The honest advice for a brand-new store is to trade unscented for its first weeks, and this page says so before it sells anything Waterless, so the machine adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces Made in India · independent, not affiliated with any hotel · a portion funds girl-child education

Nearly every retailer who writes to me about this has just spent a great deal of money on a beautiful room and is horrified that it smells of a workshop. It does, it will for a while, and the single worst thing you can do about it is the thing your opening schedule is pushing you towards.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my new watch store smell like this? Because a fit-out is a chemistry set that is still finishing. Adhesives, paints, lacquers, sealants, engineered board, carpet backing, foam and fresh packaging all release at their highest rate in the first days after installation and then taper away over weeks. That is what you are smelling: a room that has not finished curing. It is not a shortage of fragrance, it is not a defect in your joinery, and it is not something a supplier can shorten by selling you anything.

How long does it take to go? Longer than an opening schedule wants and shorter than it feels. The heaviest phase is usually the first week or two, and it keeps tapering after that, with the last of it coming from the slowest items - thick lacquer, dense board, the backing under a new carpet, foam inside seating. Air is the only thing that shortens it: doors open before and after trading, the AC running long hours, a second opening used wherever the store has one. Nothing you buy changes the calendar.

Should I switch the diffuser on to get through the opening? No, and this is the mistake I most want to talk retailers out of. A fragrance placed over a curing fit-out gives you two smells rather than one, the combination reads worse than either, and your team learns in week one that the machine is there for a reason they can smell. Fragrance is never used to deal with another smell. Trade unscented for the first weeks - it costs ₹0 - and buy a Vaayu at ₹11,999 or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 afterwards.
The short answer
Short answer: it is adhesive, lacquer, sealant, engineered board, carpet backing and foam finishing their curing, and it fades over weeks with air rather than with fragrance. Ventilate hard before and after trading, air out packaging and joinery, and trade unscented for the first weeks. Scenting over a fit-out is the commonest opening-week mistake in retail and it produces two smells rather than one.
The pick: nothing at all for now - trade unscented and spend ₹0 until the room smells of nothing in particular. When it does, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on a trading-hours timer, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) if the boutique is a single room.
Next step: tell us your handover date, your opening date and what the joinery and flooring are made of, and we will tell you roughly when it is worth having the scenting conversation at all - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Straight answer
My watch store smells like new furniture and carpentry - how do I fix it?
You ventilate it out, and you wait. A newly fitted store is full of materials that are still finishing: adhesives under the flooring, lacquers and paints on the joinery, sealants at every junction, engineered board in the cases and counters, the backing on a new carpet, the foam inside new seating, and the cardboard and film everything arrived wrapped in. All of those release at their highest rate in the first days and then taper away over weeks, which means what you are smelling is a room that has not finished, not a room that is missing something. The only thing that meaningfully shortens the process is moving air across it, so that is where the work goes: doors and shutters open before and after trading rather than only during it, the air conditioning running for long stretches rather than being switched on at ten and off at nine, a back-of-house door or any openable window used while the store is empty, and every carton, wrapping and protective film taken off site rather than stacked in a corner where it keeps releasing. If joinery or seating can be aired somewhere else before installation, that is worth arranging with the contractor, and if you are still at specification stage it is worth asking them what low-emission finishes and boards they can offer, because that is a fit-out decision and it belongs to them rather than to me. Then the part that matters most, and the reason this page exists. Do not switch a diffuser on to get through the opening. I understand exactly why it is tempting - the launch date is fixed, the photographs are booked, the room smells of a workshop and there is a machine sitting in a box. But a fragrance laid over a curing fit-out does not replace that smell, it accompanies it, and two smells sharing one room read worse than either one alone. Worse, your team learns in their first week that the fragrance is there for a reason they can identify, which is precisely the opposite of what a considered store wants. Fragrance is never used to deal with another smell, and it is never a substitute for cleaning or ventilation. The honest instruction is the unglamorous one: trade unscented for the first weeks. Nobody has ever walked out of a new boutique because it smelled of nothing. So the total on this page today is ₹0, and I would rather you kept the money until it can buy something that works. When the room does settle - and you will know, because the person who opens up stops mentioning it and a visitor walking in from the street notices nothing in particular - the scenting question becomes a normal one, on trading-hours timers at a level your floor team is comfortable with. That is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a trading floor past about 1,500 sq ft, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a single room. Ask for a retail scenting plan when the fit-out has gone quiet, not before.
It is the fit-out curing, not a missing fragrance. Ventilate hard, get the packaging off site, and trade unscented for the first weeks. Today's honest total is ₹0. Buy the machine when the room smells of nothing.
When the room has finally settled, the machine is one SOSA Vaayu - waterless, under 38dB, rated to 1000m³, with trading-hour timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999. Under 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead. Neither is an opening-week purchase, and I would rather you bought it in month two.

