This is the one question in this block where a set is straightforwardly the right answer, and the reason is not that three is better than one. It is that you have correctly identified that you cannot answer the question. Woody is not a preference, it is a category containing at least four distinct ones, and nobody can pick between them on somebody else's behalf. So stop trying, and buy the format that moves the decision to the person who is able to make it.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the different types of woody fragrance? Broadly four. Creamy sandalwood-led compositions, which are soft and milky. Dry woods, which are austere and almost papery. Smoky or resinous woods, which lean towards incense and burnt materials. And ambered woods, where resins and vanillic materials round everything off and add sweetness. Somebody who says they like woods might mean any one of those, and might actively dislike the other three.

Should I buy a set or one bottle when I don't know their exact taste? A set, when you cannot narrow the field yourself. Three 3ML bottles at ₹1,055 let them make the decision, which is the one decision you are not equipped to make. Once they have made it, a 12ML of the winner at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a straightforward second purchase.

What does the SOSA three-attar set actually cover? Three readings within one register. Ameeri is rose and Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron over soft oudh - the softer, creamier side. Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron - the driest. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine and damask rose over oudh - the darkest and most floral. It does not cover smoke, and it has no ambered-sweet option in it.
The short answer
Short answer: Woody covers at least four different preferences and you cannot choose between them for somebody else - so buy the format that lets them choose, which is three small bottles rather than one large one.
The pick: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles, which is the one purchase on this page designed for a question you genuinely cannot answer yourself.
Honest note: the set is fixed and all three scents sit in one register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Adaa, the one bright scent, is not in it.
The trio, and the alternative - at a glanceThe trio is one register: rose, oud, sandalwood. Three eveningsFixed set ₹1,055 · Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani · Adaa not includedWant contrast? Three chosen 3ML from ₹1,153 - three boxesAlcohol-free oil · worn at the wrist
SOSA's three-attar set is a fixed pairing of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at Rs 1,055 for three 3ML bottles. All three sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals, built for evenings. If what you want is contrast rather than depth, the route is three 3ML singles chosen yourself, from Rs 1,153, which is the only way to include Adaa, the one bright scent in the range. Those arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set.
Straight answer
Is a set of three better than guessing which kind of woods they like?
Yes, and this is the clearest case for it in the whole range.

Why guessing fails. Woody is four preferences wearing one word. Creamy sandalwood is soft and almost milky. Dry woods are austere, with nothing rounded about them. Smoky woods lean into incense and char. Ambered woods add resins and sweetness. Somebody who loves one of those can genuinely dislike the other three, and a 12ML bottle of the wrong one at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is an expensive way to find that out.

The direct answer: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles. Ameeri covers the softer, creamier side - Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh. Nawaab covers the dry side - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, the least sweet thing we make. Mastani covers the dark and floral side - night-blooming jasmine, damask rose, oudh. Three positions inside woods, and he tells you which one within a fortnight.

What it does not cover, so you are not surprised. There is no smoky attar in this range and nothing built as an ambered-sweet woody. So the set answers three of the four questions you listed, not four. If his answer turns out to be smoke, that is a useful thing to have learned and it will be answered somewhere else.

And then the real bottle. The point of three small ones is the large one that follows. Once he names the winner, a 12ML at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a decision rather than a gamble - and that is the bottle that actually gets finished. At 6ML the set is ₹1,859. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: you cannot pick between four kinds of woods on his behalf, so buy the format that transfers the choice to him and keep the large bottle for afterwards.
The three-attar set is ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles, ₹1,859 at 6ML. It is a fixed pairing - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - and all three sit in the same register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Worth knowing before you order: Adaa is not in it.

Four things people mean when they say woody

Three reasons a set beats a guess here, and none of them is that three bottles are better value than one.

1
The four meanings
Woody is a category, not a preference
Creamy sandalwood, dry woods, smoke and ambered woods behave so differently that somebody devoted to one can find the others unwearable. The person who told you he loves woods almost certainly has one of the four in mind and has never needed to say which, because nobody has ever asked. You cannot infer it from the bottles on his shelf either, since labels describe all four with the same word. This is a genuine information gap rather than laziness on your part.
Tip: He has a specific answer. He has just never had to say it out loud.
2
Transfer the decision
Buy the format, not the guess
A set is not three gifts. It is one gift whose job is to produce an answer, and it is the only shape that works when the missing information lives inside somebody else's head. Three 3ML bottles at ₹1,055 give him a fortnight of direct comparison, which is more reliable than any conversation you could have had and considerably more reliable than a shop assistant. The 10 per cent saving against three singles is real, but it is not the reason to buy it.
3
The follow-up
The small bottles exist to make the large one safe
This is the part people forget, and it is what makes the set good value rather than merely cheap. Three small bottles turn the next purchase into a certainty. A 12ML at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is a lot of fragrance for somebody to wear through, and it is only worth buying once you know which one. Birthday now, the real bottle later, and nothing wasted in between - which also means the gift keeps working after it has been opened.
Tip: Three small bottles now are how the large bottle stops being a gamble.
The SOSA principle
Woody is four preferences wearing one word.
Which is exactly the situation a set is for: not because three is generous, but because the answer lives in his head and three small bottles are how you get it out.

