Ask him to line the bottles up and tell you what is different about each one. Most people who own five woody fragrances can name the label on all five and the difference between none of them, and that is not a failure of memory. It is what happens when every bottle is built on the same accord and sold on a different story. The useful question is not which sixth bottle to add. It is which material is repeating.
Quick answers — read this first
Why do several different woody perfumes smell the same? Because they usually share a base. Most modern woody fragrances are built on a small set of materials - a synthetic cedar-amber, a sandalwood accord, oud - and the difference between them sits in the top few minutes rather than in the hour after. Bottles that share a base will converge on the skin whatever the boxes say.

Does the SOSA three-attar set give three different woody interpretations? It gives three different accents over one base. Ameeri is Taif rose and Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron over soft oudh; Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, the driest of the three; Mastani is night-blooming jasmine and damask rose over oudh. Oudh and sandalwood run through all three, so this is variation rather than contrast - ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles.

Is a small set better than one more large bottle? For somebody who already owns several similar bottles, yes, and for a practical reason rather than a romantic one. He does not need more volume of a register he already has litres of. Three 3ML bottles let him find out which accent he actually reaches for before anybody spends ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 on a 12ML of it.
The short answer
Short answer: Bottles that smell alike share a base, so the thing to change is the accent sitting on top of it - and the fixed set is three accents over one base, which is variation rather than contrast.
The pick: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles - rose-led, dry oud-led and jasmine-led readings of the same woody base, which is honestly what it is.
Honest note: the set is fixed and all three scents sit in one register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Adaa, the one bright scent, is not in it.
The trio, and the alternative - at a glanceThe trio is one register: rose, oud, sandalwood. Three eveningsFixed set ₹1,055 · Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani · Adaa not includedWant contrast? Three chosen 3ML from ₹1,153 - three boxesAlcohol-free oil · worn at the wrist
SOSA's three-attar set is a fixed pairing of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani at Rs 1,055 for three 3ML bottles. All three sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals, built for evenings. If what you want is contrast rather than depth, the route is three 3ML singles chosen yourself, from Rs 1,153, which is the only way to include Adaa, the one bright scent in the range. Those arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set.
Straight answer
Can a three-attar set give a woods wearer genuinely different interpretations?
Different interpretations, yes. Different directions, no, and the gap between those two words is the whole answer.

The direct answer: the three-attar set at ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles. Ameeri reads rose-first: Taif rose and Indian sandalwood with Persian saffron, soft oudh underneath. Nawaab reads dry and mineral: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, the least sweet thing we make. Mastani reads floral and dark: night-blooming jasmine and damask rose sitting on oudh.

Now the part most sets will not tell you. Oudh runs through all three. So does sandalwood, in two of them. What changes between the bottles is the accent on top, not the ground underneath. If his complaint is that his bottles all share a base, a set built on one base is an honest answer only if he enjoys that base - and a woods wearer generally does. If his complaint is that he wants to smell like a different kind of person on different days, this set will not do it, and I would rather say that here.

Why not another large bottle. He has volume. What he does not have is evidence about which accent he reaches for on a Thursday. Three 3ML bottles produce that evidence in about a month, and a 12ML at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 becomes a decision rather than a bet.

The one that is not in the box. Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk - is the one bright scent we make and it is not part of the set. At 6ML the same three are ₹1,859. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: bottles that smell alike are sharing a base, so buy something that changes the accent over that base and buy it small enough that being wrong is cheap.
The three-attar set is ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles, ₹1,859 at 6ML. It is a fixed pairing - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - and all three sit in the same register, so it is depth rather than contrast. Worth knowing before you order: Adaa is not in it.

Why several woody bottles end up smelling like one

Three things explain why a shelf of woody fragrances collapses into one smell, and only the first of them is about the perfumes.

1
The shared base
Five bottles, one accord underneath
Woody fragrance is a narrow industrial palette. A handful of cedar-amber and sandalwood materials carry most of the category, and houses differentiate in the opening rather than in the base, because the opening is what sells in a shop. Twenty minutes later the bottles converge. So the audit is simple: ask him what is different about each one. If he can only answer with brand names, the repetition is in the base, and the accent is the only thing left to change. That is exactly the axis the set moves along - rose, dry saffron, night jasmine, over the same oudh and sandalwood.
Tip: If he cannot name the difference between his own bottles, the difference is not there.
2
What the set varies, honestly
Three accents, one register
Worth stating plainly because the category trades on the opposite. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani share oudh; two of the three share Indian or Mysore sandalwood; two are led by rose. They are three evenings, not three fragrance families, and the set is a depth set. For a man whose objection is that woods bore him, this is not the fix. For one whose objection is that his bottles are interchangeable within a register he genuinely loves, it is, because the accents really do separate on skin.
3
Size
Buy the size that matches the confidence you have
He owns several bottles he has not finished. Adding a sixth large one is buying more of an unanswered question. Three 3ML bottles at ₹1,055 is the size that tests an idea rather than commits to it, and the 10 per cent saving against three singles is real. If the test comes back clearly - and with three this distinct it usually does - the single he picked at 12ML is the follow-up, and that one gets finished.
Tip: Volume is not variety. He already has the first one.
The SOSA principle
Bottles that smell alike are not a memory problem. They are a base problem.
Change the accent sitting on top of that base and three bottles separate. Change nothing and a sixth purchase joins the same blur as the first five.

