We make candles and we make reed diffusers, and I am asked to declare a winner more often than anything else. There is no winner. A candle is an event and a diffuser is a condition, and which of those a household wants is a fact about the household rather than about the products. The households that light candles nightly are a real and identifiable minority, and they are the ones for whom our wax is the better gift by a distance.
The duo took the longest to describe honestly. It sells well at Diwali for the wrong reason — because it costs more — and the right reason is much narrower: two rooms, two bottles, a pair chosen so they do not argue where their air meets. I have watched one half of a duo sit unopened for a year in a one-room flat, and there is no version of that story where the gift did its job.
What I will not do is claim a format will make somebody feel a particular way. I have no way of knowing, and neither does anybody selling you a gift. What I can tell you is what each shape asks of the person who receives it, how long it lasts, what it needs from their home, and where it fails. When is a duo worth the extra money over a single bottle?
