Almost every showroom owner who writes to me about central air conditioning describes it as a problem to be worked around. It is the opposite of a problem. It is a machine that already moves every cubic metre of air in your building on a schedule, and the only question is where in that circuit you stand.
Quick answers — read this first
Where do I put the machine if the showroom has central AC? On the supply side of the air - a couple of metres downstream of a grille that blows, roughly a metre off the floor, out of the direct blast but inside the stream it makes. The one position to refuse is anywhere near a return grille, because a return is a grille that removes air from the room and it will remove your fragrance with it before the showroom has had any. Freestanding is enough for most single-floor showrooms.

Should I mount it into the ductwork instead? You can - the SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable - but that is an installation your HVAC contractor performs, not a decision I can make for you. Duct penetration, static pressure, where the fresh-air intake sits and what is in the filter train are all engineering questions belonging to whoever commissioned your system. Be wary of any fragrance supplier who answers them confidently.

What does it cost, and do I need this at all? One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, which covers up to 1000m³ - roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling. If your showroom is under about 750 sq ft, a Vaayu would be the wrong buy and the honest answer is one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, central AC or not. Total hardware spend at showroom scale: ₹11,999, one machine.
The short answer
Short answer: on the supply side of the air, a couple of metres downstream of a grille that blows and roughly a metre off the floor - and decisively away from any return grille, which removes air from the room and will remove the fragrance with it. Mounting into the ductwork is possible and is your HVAC contractor's install, not a fragrance supplier's advice. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), freestanding on the supply path for most showrooms and HVAC mounted only where a contractor specifies it; under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) instead.
Next step: send the floor plan with every supply grille and every return grille marked, and we will tell you which two or three positions are worth trying first - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Central air conditioning gives you something a naturally ventilated showroom cannot: a predictable, repeating air path. Find where it enters and where it leaves, and the placement decides itself.

Straight answer
Where should the scent machine go in a kitchen showroom with central air conditioning?
On the supply side of the air, and decisively away from the returns. That is the whole answer, and the reasoning behind it is worth more than the instruction. A central system does two things in every room it serves: it pushes conditioned air in through supply grilles or diffusers, and it draws air back out through return grilles so it can be cooled and pushed round again. Those two grille types often look almost identical from six feet below, which is why so many showrooms end up with a machine parked under a return, quietly feeding the plant room. A supply grille distributes whatever you put in front of it; a return grille deletes it. So the freestanding install, which is the right one for the large majority of single-floor showrooms, is this: the machine roughly a metre off the floor, two or three metres downstream of a supply diffuser, inside the stream of air it makes but not in the direct blast, and as far from a return as the room sensibly allows. It should not sit at the entrance, where a glass door keeps swapping your air for the street's, and it should not sit inside a display kitchen, where it becomes a prop. Then the second install, which people ask about more than they need it. The SOSA Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable, so it can be fitted into the air handling rather than stood in the room - and where a building has one central system serving an entrance, a display floor and a consultation room, that is genuinely the neatest distribution you can get. But I will not tell you how to do it, because it is not my trade. Duct penetration, static pressure, where the fresh-air intake sits, what grade of filter the return train carries and whether any of that changes when something is introduced upstream are questions for the HVAC contractor who commissioned your system. Ask them, get it in writing, and treat any fragrance supplier who answers those questions off the top of their head as someone who has not understood which trade they are in. Two honest cautions before the money. Central AC does not make an over-scented showroom acceptable - it distributes the level you chose, so if the level is wrong it is now evenly wrong, and the level is still judged from the consultation seat at minute ninety by the designers who breathe it all week. And none of this is a way to cover a smell: if the showroom smells of laminate, adhesive or last week's cooking demonstration, fragrance never covers it, and the money goes to ventilation, extraction and cleaning first. On hardware: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, covering up to 1000m³, on the app timer through trading hours, key-locked. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest buy and the Vaayu is the wrong one. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries or order value, and a supplier who quotes you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the plan with the grilles marked.
Supply side yes, return grille never. Freestanding a metre up and downstream of a diffuser suits most showrooms; duct mounting is your HVAC contractor's install and their engineering call. One Vaayu ₹11,999 up to 1000m³, or a ₹1,899 Sukoon under 750 sq ft.
One SOSA Vaayu - waterless, rated to 1000m³, freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, with 1h/4h/8h/24h app timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999. It is the same machine either way, which is why you can start it freestanding and move it into the ductwork later if a contractor recommends that.

