Cooling is not ventilation, and the shutter makes it worse

Stale air in an air-conditioned showroom is one of the most misdiagnosed problems in retail, and the misdiagnosis is contained in a single confusion: the belief that air conditioning ventilates. It does not. A split air conditioner - the type in the overwhelming majority of Indian retail units - is a recirculating device. It draws air from the room through a filter, passes it across a coil that is colder than the air's dew point, and blows the cooled and partially dehumidified air back into the same room. At no point does it introduce air from outside, and at no point does it remove anything except heat and some moisture. In a showroom with sealed glazing, a shutter down overnight and a door that is closed most of the day to keep the cooling in, the consequence is that the same body of air circulates continuously. It gets colder. It does not get fresher. That explains the customer's experience of a shop that is comfortable and simultaneously stale, and it explains why turning the temperature down never helps. The unit itself is also, very often, a contributor rather than a neutral party. Three components are worth checking and all of them are routine maintenance. Filters accumulate dust, fibres from stock and whatever the street supplies, and a heavily loaded filter is both a restriction on airflow and a substrate for its own smell; in a retail environment with textiles and constant footfall they load faster than in a home and should be cleaned or replaced far more often than most shops manage. The indoor coil collects a film over time, and because it operates wet during cooling, that film stays damp - which is why a unit can produce a distinct note in the first minutes after being switched on. And the drain pan with its condensate line is the item most likely to be genuinely at fault: if the line is partially blocked, water stands in the pan continuously, in the direct air path of the unit. A service visit that cleans filters, cleans the coil and clears the condensate line costs a fraction of any fragrance system and resolves the complaint outright in a meaningful proportion of cases. Recommending it before recommending a purchase is simply honest. Real ventilation then has to be added deliberately, because nothing in the shop's equipment provides it. The most practical arrangement in retail is a through draught before opening and after closing: front shutter or door and any rear or stockroom opening both open for fifteen to twenty minutes, so air moves through the unit rather than merely into it. That flushes the overnight accumulation before customers arrive and clears the day's before the shop is sealed. The stockroom should be aired at the same time, since it is generally the worst air in the building - full of cartons, unventilated, and exchanged onto the shop floor every time somebody goes through the door. Where a unit has no rear opening at all, a floor fan positioned to push air out of the shopfront creates directional flow and achieves a good part of the same result. Only then does fragrance have a coherent role, and two properties of a recirculating environment shape how it should be used. The first is that fragrance accumulates: with no exchange, whatever is released stays in the loop, and the concentration climbs through the trading day rather than being flushed away. The level therefore has to be set lower than instinct suggests, and adjusted after a week of real observation rather than judged on the first morning. The second is that conditioned air is dry, which suits lighter, cleaner registers and makes heavy or sweet ones feel dense. And the retail rule applies throughout: the staff stand in it for nine hours while customers pass through in ten minutes, they are adapted and cannot judge it, and anybody who says it affects them should have it reduced or switched off.
