mean, it is usually one of three complaints wearing one word: too loud under their own nose, too far-travelling, or gone before the afternoon. I now ask a plain question: too strong, too short or too far? It saves bottles.
That is why one page should own the definition. A skin scent is low-projecting. It does not have to be faint and it does not have to fade; it has to keep to itself, and that comes from materials and dose. Adaa is the one I composed with that in mind, a brief bright top over a dry floor with no oudh. The others I composed to be present, and they are good at it.
I will not print a distance, because projection depends on the skin, the clothing and the day. What I can offer is a 3ml, one dab, three ordinary days and a verdict at hour three, and your own nose is the instrument. Nobody can promise you what anyone else will make of how you smell, so decide for yourself. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Is a skin scent just a weak fragrance?
No. Weak means low intensity: faint even with your nose on it. A skin scent means low projection: it keeps close to you. The two can overlap, but they do not have to. SOSA Adaa can be clearly present at your own wrist at hour three while carrying little beyond it, and that combination is the point.
What is the difference between intensity and projection?
Intensity is how strong the fragrance smells when your nose is on it. Projection is how far it travels from you. A fragrance can be very intense at the wrist and still travel little. They are separate dials, and a skin scent sets only the second one low.
Is an oil attar always a skin scent?
No. A roll-on goes on as a dab, not a mist, but materials and dose decide. SOSA Nawaab is oud-led and deep, and it is an oil attar too. SOSA Adaa is the one composed to sit low, with a brief citrus top over white musk, vetiver and cedarwood.
Is there a number for how far a fragrance projects?
None worth trusting. Projection depends on the materials, the dose, where you put it, what you are wearing and the day, so a figure would be invented. This page gives none. The measure that counts is your own nose, at hour three, after three ordinary days.
Which SOSA attar should I try first for close wear?
SOSA Adaa, in the 3ml at ₹379. One dab low on the body, in the season you will wear it, judged at hour three. If you like the idea of close but want more warmth, SOSA Ameeri is the next step, with sandalwood and amber, and it starts at the 3ml too.
The one built the other way, and good at it: Nawaab at ₹399: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf over amber, leather and white musk. Oud-led and the deepest of the four: right for presence, wrong for this question.
SOSA — A Quiet Startone 3ml of Adaa, one dab low on the body, judged at hour three
SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood: composed with a brief top and a dry floor, and no oudh. It is the attar built to wear close. Ameeri is the one with more body. Alcohol-free, hand-blended in Pune. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range and its published note lists; the definitions of intensity, longevity and projection apply to any brand.
Facts verified 16 October 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, all alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on perfume oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, hand-blended in Pune and sold in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, with a stated wear of 6–8 hours on skin: Adaa (top Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom, neroli; heart jasmine sambac, magnolia, ylang ylang; base white musk, vetiver, cedarwood; no oudh) from ₹379, Ameeri (top Persian saffron, pink pepper, bergamot; heart Taif rose, Indian sandalwood; base soft oudh, amber, white musk) from ₹385, Mastani (top litchi, bergamot, pink pepper; heart night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose; base Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla, tonka) from ₹389 and Nawaab (top white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco leaf; base amber, leather, white musk) from ₹399, plus the Attar Trio (Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani) from ₹1,055. Khayaal is a perfume oil, not an attar (sparkling bergamot, neroli, black tea, amberwood), from ₹599 for 10ml. White musk is a base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab; SOSA makes no musk-only fragrance and no musk soliflore. No projection figure is given for any product on this page, and the definitions of intensity, longevity and projection here are general perfumery usage, not SOSA measurements.
