This is the one room where my whole trade takes a step back. You scent a bedroom for the arrival into rest — but a child's room is scented for very little, or nothing at all, because clean, aired air is the safest air a small person can breathe.
Quick answer
Newborn's room: no added fragrance. Air it well and keep it clean — that is the whole approach.
Older child's room: if anything, a faint passive alcohol-free reed, placed high and well out of reach.
Always: air first, keep it very low, and never near the bed or cot. No candles, sprays or plug-ins.
The short version
Short answer: Air the room, keep it clean, and add scent only sparingly — a passive
Evening Calm reed kept faint and out of reach is the gentlest option. For a newborn, use none.
The pick: alcohol-free
reed from ₹749 on a high shelf; or a
Boond ₹799 run briefly in the corridor outside the room, never over the bed.
Parents come to this question wanting to do something nice for a child's room, and often a little worried about what's safe. I'd rather be honest than sell you more than you need: the best thing you can do for a nursery is air it and keep it clean, and fragrance — if it appears at all — should be the faintest finishing touch, kept well away from the child. A room does not need to be scented to be lovely.
The safe approach
How to keep a child's room fresh, safely
1. Air first, always. Ten minutes of open window each day clears the stuffiness that makes a room feel stale far better than any fragrance. This is the single most important step, and it's free.
2. For a newborn, use no added scent. Small airways are sensitive; fresh, clean air is the safest choice. There's no fragrance a newborn's room needs.
3. For an older child, keep it very low or none. If you'd like a soft note, a passive alcohol-free reed is the gentlest — no heat, no mist, no flame. Keep it barely-there.
4. Place it well out of reach. High on a shelf or wardrobe top, never near the bed or cot, so little hands never touch or spill the oil. Many parents keep it in the corridor outside instead.
In one line: air the room, keep any scent faint and out of reach, and for a newborn use nothing at all — clean fresh air is the safest choice.
The gentlest option
SOSA Evening Calm reed — lavender & chamomile ₹799
Alcohol-free and completely passive: no heat, no electricity, no mist. Set it high and out of reach and it holds the faintest soft, clean note in the room's air. Of all our scents, this soft lavender-chamomile is the one I'd point a parent towards. Keep it barely-there.
If you prefer a diffuser
SOSA Boond mini diffuser ₹799
A small ultrasonic diffuser is best kept outside a child's room — run it briefly in the corridor so only a faint drift reaches in, then switch it off. It adds mild humidity, so I wouldn't leave it running overnight near a sleeping child. A reed is the calmer choice inside the room itself.

Masking a musty smell with fragrance |
If a child has asthma, allergies or any breathing sensitivity, use no added fragrance and speak to your paediatrician. When in doubt, the answer is always less.
In a child's room, the safest fragrance is nearly always fresh, clean air — everything else is a faint, optional finish.
Sonal Sahani · SOSA
My honest caveat, and I mean it more here than anywhere: fragrance must never be used to cover a smell in a child's room. A musty or sour note means something needs cleaning, airing or drying — a damp mattress, unwashed linen, a shut monsoon window — and scent over the top of it only hides a problem a small person is still breathing. Fix the source, air the room, and let scent be the smallest possible touch, if any. A portion of whatever you buy goes towards girl-child education through Nanhi Kali, which feels especially fitting on this page.
Frequently asked
Is it safe to use fragrance in a nursery or newborn's room?
For a newborn, my honest advice is to use no added fragrance and rely on a well-aired, clean room instead. Babies have sensitive airways and the safest air is simply fresh air. As a child grows past the newborn stage you can introduce the faintest passive scent, kept very low and well out of reach, but air and cleanliness always come first.
What is the safest type of fragrance for a child's room?
A passive, alcohol-free
reed diffuser is the safest option because it has no heat, no electricity, no mist and no flame. Place it high on a shelf or wardrobe top, well out of a child's reach, and keep it faint. Avoid candles, sprays and plug-ins in a child's room.
Where should I place a diffuser in a kids' room?
Well out of reach and never near the bed or cot. A reed belongs high on a shelf or on top of a wardrobe, away from little hands, since the oil should never be handled or spilled. Many parents prefer to keep a small
Boond just outside the room, in the corridor, so only a faint drift reaches inside.
Can I run an ultrasonic diffuser overnight in a child's room?
I would not leave one running all night in a child's room. If you use a
Boond, run it for a short while in the early evening and switch it off before sleep, or keep it in the corridor outside. A passive reed is the better overnight choice because it needs no power and adds no moisture. Keep scent very low whatever you choose.
Gentle by design
Air the room first — then, if anything, the faintest soft note kept out of reach.
For an older child's room, a passive Evening Calm reed high on a shelf is the gentlest choice. For a newborn, clean fresh air is all the room needs.
