I have Rs 1,000 and want a sophisticated attar for dinner dates: which musk, sandalwood or amber profiles should I shortlist?

SOSA Founder Diaries · Safar ownership

At ₹1,000 the whole 6ml row of the range is open to you, because the 6ml bottles run ₹669 to ₹699 and every one of the four fits. Two 3ml bottles fit as well. One of the four publishes date nights in its own occasion line, and your three note words sit in three different places.

By Sonal Sahani, founder and perfumer · 10 minute read · SOSA Home & Body, Pune

Published: the 6ml band Rs 669 to Rs 699, all four inside Rs 1,000. Mastani Rs 389 / Rs 685 / Rs 1,179, 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews, occasion line anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions, signature wear. White musk in three bases, sandalwood in three pyramids, amber in two. Not published: a projection figure.

Answer in brief

  • What does ₹1,000 buy? Any 6ml bottle in the range, because they run ₹669 to ₹699 and the dearest leaves ₹301 over. It also buys any two 3ml bottles, which come to between ₹764 and ₹788 depending on which two. It does not stretch to a 12ml attar bottle, which starts at ₹1,149.
  • Which one names dinner dates? Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. It is the only occasion line of the four that prints date nights. Mastani's published strength figure is 9.2, the sensual depth end of the range. The 6ml is ₹685. Mastani carries 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews.
  • Where do musk, sandalwood and amber actually sit? White musk is published in the bases of Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and not in Mastani. Sandalwood is published in Ameeri's heart, Nawaab's heart and Mastani's base. Amber is published in the bases of Ameeri and Nawaab only.

The short answer

Rs 1,000 is the 6ml band. All four 6ml bottles fit - Adaa Rs 669, Ameeri Rs 679, Mastani Rs 685 and Nawaab Rs 699 - and so do any two 3ml bottles, which come to between Rs 764 and Rs 788. For dinner dates the published answer is Mastani, whose occasion line reads anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear, at Rs 685 for 6ml with 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is Rs 55 over your budget.

The one thing that does not fit: the Pack of 3, which is ₹1,055 for the 3ml set and so sits ₹55 above your figure. Three separate 3ml bottles do not fit either; the cheapest three come to ₹1,153. Two 3ml attars or a single 6ml is where ₹1,000 actually lands.

  5. Questions people ask

I have Rs 1,000 and want a sophisticated attar for dinner dates. Which musk, sandalwood or amber profiles should I shortlist?

Your budget is the useful kind, because it opens a whole row of the range rather than a corner of it. The 6ml bottles are Adaa at ₹669, Ameeri at ₹679, Mastani at ₹685 and Nawaab at ₹699, so every one of the four is under ₹1,000 and the dearest of them leaves ₹301 over. There is a second shape your figure allows: any two 3ml bottles. The six possible pairs come to between ₹764 and ₹788, so two bottles of your choice are affordable in a way three are not - the cheapest three 3ml bottles come to ₹1,153. And one thing it does not reach: The Pack of 3 is ₹1,055 for the 3ml set, ₹1,859 for 6ml and ₹3,189 for 12ml, and it holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. Adaa is not in it. The 3ml set at ₹1,055 is ₹55 above your figure, which is the sort of detail better learned here than at checkout. Now the recommendation, which is published rather than guessed. Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. Date nights is printed on that product page, and it is the only one of the four occasion lines that prints it. Mastani publishes litchi, bergamot and pink pepper in its opening, night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose in its heart, and Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean in its base. Mastani's mood line reads sensual, romantic, never sweet, never sharp. Mastani's published strength figure is 9.2, the sensual depth end of the range. It is ₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml and ₹1,179 for 12ml. Mastani carries 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. Those are customer reviews Sonal collated over WhatsApp, which is why I quote the count beside the figure rather than the figure on its own. Mastani publishes its gender line as designed feminine sensual, unisex on confident skin. Now your three words, because each one sits in a different place and the differences are the whole shortlist. Musk first. White musk is published in the bases of Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and Mastani is the one pyramid of the four that does not publish it - which is worth knowing, because the bottle whose occasion line names your evening is the one that lacks the note you named. Sandalwood second, which moves between tiers. Ameeri publishes Indian sandalwood in its heart beside Taif rose, Nawaab publishes Mysore sandalwood in its heart beside white royal oud and aged tobacco leaf, and Mastani publishes Mysore sandalwood in its base beside oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean. Amber third, and it is the narrowest of the three: amber is published in the bases of Ameeri and Nawaab only, and in neither Adaa nor Mastani. Ameeri publishes Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot in its opening, Taif rose and Indian sandalwood in its heart, and soft oudh, amber and white musk in its base. Ameeri's mood line reads warm, festive, opulent, never theatrical. Ameeri's published strength figure is 9.0, the festive warm middle of the range. Ameeri is ₹679 for 6ml. Ameeri carries 4.9 from 104 published customer reviews. Nawaab publishes Kashmir saffron, black pepper and cardamom in its opening, white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and aged tobacco leaf in its heart, and amber, leather and white musk in its base. Nawaab's mood line reads regal, refined, long-wearing, never aggressive. Nawaab's published strength figure is 9.5, the deepest in the SOSA attar range. Nawaab is ₹699 for 6ml. Nawaab carries 4.9 from 86 published customer reviews. One caution before you spend, stated plainly because it is the single most useful line on this page for a reader who dislikes sweetness. Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean are published in Mastani's base and in no other pyramid in this range, so a reader who dislikes sweetness can rule one bottle out on published words and keep the other three. The strength figures are SOSA's own self-assigned scores out of ten, on a scale SOSA invented and nobody else uses: Adaa 8.5, Ameeri 9.0, Mastani 9.2 and Nawaab 9.5. All four publish the same wear time, 6 to 8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and nothing beyond that figure is published. SOSA publishes no projection figure and no sillage figure for any attar, so no page of mine will turn a strength figure into a distance. All four are the same format: a concentrated oil attar with a built-in dab applicator, carried in sandalwood oil and jojoba, alcohol-free and DPG-free. Sonal Sahani trained at ISIPCA, Versailles, she designs all four attars herself, and she signs off every small batch by hand in Pune. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