The machine, weeks later

This section is for month two, not for opening week. If your handover was last Tuesday, the honest answer is that nothing on this page will help you yet. The images link to the product pages so you can check the specifications when the time comes.

SOSA Vaayu
Trading floors past about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Wall or HVAC mountable, which is worth planning into a fit-out even when the machine itself is bought months afterwards.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
A single-room boutique under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. For a one-room new boutique this is the honest buy once the fit-out has settled, and a Vaayu would be six times the price for a fraction of its rated coverage.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The machine to plan for at fit-out and buy weeks after it
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three things to do in the first fortnight

Three actions, in this order, and not one of them is a purchase. The first two do most of the work and the third is the one people get wrong.

1
Run the building beyond your trading hours
Air is the only variable that shortens a curing calendar
For the first fortnight, treat ventilation as a task rather than a by-product of being open. Doors and shutters up well before trading and left open for a stretch after close where security allows, the air conditioning running for long periods rather than the eight hours you sell in, and any back-of-house door, service door or openable window used whenever the store is empty. A room that is only aired while customers are in it is being aired for the smallest part of the day. Nothing you can buy shortens this and nothing sprayed into it shortens it either - the materials release at the rate they release, and your only lever is how often that air is replaced.
Tip: Ask the fit-out contractor to leave the store running with doors open over a weekend before you take stock in.

Nothing to buy at this stage

2
Get the packaging out of the building
Half of a new store's smell arrived in cardboard and film
Every case, plinth, chair and display prop arrives wrapped, and the wrapping is often stacked in a corner of the stockroom for weeks because nobody has time. Cartons, foam sheet, protective film, fresh MDF offcuts and the pallets they came on all keep releasing, and they are the easiest part of the problem to remove because you simply take them away. Do the same with any joinery that can be aired off site before installation, and unwrap new seating a few days before it goes onto the floor rather than the morning of the opening. This is the cheapest half-day of work in the whole process and it visibly moves the needle in stores where the stockroom has become a store cupboard for the fit-out.
Tip: Walk the stockroom with fresh nose on a Monday. It is usually louder than the trading floor.

3
Trade unscented, and say so to your team
Switching on at handover is the commonest opening-week mistake in retail
The pressure to have everything perfect for a launch is exactly what makes this mistake so common, and it is worth naming out loud so that whoever is pushing for it hears the reason. A fragrance over a curing fit-out gives you two smells sharing one room, and the combination reads worse than either. It also teaches a brand-new team that the machine exists because of a problem, which is a habit that outlives the fit-out by years. Tell the floor manager plainly that the store trades unscented until the room settles, and put a date in the calendar four to six weeks out to reassess rather than leaving it to whoever remembers. On a Vaayu at ₹11,999 the timers and key-lock make that restart deliberate rather than accidental.
Tip: If the machine is already on site, leave it boxed. A machine in a box is not a temptation; a machine on a plinth is.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
A new store does not have a fragrance problem. It has a curing problem with a calendar, and the only thing that shortens the calendar is moving air.
The launch date is the reason this goes wrong. A room is ready when it is ready, and no opening schedule has ever persuaded a lacquer to finish early.
SOSA Vaayu
For month two, not week one: SOSA Vaayu runs 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a key-lock, so the restart after a fit-out is a decision rather than an accident. ₹11,999.

The opening-weeks plan

Pin this next to the handover checklist. Everything above the last row is free, and the last row is deliberately dated weeks out.

The SOSA plan
A new fit-out, week by week, and what to do in each
The stage What to do
Before handover
Ask the contractor about low-emission finishes and boards, and whether joinery can be aired off site. A fit-out specification question, theirs rather than mine.
Handover week
Doors open, AC running long hours, store empty and breathing. Do not take delivery of soft furnishings you could air elsewhere first.
First fortnight
All cartons, film, foam and offcuts off site. Ventilate before and after trading, not only during it. Trading unscented, deliberately.
Weeks three to six
Keep airing. Ask whoever opens up each morning whether it is fading. That is your measurement, not your own nose.
SOSA VaayuWhen the room smells of nothing
Only now is scenting a normal decision, on trading-hours timers at a level the floor team sets.
If it has not faded at all
Stop and look for a specific source - a sealant that never cured, damp under a new floor, a trapped void. That is a contractor call, not a fragrance one.

