Humid coastal room? Reed or Vaayu, not ultrasonic overnight.
The two questions that decide it
Before comparing specifications, answer these. One: is your bedroom humid? If you are in a coastal city, a monsoon-heavy region, or a ground-floor room that feels damp, added moisture is the last thing you want at night — which quietly rules against a misting ultrasonic. Two: do you want anything running while you sleep? Some people like a device they can leave; others want scent that arrives, sets the room, and switches off. Your honest answers to those two matter far more than tank sizes or light colours.

The reed — the calm default
For most bedrooms in most Indian homes, a passive reed diffuser is genuinely the right answer, and I say that as someone who sells the expensive machine too. It is silent, needs no power, adds no moisture, and holds a constant, very low level you can sleep through without ever thinking about it. There is nothing to switch off, nothing to refill with water, nothing to hum in the dark. An Evening Calm reed on the bedside or dresser is, for a great many people, the whole solution.
The ultrasonic — for the ritual, run then off
An ultrasonic like the Boond or Sukoon earns its place when you like the ritual: a soft night light, a cool mist, a stronger and adjustable scent set going as you get ready for bed. The honest limitation is the water. Because it mists moisture into the air, it is best treated as a before-bed device — run it 30–45 minutes, let the timer stop it — rather than left going all night, and in a humid room I'd keep the runs short or reach for the reed instead. Used that way it is lovely; used as an all-night mister in a damp coastal room, it fights you.
The Vaayu — when humidity or scheduling is the real problem
The waterless Vaayu exists precisely for the two situations where the others struggle. It nebulises fragrance with no water, so it adds no humidity — the reason it wins in a coastal Chennai or Mumbai bedroom where you don't want a misting device at night. And it schedules from a phone app, running below 38 dB, so you can set it to scent the room before bedtime and switch itself off overnight without you doing anything. It is the premium choice, and worth it only if humidity or scheduling is a genuine problem for you — not simply because it is the most capable machine.
One honest caveat that applies to all three: none of them fixes a stuffy or damp bedroom. If the room smells close when you walk in, sort the airflow and any moisture first — a device only crowns clean, dry, aired air. Get that right, and in a normal dry bedroom the humble reed quietly out-performs the machine that costs fifteen times as much.
Frequently asked questions
Notes: SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free; a 50ml lasts roughly 6–8 weeks. Ultrasonic diffusers (Boond, Sukoon) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance and add mild humidity; the Vaayu is waterless and adds none, running below ~38 dB. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels — SOSA is independent and not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Fragrance crowns a clean, dry, aired bedroom and does not mask damp; address airflow and moisture first. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