In one line: Rs 1,000 is the 6ml band, Rs 669 to Rs 699, and all four fit. Mastani 6ml Rs 685 is the one whose occasion line names date nights, with 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 does not fit.

What the budget opens, and where your three notes sit

One of these is arithmetic, one is an occasion line and one is a map of three words across four pyramids. Take them in that order.

1

The band - Rs 1,000 is the whole 6ml row

The 6ml bottles are Adaa at ₹669, Ameeri at ₹679, Mastani at ₹685 and Nawaab at ₹699, so all four sit under ₹1,000 and your figure clears the dearest of them with ₹301 to spare. Two 3ml bottles fit as well, at between ₹764 and ₹788 for the pair. Three do not: the cheapest three 3ml bottles come to ₹1,153. The Pack of 3 is ₹1,055 for the 3ml set, ₹1,859 for 6ml and ₹3,189 for 12ml, and it holds Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani. Adaa is not in it. At ₹1,055 the 3ml set is ₹55 over your budget, so it is outside this page.

Four 6ml attars between ₹669 and ₹699, all under ₹1,000.

2

The occasion line - date nights, printed on one page

Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. Adaa publishes its occasion line as office hours, business lunches, daytime weddings, meetings and summer wear. Ameeri publishes its occasion line as Diwali, Eid, Karwa Chauth, family weddings and festive dinners. Nawaab publishes its occasion line as weddings, boardrooms, important evenings and signature wear. Only the first prints date nights, and only Mastani and Nawaab print the evening at all. It is ₹685 for 6ml. Mastani carries 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. Read its base before you buy: Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean, which is the tier a reader who dislikes sweetness needs to see.

3

Your three words - musk, sandalwood and amber, mapped

White musk is published in the bases of Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and not in Mastani. Sandalwood is published three times in two different tiers: Ameeri's heart, Nawaab's heart and Mastani's base. Amber is the narrowest, published in Ameeri's base and Nawaab's base only. So the one bottle that carries two of your three words in one pyramid is Ameeri, whose base is soft oudh, amber and white musk and whose heart is Taif rose and Indian sandalwood. Ameeri's published strength figure is 9.0, the festive warm middle of the range. It is ₹679 for 6ml. Ameeri carries 4.9 from 104 published customer reviews.

Ameeri publishes musk, sandalwood and amber in two of its own tiers.

Your budget opens the whole 6ml row, and the bottle whose occasion line names your evening is the one pyramid of the four that does not publish white musk. Both of those are worth knowing before you spend.