If the store has soft furnishings, they are the part of the fit-out that holds this longest and releases it slowest, which is set out in how to deal with carpet and upholstery smells in a luxury watch boutique. And if you are still in the planning stage rather than the aftermath, the same argument sits inside the wider opening decision in whether scenting should be included in the interior plan for a new boutique. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Waterless by design: SOSA Vaayu adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your stock. ₹11,999.
Plan it now, buy it in month two
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ - worth a socket and a mounting position at fit-out, and worth leaving boxed until the room settles.

The proudest week of a retailer's year is the worst possible week to switch on a diffuser, and the schedule is the only reason anybody does it.

The SOSA specification, when the time comes

Two machines cover almost every watch boutique in the country, and which one you need is decided by floor size and air path rather than by how new the store is. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Buy nothing until the fit-out has gone quiet, and expect that to take weeks rather than days. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or case layout; it is never used to deal with another smell and it is never a substitute for ventilation or for finishing the building properly. Fresh-air intake and filtration belong to your HVAC contractor, and finishes and boards belong to your fit-out contractor. And no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell or spend. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

This one arrives in a particular tone - somewhere between panic and disappointment - usually about ten days before an opening. A great deal of money has gone into a room, the room smells of a workshop, and somebody has suggested that a scent machine will sort it out by Friday. It will not, and I would rather lose the sale than take it in that week, because a machine bought under those conditions gets blamed for a problem it was never able to solve.

What is actually happening is ordinary and finite. Adhesives, lacquers, sealants, engineered boards, carpet backing and new foam all release most heavily when they are newest and then taper off over weeks. Air is the only lever. Run the building beyond your trading hours, get every carton and sheet of film off the premises, air the seating before it comes in, and then let the calendar do the rest. If it genuinely has not faded at all after several weeks, stop treating it as a curing smell and go looking for a specific source - a sealant that never set, damp under a new floor, a void that got closed up wet. That is a conversation with your contractor.

When the room does settle, the scenting decision is a good one and I will happily have it with you. Under 750 sq ft it is a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Past about 1,500 sq ft it is a Vaayu at ₹11,999, on trading-hour timers, at a level your floor team calls comfortable, behind a key-lock. Until then the correct spend is nothing at all. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

My watch store smells like new furniture and carpentry - how do I fix it?
By ventilating and waiting. Adhesives, lacquers, sealants, engineered board, carpet backing and new foam all release most heavily when they are newest and taper over weeks. Run doors and air conditioning beyond your trading hours, get every carton, film and offcut off the premises, and air seating before it goes onto the floor. Moving air is the only thing that shortens the process, and nothing you buy changes the calendar.
Can I use a scent machine to get through my opening week?
No, and this is the mistake I most want to talk retailers out of. A fragrance over a curing fit-out does not replace that smell, it accompanies it, and two smells in one room read worse than either alone. It also teaches a brand-new team that the machine is there because of a problem they can identify. Fragrance is never used to deal with another smell. Trade unscented for the first weeks and switch on afterwards.
How long does new fit-out smell take to fade in a retail store?
Weeks rather than days, with the heaviest phase in roughly the first fortnight and a long taper after it. The slowest contributors are usually thick lacquer, dense board, carpet backing and foam inside new seating. The honest test is not your own nose, which adapts within about twenty minutes, but whoever opens up each morning: when they stop mentioning it, and a visitor walking in from the street notices nothing in particular, the room has settled.
What does it cost to fix a new-fit-out smell?
Nothing. Every effective action here is free or already inside the contractor's scope: running the building beyond trading hours, removing packaging, airing joinery and seating, and waiting. If you want the store scented after it has settled, that is Rs 1,899 for a single room or Rs 11,999 for a larger trading floor, and the point of this page is that neither of those is an opening-week purchase.
Should scenting be planned into the fit-out drawings at all?
The provision should be, even though the machine should not be switched on for weeks. A socket in the right place, a mounting position relative to the air-conditioning supply, and a note that the unit must not sit at the door are three lines on a services drawing that cost nothing at design stage and are awkward to retrofit later. Buying the machine and running it are separate decisions that belong well after handover.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference.