Handing the decision to the person who can make it

Match the set against the four meanings before ordering, so you know which of them it can and cannot answer.

The SOSA attar edit
Which kind of woods, and what covers it
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
You have no idea which of the four he means The three-attar set at ₹1,055. Three positions inside woods, and an answer within a fortnight.
Creamy, soft, sandalwood-led Ameeri at ₹385 for 3ML. Taif rose and Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron over soft oudh.
Dry, austere, nothing sweet Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ML or ₹699 for 6ML. White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron.
Smoky or ambered-sweet woods Not in this range - there is no smoky attar and no ambered-sweet one. Worth knowing before you order rather than after.

If it turns out that what he dislikes is sweetness rather than any particular wood, Amber without the sweetness narrows it down to one bottle. And if his existing woody bottles have all started smelling the same, Woody bottles that smell alike explains why that happens. The set and the four attars are here.

The SOSA attar edit

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist, hand-blended in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by what you actually know about the person's taste, which is what decides whether a fixed set or three chosen bottles is the right answer.

The SOSA attar edit
Five answers by what you actually know about their taste - from ₹1,055 to ₹1,859
Option Best for What it is, honestly From
The three-attar set, 3ML x 3 They already wear rose, oud or big florals Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani - one register, three evenings. Fixed: Adaa is not in it ₹1,055
Three chosen 3ML singles You want contrast, not depth Any three of the four, chosen by you. The only route that includes Adaa. Three boxes, not one set ₹1,153
One 12ML of a scent you are sure of You know exactly what they wear A size they finish rather than sample, when guessing is not required ₹1,149
The three-attar set, 6ML x 3 The same three, in a size that lasts Where the trio is right and 3ML would run out too quickly ₹1,859
Solid perfume tin 15g When a roll-on is not right Solid balm in a metal tin - nothing to spill, nothing to leak in a bag ₹500

Four honest notes. The three-attar set is fixed - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, in one size tier at a time. Adaa, the bergamot and cardamom one, is not in it, so if the brighter style is what the person wears, that means buying Adaa separately. All three trio scents sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals - so the set is depth rather than contrast; if contrast is the point, choose three 3ML singles yourself and know that they arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set, because there is no build-your-own set on the store. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist; the designer-inspired line is an alcohol-based spray and a different product entirely, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any fragrance house it names. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The hardest fragrance gift is not the one where you know nothing. It is the one where you know just enough. You can name the bottle they have worn for six years. You also know that buying it again is not a gift, it is a refill - and that buying something wildly different is a coin toss with your money on it.

So people reach for a set, and most fragrance sets quietly mislead. They are sold as exploration when they are really one house's single idea, broken into three bottles. I would rather tell you what ours actually is. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are three evenings, not three directions. Rose, oud, sandalwood, saffron, night jasmine. If the person you are buying for already lives in that register, the set is genuinely good and the discount is real. If they wear something bright and fresh, it is the wrong set, and no amount of my writing changes that.

The answer in that case is not a different set. It is three bottles you pick yourself - and yes, that costs about a hundred rupees more than the fixed three, and yes, they arrive in three boxes rather than one. I would rather you knew both of those things before you ordered than after. Adaa is the only bright one we make, and it is not in the set. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main kinds of woody fragrance?
Creamy sandalwood-led, dry woods, smoky or incense-led, and ambered woods where resins and sweetness round it off. They behave very differently, and somebody who loves one can dislike the rest. That is why woody on its own is not enough information to buy from.
Does the three-attar set cover all four?
Three of them, honestly. Ameeri is the softer sandalwood-led side, Nawaab is the dry side and Mastani is the dark, floral side. There is no smoky attar in the SOSA range and nothing built as an ambered-sweet woody, so if his answer is smoke, this set will not contain it.
Why not just buy one bottle and hope?
Because a 12ML is ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 and it is the size somebody wears for months. Getting it wrong is expensive and awkward. Three 3ML bottles at ₹1,055 buy you the answer first, and the large bottle afterwards is then a certainty rather than a hope.
How long before he can tell me which one he prefers?
A fortnight of ordinary wearing is usually enough with three this distinct. A 3ML is a real amount of attar rather than a sample vial, so he is judging it across normal days rather than on a card in a shop, which is the only test that means anything.
Is the set actually cheaper than buying three singles?
Yes. The set is ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles, and the same three bought individually come to ₹1,173 - about 10 per cent more. Buying them separately also means three boxes instead of one, and the only reason to do it is if you want Adaa in the mix, since Adaa is not part of the fixed set.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the gifting advice applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer - every scent is recommended here on what a person has said they like.

SOSA attars, specified: alcohol-free concentrated fragrance oil in a roll-on bottle, applied at the wrist rather than sprayed. Four scents: Adaa (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk - the one bright scent in the range), Ameeri (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh), Mastani (night-blooming jasmine, damask rose, oudh) and Nawaab (white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron). Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab share oudh, sandalwood and rose materials and sit in one register; Adaa is the outlier.