The machine, and which install it needs

One machine, two possible installs, and the honest note that most conditioned showrooms never need the second one. The images link to the product pages so you can check the specifications before ordering anything.

Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, so it suits a room install now and a duct install later if your contractor advises one.

SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. A small conditioned studio has the same supply-and-return logic and a much smaller volume of air, and at this size a Vaayu is six times the price for a fraction of what it is rated to do.

SOSA Vaayu
The machine that suits both a room install and a duct install
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA. Installation and mounting support are not published; confirm with SOSA.

The three things to establish before you place it

Twenty minutes with a tissue and a floor plan will tell you more than any amount of guessing about strength. Do these three in order.

1
Map the grilles
Find out which ones blow and which ones pull, and mark them
Take the floor plan and walk the showroom with the system running. Hold a light tissue under every ceiling grille in turn. Where it lifts away, that is supply - air entering the room. Where it is drawn flat against the grille, that is a return - air leaving. Mark both on the plan in different colours, because from the floor they can look the same and the difference decides your placement completely. Do this once and you own the map for as long as you are in the building. Most showrooms have far fewer returns than supplies, which is helpful, because it means there are only two or three positions you actually have to avoid.
Tip: Do the tissue walk when the system has been running twenty minutes, not from a cold start.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Decide freestanding or ducted
For most single-floor showrooms, freestanding is the correct answer
A ducted install sounds more professional and it is not automatically better. It is right when one central system genuinely serves separated spaces you cannot otherwise reach - an entrance, a display floor and a closed consultation room on the same handler - and it is unnecessary when the showroom is one open volume with a clear supply path. Start freestanding. It costs you nothing beyond the machine, it can be moved in ten seconds while you learn the building, and if you later want it in the air handling, the same Vaayu is wall and HVAC mountable. Mounting and installation support are not published as a service, so confirm what is available with SOSA before you plan around it.
Tip: A machine you can move is a machine you can learn from. Fix its position last, not first.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

3
Hand the engineering over
Pressure, intake, ductwork and filtration are not a fragrance question
This is the part of the conversation I stop at, deliberately. Static pressure in the supply duct, where the fresh-air intake is drawn from and at what proportion, the grade and condition of the filters, whether a penetration is permissible in your duct run, and how any of that interacts with an appliance introduced upstream - all of it belongs to your HVAC contractor or consulting engineer. They designed or commissioned the system and they carry the responsibility for it. I can tell you where a machine sits in a room; I cannot tell you what belongs inside your ductwork. Get their answer in writing before anybody drills anything, and be sceptical of a scenting supplier who is happy to advise on all of it.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu is HVAC mountable - the mounting decision is still your engineer's.
See SOSA Vaayu →
The SOSA principle
Central air conditioning is the only distribution system in your showroom that was designed by somebody qualified, and the scenting job is to feed it in the right place rather than to compete with it from the wrong one.
Which is why the useful twenty minutes are spent with a tissue under the grilles, not with the intensity dial.
SOSA Vaayu
Both installs, one machine: SOSA Vaayu is freestanding or wall and HVAC mountable, so the same unit suits a room today and a duct tomorrow. ₹11,999.

The placement plan, grille by grille

Take this round the showroom with the plan in your hand and the system running.

The SOSA plan
Where the machine goes in a centrally conditioned kitchen showroom
The area What to do
SOSA VaayuTwo or three metres downstream of a supply grille
The default position. Inside the stream but not in the blast, roughly a metre off the floor, on the display floor rather than at the door.
Directly under a supply diffuser
Too close. The output is thrown hard in one direction and the room gets a strong line rather than a gradient. Step back a couple of metres.
Anywhere near a return grille
Never. A return removes air from the room and takes the fragrance with it before the showroom has had any of it. This is the single commonest placement mistake in a conditioned building.
Inside the air handling
Possible - the Vaayu is HVAC mountable - and entirely your HVAC contractor's install and engineering judgement. Ductwork, pressure, intake and filtration are their call, not mine.
At the entrance
No. A glass door exchanges that air constantly, so a machine there scents the pavement and under-scents the floor.
Inside a display kitchen
No. It becomes a prop, it is handled by customers, and it sits inside a cabinet where the air does not move.