Mastani's published pyramid, tier by tier

Mastani publishes its opening as litchi, bergamot and pink pepper, labelled a soft fruit lift. It publishes its heart as night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, labelled the long centre. It publishes its base as Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean. Mastani's mood line reads sensual, romantic, never sweet, never sharp. Mastani publishes its occasion line as anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear. Mastani publishes its gender line as designed feminine sensual, unisex on confident skin. Mastani's published strength figure is 9.2, the sensual depth end of the range. It is ₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml and ₹1,179 for 12ml. Mastani carries 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews. The carrier is Mysore sandalwood oil and jojoba, DPG-free, and the format is a concentrated oil attar with a built-in dab applicator.

Mastani 6ml is ₹685, which comes to ₹315 under ₹1,000, and the 3ml is ₹389 if you would rather try it first.

Your budget and your three words, against the record

What you are deciding What is actually published
Rs 1,000 The 6ml band is ₹669 to ₹699 and all four fit. Two 3ml bottles come to between ₹764 and ₹788. The 12ml band starts at ₹1,149 and the Pack of 3 is ₹1,055, so neither is inside your figure.
Dinner dates Published as an occasion line. Mastani prints anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear, and it is the only one of the four that prints date nights. 6ml ₹685.
Musk and amber White musk is published in the bases of Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and not in Mastani. Amber is published in the bases of Ameeri and Nawaab only. Ameeri's base carries both, with soft oudh, at ₹679 for 6ml.
Sandalwood Published three times across two tiers: Indian sandalwood in Ameeri's heart, Mysore sandalwood in Nawaab's heart and Mysore sandalwood in Mastani's base. There is no sandalwood attar as a product.

The two-bottle route deserves a paragraph of its own, because at this figure it is a real option rather than a consolation. Adaa at ₹379 plus Mastani at ₹389 comes to ₹768 for the pair, and that gives you the published daytime occasion line and the published date-night one in the same purchase. Ameeri at ₹385 plus Nawaab at ₹399 comes to ₹784 and gives you both the amber bases. The smallest published size is 3ml, on all four, and SOSA sells no travel size, no sample, no tester and no decant, so 3ml is where a trial starts. The trade is the per-millilitre one: two 3ml bottles are six millilitres for about ₹128 a millilitre, where a single 6ml is six millilitres for about ₹112 to ₹117 a millilitre depending on which. Two scents or more of one - that is the whole choice, and both are inside ₹1,000.

The bottle whose published occasion line names date nights is also the one pyramid of the four that does not publish white musk. Being straight about that is the service.

Four reads, for a Rs 1,000 evening brief

  1. Note the 6ml band first: Rs 669 to Rs 699, and all four are inside Rs 1,000.
  2. Read Mastani's occasion line. It is the only one that names date nights.
  3. Read its base for the vanilla and the tonka bean before you decide.
  4. Then choose: one 6ml, or two 3ml bottles at Rs 764 to Rs 788 for the pair.

Questions people ask

What can I buy for Rs 1,000?

Any 6ml bottle in the range: Adaa Rs 669, Ameeri Rs 679, Mastani Rs 685 or Nawaab Rs 699. You can also buy any two 3ml bottles, which come to between Rs 764 and Rs 788 for the pair. You cannot buy a 12ml, which starts at Rs 1,149, and you cannot buy the Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055.

Which attar names dinner dates?

Mastani. Its published occasion line reads anniversaries, date nights, evening receptions and signature wear, and it is the only one of the four that prints date nights. It is Rs 685 for 6ml with 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews and a self-assigned strength figure of 9.2.

Is there a musk attar or an amber attar I should look at?

Neither exists as a bottle. White musk is a published base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab, and amber is a published base note in Ameeri and Nawaab. Both sit inside compositions rather than being sold on their own, and Ameeri's base carries both at Rs 679 for 6ml.

Who actually makes these attars?

Sonal Sahani, who founded SOSA and trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA, Versailles. She composes all four attars herself, and every small batch is hand-blended in Pune and signed off by her before it goes out. The attar pages publish that training outright, which is the honest answer to why a hand-blended Pune attar is worth reading about at all.

Is Mastani sweet?

Sweetness has no published grade in this range, so read the tier instead. Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean are published in Mastani's base and in no other pyramid in the range, so if sweetness is the thing you want to avoid, that base is where you will find it and the other three publish neither word.

Start with one bottle

Mastani ₹685 for 6ml, 4.9 from 112 published customer reviews, and the only occasion line of the four that names date nights. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