Changing the accent over a base that stays put

Work out which part of his shelf is repeating, then buy against that part rather than against the category.

The SOSA attar edit
What to buy for a shelf of similar woody bottles
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
He loves the woody register and just wants it varied The three-attar set at ₹1,055. Three accents over one base, in a size that settles the argument.
He wants the driest possible reading of woods Nawaab alone - ₹399 at 3ML, ₹699 at 6ML. White royal oud and Mysore sandalwood, the least sweet thing in the range.
He is bored of the register itself, not the bottles Not this set, which is the register. Three 3ML singles chosen yourself, ₹1,153 to ₹1,173 - the only route with Adaa in it.
You already know which accent he wants One 12ML at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199. The size somebody finishes, bought once the guessing is over.

If what he is really saying is that another oud would be a lazy present, Another oud feels lazy separates that complaint from the question of what he will actually wear. And if you cannot yet name which kind of woods he leans towards, Which kind of woods is the better starting point. The set and the four attars are both here.

The SOSA attar edit

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist, hand-blended in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by what you actually know about the person's taste, which is what decides whether a fixed set or three chosen bottles is the right answer.

The SOSA attar edit
Five answers by what you actually know about their taste - from ₹1,055 to ₹1,859
Option Best for What it is, honestly From
The three-attar set, 3ML x 3 They already wear rose, oud or big florals Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani - one register, three evenings. Fixed: Adaa is not in it ₹1,055
Three chosen 3ML singles You want contrast, not depth Any three of the four, chosen by you. The only route that includes Adaa. Three boxes, not one set ₹1,153
One 12ML of a scent you are sure of You know exactly what they wear A size they finish rather than sample, when guessing is not required ₹1,149
The three-attar set, 6ML x 3 The same three, in a size that lasts Where the trio is right and 3ML would run out too quickly ₹1,859
Solid perfume tin 15g When a roll-on is not right Solid balm in a metal tin - nothing to spill, nothing to leak in a bag ₹500

Four honest notes. The three-attar set is fixed - Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, in one size tier at a time. Adaa, the bergamot and cardamom one, is not in it, so if the brighter style is what the person wears, that means buying Adaa separately. All three trio scents sit in the same register - rose, oud, sandalwood and heavy florals - so the set is depth rather than contrast; if contrast is the point, choose three 3ML singles yourself and know that they arrive as three boxes rather than one gift set, because there is no build-your-own set on the store. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free oil worn at the wrist; the designer-inspired line is an alcohol-based spray and a different product entirely, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any fragrance house it names. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The hardest fragrance gift is not the one where you know nothing. It is the one where you know just enough. You can name the bottle they have worn for six years. You also know that buying it again is not a gift, it is a refill - and that buying something wildly different is a coin toss with your money on it.

So people reach for a set, and most fragrance sets quietly mislead. They are sold as exploration when they are really one house's single idea, broken into three bottles. I would rather tell you what ours actually is. Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani are three evenings, not three directions. Rose, oud, sandalwood, saffron, night jasmine. If the person you are buying for already lives in that register, the set is genuinely good and the discount is real. If they wear something bright and fresh, it is the wrong set, and no amount of my writing changes that.

The answer in that case is not a different set. It is three bottles you pick yourself - and yes, that costs about a hundred rupees more than the fixed three, and yes, they arrive in three boxes rather than one. I would rather you knew both of those things before you ordered than after. Adaa is the only bright one we make, and it is not in the set. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Why do all his woody fragrances smell similar?
Because they are built on similar materials. The woody category runs on a small palette of cedar-amber and sandalwood accords, and most houses differentiate in the first ten minutes rather than in the base. Bottles that share a base converge on skin, which is why a shelf of five can behave like a shelf of one.
Are the three attars in the set actually different from each other?
They are different accents over the same base, and that is the honest description. Ameeri is rose and sandalwood with saffron over soft oudh, Nawaab is white royal oud with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, Mastani is night jasmine and damask rose over oudh. Oudh is in all three. On skin they separate clearly, but they are three evenings rather than three families.
Is the set better value than buying the three bottles separately?
Yes, and the saving is genuine rather than invented. The set is ₹1,055 for three 3ML bottles. The same three bought individually come to ₹1,173, so the set saves about 10 per cent - and the three singles arrive as three separate boxes rather than one.
Should I buy a 12ML of one scent instead?
Only if you already know which one he wants. A 12ML is ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 and it is the size somebody finishes rather than samples. If you are still guessing between accents, three small bottles answer the question first and the large bottle becomes a decision afterwards.
What if he wants something genuinely outside woods?
Then this set is the wrong purchase and I would rather you knew now. Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk - is the only bright scent in the attar range, it is ₹379 at 3ML, and it is not included in the fixed set. Four attars in two registers is one perfumer's point of view, not a cross-family discovery kit.

SOSA attars, specified: alcohol-free concentrated fragrance oil in a roll-on bottle, applied at the wrist rather than sprayed. Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab share oudh, sandalwood and rose materials and sit in one register; Adaa is the outlier.
