Founder Diaries · Welcome Hampers
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 6 min read Updated August 2026
A candle looks lovely in a hamper photo. But a welcome hamper isn't a photo — it's an object that has to survive a drive, sit in a warm room, and pass a hotel's fire policy before a guest ever sees it. On the things that actually matter for a hamper — transit, safety, guest effort and keepsake value — the reed diffuser wins for most weddings. But there's an honest case for a candle too, and I'll give it.
Quick answers
Reed or candle for a welcome hamper? Usually the reed diffuser — no flame, no melting, no lighter needed, and guests fly it home. A candle is charming but carries fire risk and burns down fast.

When does a candle still fit? As a decorative, unlit accent on a styled table — not as the room scent. For scent that lasts weeks, choose a reed from ₹749.
The short answer
Short answer: a reed diffuser is the better welcome-hamper choice for most weddings — flame-free, heat-proof, effortless and long-lasting — while a candle suits only a decorative, styled accent where safety and transit aren't concerns.
The pick: a soft single like Garden Bloom or Evening Calm, one signature across every room.
Source in bulk: the SOSA reed diffusers — 25 to 500+ units, made in India, alcohol-free. Write to sosahomeandbody@gmail.com.

The five things that actually decide it

When people ask me "reed or candle," they're usually picturing the aesthetic. But a welcome hamper is a logistics problem wearing a pretty ribbon. Five practical questions settle it, and on four of them the reed comes out ahead.

Reed vs candle, on what matters
The five questions for a welcome hamper
1. Will it survive transit? Reed: yes — sealed, flat, heat-proof. Candle: melts and pools in a warm car or staging room.

2. Will the hotel allow it in the room? Reed: almost always — no flame. Candle: often forbidden in rooms for fire safety.

3. Does the guest have to do anything? Reed: slot in the reeds, done. Candle: needs a lighter and someone willing to light it.

4. How long does it last? Reed: 6–8 weeks, passively. Candle: a small hamper candle burns down in a few sittings.

5. Do they keep it? Reed: yes — alcohol-free, airline-friendly, comes home. Candle: usually left behind, half-burnt.
In one line: the reed wins on transit, safety, effort and longevity; the candle wins only on a first-glance decorative look.

The head-to-head, at a glance

Here's the same comparison in one table, so you can see where each earns its place — because a candle isn't wrong, it's just wrong for the job a hamper item has to do.

Reed diffuser vs candle · welcome hamper
Factor Reed diffuser Welcome-hamper candle
Flame / fire risk None — hotel-safe Open flame; often banned in rooms
Heat in transit Unaffected; ships sealed Softens, pools, can leak wax
Guest effort Set reeds once, works alone Needs lighting each time
Longevity 6–8 weeks passively A few sittings, then gone
Carry home Alcohol-free, airline-friendly Rarely taken home
Best use The room scent guests keep A styled, unlit decorative accent

When a candle still earns its place

I'm not anti-candle — we make one, an amber rose candle at ₹599, hand-poured in micro-batches. A candle is genuinely lovely as a decorative, unlit object styled on a welcome table, or in a hamper for guests staying in a private villa where transit is short and there's no hotel fire rule to worry about. What it can't reliably do is be the room's scent across a large, spread-out destination wedding where boxes travel for hours and sit in warm rooms. So my honest steer: if you want one dependable scent in every guest room, choose the reed. If you want a pretty accent for the eye and you're not counting on it to perfume the room, a candle can join the hamper — just don't rely on it being lit.

The SOSA principle
Choose the hamper item for the journey it has to make, not the photo it makes.
A reed can't melt, can't catch, and can't be forgotten unlit — which is why it's the scent that actually reaches the guest and comes home with them.

One honest caveat that applies to both: neither a reed nor a candle covers a musty or smoke-heavy room — fragrance crowns a clean, aired space, it doesn't mask a problem. Ask the property to air rooms before turndown. Do that, choose a soft signature scent, pack the reed upright with a small setup card, and you'll have the welcome you pictured, in every room, whether or not anyone remembers to strike a match.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reed diffuser or a candle better for a wedding welcome hamper?
For most weddings a reed diffuser is better. It has no flame, so most hotels allow it in rooms where they forbid a lit candle; it does not melt in a warm car or staging room; it works the moment a guest arrives, with no lighter needed; and being alcohol-free it is airline-friendly, so guests carry it home. A candle can look charming on a table but carries fire risk, melts in heat, needs lighting, and burns down. Choose a reed unless you specifically want a decorative unlit candle.
Do hotels allow candles in guest rooms?
Many do not allow lit candles in guest rooms for fire-safety reasons, especially resorts and heritage properties. A reed diffuser sidesteps this entirely because it has no flame or heat, which is why it is the fragrance format most venues are comfortable placing in a welcome hamper. Always confirm with your property, but a reed is the safer default.
Will a candle melt in a wedding welcome hamper?
It can. Candles soften and pool in a hot car boot, an un-air-conditioned staging room or a warm-climate venue, which is common at Indian destination weddings. A reed diffuser is unaffected by heat, ships sealed and packs flat, so it survives road and air transit reliably. This is a major reason planners choose reeds over candles for welcome hampers.
Which lasts longer in a welcome hamper, a reed or a candle?
A reed diffuser scents a room passively for roughly six to eight weeks from a 50ml bottle, working continuously without being lit. A welcome-hamper candle is usually small and burns down in a handful of sittings. For lasting scent and keepsake value, the reed lasts far longer and keeps working after the guest goes home.
