Oud and amber are the two great winter directions and they are genuinely different choices, not two words for "rich". One is dry and mineral, the other warm and resinous. Here is how to decide whether to choose oud or amber for winter - and why you may not have to.
Quick answers — read this first
What is the actual difference? Oud is dry, woody and mineral with a faint sweetness. Amber is warm, resinous and slightly powdery, built from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla.
Which is easier to wear? Amber, generally. Oud is more assertive and more distinctive; amber is more comforting and more familiar.
Do I have to choose? Not really. Nawaab carries both - white royal oud at the top of the structure, amber and leather underneath.
The short answer
Winter rewards material, not volume. Cold air slows release and lowers projection, so what you want is depth - real oud, sandalwood, rose - rather than a louder composition.
The non-negotiable. Moisturise the application point. Cold, dry skin is the worst surface a fragrance can sit on. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free, so it will not sting cracked winter skin.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. For winter, Nawaab 3ml at ₹399 - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron. December is the season it was built for.
Illustrative only. Cold air slows a fragrance down: projection drops, development stretches out, and deep materials get the time they need. Winter is when a rich attar finally has room to unfold.
Oud if you want distinction; amber if you want comfort. Oud is dry, woody and mineral - it makes a statement and not everyone enjoys it. Amber is warm, resinous and slightly powdery - it is comforting, familiar and much easier to wear in mixed company. Both bloom in cold air for the same reason: they are base materials that need time. In practice many good winter compositions use both, which is what Nawaab does: white royal oud over an amber, tobacco and leather base.
Short version: oud for distinction, amber for comfort. And the best winter compositions usually contain both.
Want the short path?Nawaab is both - white royal oud over an amber and leather base.
These two words dominate winter fragrance marketing and are frequently used as though they were interchangeable superlatives. They are not - they describe genuinely different experiences.
What "good in winter" should mean
A good winter attar is one with enough material in it to survive being slowed down. Cold air reduces projection and stretches development, so what reads as too much in May reads as complete in December - and what was perfect in May can read as thin.
1
Criterion one
Oud: dry, mineral, assertive
Real oudh smells of polished wood, dry earth and a faint sweetness - and in its cheaper grades, of smoke and something animal. It is assertive: people notice it and have opinions. White royal oud, the grade in Nawaab, is the cleanest and driest end of the family and the easiest to wear, but it is still unmistakably oud.
2
Criterion two
Amber: warm, resinous, comforting
Amber is an accord rather than a material - labdanum, benzoin, vanilla and resins producing a golden, faintly powdery warmth. It is the more universally liked of the two: comforting rather than challenging, and far less likely to divide a room.
Badly made oud is harsh, flat and synthetic - one loud note that never develops. Badly made amber is simply sweet, indistinguishable from any other sweetness. Knowing each one's failure mode is how you test a bottle before committing.
4
Criterion four
Winter rewards material, not volume
Because everything is slowed and quietened, what you notice in cold air is complexity rather than force. This is when real materials earn their price: real white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Taif rose, Kashmir saffron keep revealing facets over hours, while a synthetic accord simply persists unchanged. No synthetic oudh, no synthetic rose, no DPG carriers in anything I make.

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better
I would push most first-time buyers toward amber-warmth over oud, and Nawaab is the exception only because its white royal oud is the gentlest grade there is. If you have never worn oud, buy a 3ml and find out before committing.
The honest position
Oud is a statement. Amber is a comfort. Both need cold air.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: real white royal oud rather than synthetic, amber used structurally beneath it, and a 3ml at ₹399 so testing an assertive material is cheap. Where another house might suit you better: if you want a pure resinous amber as the main event, buy from a house that specialises in it.
"Winter means heavy, so buy the strongest thing." Strength and depth are different. What winter rewards is material - real oud, real sandalwood, real rose - not simply a louder composition.
✕
"Light scents are wasted in winter." Not at all. A light composition at two or three dabs is a perfectly good cold-weather office scent; you are just adjusting the dose upward rather than changing the bottle.
✕
"Attar lasts longer in winter." Usually a little less on the skin, not more - cold, dry skin holds fragrance poorly. Moisturise first - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.
Buy a 3ml of the oud before a 12ml of it. Nawaab carries both directions, and Ameeri is the gentler warmth if oud is not for you.
The SOSA attar range
All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Nawaab carries oud and amber; Ameeri offers warmth through rose, sandalwood and saffron instead.
Winter is the season attars were made for, and the reason is physical rather than romantic. Cold air slows everything down - projection drops, the development stretches out, and materials that would shout in May finally get the hours they need to unfold properly.
It is also the season when the difference between real and synthetic materials becomes obvious. Real white royal oud, real Mysore sandalwood, real Taif rose - these keep revealing facets over six hours in cold air. A synthetic accord simply sits there, unchanged, until it stops. Everything I make is alcohol-free and DPG-free with the materials named, and December is when that choice pays for itself.
One practical thing, more useful than anything I can sell you: moisturise the spot before you apply. Cold, dry skin is the worst surface a fragrance can sit on, and an unscented cream underneath will do more for your winter longevity than a more expensive bottle.
Frequently asked questions
Is oud or amber better for winter?
Both suit cold air. Oud is dry, mineral and assertive - a statement material. Amber is warm, resinous and comforting - much easier in mixed company. Nawaab carries white royal oud over an amber and leather base, so you do not strictly have to choose.
Which SOSA attar is best for winter?
Nawaab - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, tobacco, leather and amber. At 9.5/10 it is the deepest thing in the range, and cold air is exactly what it was built for. From ₹399.
Why does my attar feel weaker in winter?
Because cold air slows the release and lowers projection - the fragrance is still there, it is simply staying closer to you. Apply two or three dabs rather than one, and moisturise the spot first, since dry winter skin holds fragrance poorly.
How many dabs of attar in cold weather?
Two or three, against one in summer. Cold lowers projection by roughly a step, so the summer dose will read as almost nothing in January.
Should I moisturise before applying attar?
In winter, yes, and it is the single most useful habit in this guide. An unscented cream at the base of the throat, then one to three dabs of attar on top. It measurably extends how long the fragrance stays.