If you are not sure which of your ceiling grilles is which, the tissue test and the reasoning behind it are set out in full in why showroom fragrance seems to disappear when the AC is running, which also covers the second, quieter reason conditioned air changes how a setting reads. And the whole family's method for getting a showroom to read evenly is in how to create even fragrance distribution across multiple display zones. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Waterless by design: It adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your finishes. ₹11,999.
One machine, on the right side of the air
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ and mounts freestanding, on a wall or into HVAC.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
I have seen more scenting money wasted on a machine parked politely under a return grille than on any fragrance choice anybody ever made. The plant room got a beautiful showroom.

The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification

Two machines cover most kitchen showrooms, with the Aangan taking over where the building has real air handling and real scale. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you plan a rollout. Installation, mounting support, warranty and AMC terms are not published - confirm them with SOSA. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Place on the supply side, stay away from the returns, and set the level from the consultation seat at minute ninety rather than from the doorway. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to cover another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and ductwork, static pressure, fresh-air intake and filtration are your HVAC contractor's questions, not a fragrance supplier's. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries or order value. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The question I get is almost always phrased as a worry: we have central AC, will that be a problem? And I understand why - people imagine the system as something that will blow their fragrance away. What it actually is, is the only piece of equipment in the building that reliably moves air from one end of the showroom to the other on a schedule, every trading day, whether anybody thinks about it or not. You are not fighting it. You are deciding where in its circuit to stand.

The whole of the answer is that air enters somewhere and leaves somewhere else, and you want to be near the entering and far from the leaving. Twenty minutes with a tissue tells you which ceiling grille is which, and once you have marked them on the plan you never have to guess again. Almost every conditioned showroom I have talked through has had one obvious right position and two obvious wrong ones, and the wrong ones were both under returns.

Where I stop is at the duct. The Vaayu is HVAC mountable and for some buildings that is the neatest install there is, but pressure, intake, ductwork and filtration belong to your HVAC contractor and I would rather say so than pretend. On hardware, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a showroom floor, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft, and an Aangan at ₹25,999 once the building is genuinely large. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

My kitchen showroom has central AC - where should I place the scent machine?
On the supply side of the air: two or three metres downstream of a grille that blows, about a metre off the floor, on the display floor rather than at the entrance. Keep it well away from any return grille, because a return removes air from the room and will take the fragrance with it. Hold a tissue under each ceiling grille to tell supply from return before you decide anything.
Should the machine be mounted inside the ductwork?
It can be - the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is wall and HVAC mountable - but that is an installation your HVAC contractor carries out and specifies. Duct penetration, static pressure, fresh-air intake and filtration are engineering questions belonging to whoever designed or commissioned your system. Most single-floor showrooms never need a ducted install at all, and a freestanding machine on the supply path does the same job.
How do I tell a supply grille from a return grille?
Hold a light tissue up to each one with the system running for twenty minutes. If the tissue lifts away from the grille, air is entering the room and that is a supply. If the tissue is pulled flat against it, air is leaving and that is a return. Mark both on your floor plan. Most showrooms have several supplies and only one or two returns, so there are only a couple of positions you have to avoid.
Will central AC make the fragrance too strong or too weak?
It changes where the fragrance goes rather than how much of it there is. Conditioned air is also drier, which can make the same setting read sharper than it did in an unconditioned room. Set the level from the consultation seat at the ninetieth minute and ask the designers who breathe it all week, then leave it alone. You cannot judge it yourself after twenty minutes on the floor because your nose adapts.
Does running the machine through the AC help with the smell of new cabinetry?
No. Fragrance never covers another smell in any distribution system - two smells in one airspace combine rather than cancel, so you would get laminate and fragrance instead of laminate. Off-gassing from MDF, adhesive and new joinery is a curing problem solved by ventilation and time. Trade unscented until it has gone, and spend the money on air change rather than on a machine.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
