This is one of the questions I'm asked most, and the honest answer has two halves. A reed is fine to leave out all night; an ultrasonic is happier on a timer than running till morning — and a bedroom, scented for the arrival into rest, rarely needs anything on for eight hours anyway. Here is how I'd set it up.
Quick answers
Reed diffuser? Safe to leave out overnight — no power, no mist, always low. The simplest option.

Ultrasonic (Boond/Sukoon)? Run it on a timer for an hour before bed, not all night. It adds humidity and the room doesn't need scent till morning.

Humid room? Avoid ultrasonic overnight; a reed or waterless Vaayu adds no moisture.
The short answer
Short answer: a passive reed is completely fine overnight; an ultrasonic is best run on a timer for an hour before bed and then off. Keep any bedroom scent low, and in a humid room skip the ultrasonic overnight altogether.
The pick: an Evening Calm reed to leave out; a Sukoon on its timer if you want a diffuser; a Vaayu for scheduled, waterless runs.

Reeds: leave them out, and relax

A reed diffuser is the easiest overnight answer because there is genuinely nothing to worry about. It uses no electricity, no heat and no mist — the fragrance simply travels up the reeds and into the air at a low, constant level. You can leave it out permanently, day and night, and it will never be strong, never overheat, and never add moisture. For a room you sleep and breathe in, that steady, unobtrusive presence is exactly right. An Evening Calm lavender-chamomile reed on the dresser is my default overnight recommendation for a bedroom.

Ultrasonic and waterless: use the timer

Overnight, by system
What I'd do with each
System Overnight verdict How to run it
Reed diffuser Fine to leave out — passive, low, no moisture Just leave it on the dresser; turn reeds occasionally
Boond / Sukoon (ultrasonic) Not all night — adds humidity; auto-off when water runs dry Timer, ~1 hour before bed, then off
Vaayu (waterless) Good — no water, no added humidity; app-scheduled Schedule a timed run in the evening, off before sleep

On safety specifically: the Boond and Sukoon shut off automatically when the water runs out, so leaving one on is not a fire hazard. The real reasons not to run an ultrasonic all night are gentler ones — it slowly raises the humidity in a closed room, and a bedroom simply doesn't need scent held for eight hours. Run it on the timer for an hour before bed, let the room hold that soft scent as you fall asleep, and let the machine switch itself off. If you want the scent to appear on a schedule with no water at all, the waterless Vaayu handles that through its app.

The SOSA principle
A bedroom scent should welcome you into rest and then recede — it does not need to work all night to do its job.
A reed does that passively and safely; an ultrasonic does it best in a short run before bed. Either way, low and brief beats strong and all-night in a room you're breathing in.

One honest caveat, and it matters: if anyone in the room has asthma, allergies or a strong scent sensitivity, or it's a shared room with a small child, keep the level very low and lean towards a passive reed run briefly, or none at all. Fragrance is a comfort, not a necessity — a clean, aired, well-made bed is doing most of the work, and the scent only crowns it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to run a diffuser in the bedroom overnight?
A passive reed is completely fine to leave out overnight — no power, no heat, no mist, always low. An ultrasonic is best on a timer for an hour before bed rather than all night, both because the room doesn't need it and because it adds humidity. Keep the level low whatever you use.
Can I leave an ultrasonic diffuser on all night?
Better not to. The Boond and Sukoon auto-switch-off when the water runs dry, so they aren't a fire risk, but running one all night adds steady humidity to a closed room and keeps scent going long after it's needed. Use the timer, then let it stop.
Do reed diffusers need switching off at night?
No. A reed is passive and safe to leave out permanently, day and night — nothing to switch off, no electricity, no water. The scent stays low and constant, which is exactly what suits a room you sleep in.
Is a diffuser safe overnight in a humid or coastal bedroom?
Avoid running an ultrasonic all night in a humid room — it mists water and adds to moisture that's already high. A passive reed adds none, and a waterless Vaayu nebulises oil with no water, so both suit overnight or long runs on the coast.
Should a bedroom scent be strong enough to smell all night?
No. Scent the room for the arrival into rest, not for performance — something you register on entering and then stop noticing, not one that stays obvious for eight hours. A low reed, or an ultrasonic run briefly before bed, gives that calm welcome.

Notes: SOSA ultrasonic diffusers auto-switch-off when the water runs dry; the main reasons to avoid running one all night are added humidity and unnecessary scent load, not fire risk. Reed diffusers are alcohol-free, passive and safe to leave out permanently; the waterless Vaayu adds no humidity. Anyone with asthma, allergies or scent sensitivity, or sharing a room with a small child, should keep levels very low or use none.
