People write to me about incense perfumes as though they were complaining about smoke, and then list frankincense and myrrh in the same sentence. Those are two different things, and the difference is the whole reason these bottles keep ambushing you. What you are reacting to is almost never fire. It is resin.
Quick answers — read this first
What is actually making a perfume smell of incense? Resin, not smoke. The incense character in a modern perfume comes from a small group of materials: frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin and opoponax, all of them gums and resins tapped from trees. They are thick, slow and enormously long-lived, which is why perfumers use them as fixatives - the material that holds everything else in place. So a resin is not a top note you can wait out. It is the part of the composition that is still on your wrist at midnight, and it is the reason a resinous perfume feels as though it has moved in.

Which SOSA products should I take off my list? Nawaab, first and clearly. It is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, and it is the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber, and both are the wrong direction for you. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars in the range, and it does not include Adaa at all.

So what should I buy, and what does it cost? SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. Its published notes are bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - not one resin among them, and no amber either. SOSA makes exactly four attars and none of the four is resin-led, but Adaa is the only one with no oud and no amber anywhere in it. Buy the 3ml and nothing larger: there is no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml is how you test one. The 6ml is ₹669 and the 12ml ₹1,149 afterwards.
The short answer
Short answer: the incense character you are describing is resin rather than smoke - frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin - and resins are fixatives, so they sit in the base and are the last thing to leave. SOSA publishes no resin in any of its four attars, and there is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the range. Adaa is the bottle: ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size. Nawaab is ruled out by name for its aged tobacco, leather and amber, and so are Tabac Noir and the Pack of 3.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, with no resin and no amber in the published list. It is alcohol-free and it wears 6-8 hours. If you would rather spray, SOSA Khayaal at ₹599 for 10ml is a sparkling bergamot and neroli, and neither it nor SOSA Samundar, an aquatic marine, is an attar.
Next step: send me the name of the incense-like perfume that put you off, and its note list if you still have the box, and I will tell you which resin was doing it and which of our four attars carries nothing of the kind - Ask for an attar recommendation.

SOSA Adaa - tap through and read the published note list before you buy
Straight answer
Which attar should somebody buy if they hate incense-like perfumes?
SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379 - and the reason is worth more to you than the name, because it will travel to any counter you walk into. Start with what I am not going to do. I am not going to argue you out of this. Incense has a long and serious life in India, in agarbatti, in loban, in the itr tradition that attar belongs to, and none of that is in question here. You simply do not want to smell of it, which is a matter of taste and not a mistake to be corrected. What is worth explaining is the material. Incense in perfumery is resin, not smoke: frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, opoponax - gums tapped from trees, thick and dark and very slow to evaporate. Perfumers reach for them because they work as fixatives, holding the lighter materials in place, which means a resin is structurally the last thing standing in a composition. That is the whole complaint in one sentence. A resinous perfume does not smell of incense for twenty minutes; it smells of incense for the rest of the day, because the resin was chosen to outlast everything else in the bottle. Now the ruling out, ours included. SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab - and not one of the four is resin-led. There is no frankincense, no myrrh and no labdanum in any published note list SOSA has, and there is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the range, which I would rather state plainly than let you hunt for. But Nawaab still comes off your list: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, which is the nearest thing SOSA makes to the density you are describing. On the perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran a saffron sweet-amber, and the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars, with no Adaa in it. What is left is Adaa: bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base and no resin underneath it. Alcohol-free, no DPG, on a jojoba and sandalwood base, and it wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Buy the 3ml at ₹379, because SOSA sells no sampler and the 3ml is the sample size. Two disclosures: Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role, and if jasmine is also out then no attar here is yours. And SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health claim of any kind - how your skin or your head responds to a fragrance is a question for a doctor, not a perfumer. Ask for an attar recommendation and tell me which bottle put you off.
Incense in a perfume is resin, and resins are fixatives, so they are the last thing to leave rather than the first. None of SOSA's four attars is resin-led, but Nawaab has aged tobacco, leather and amber, so it goes. Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml is the one with no resin, no amber and no oud in it.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, and white musk rather than a resin in the base. No frankincense, no myrrh, no labdanum, no amber. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is where to start.

The material fact underneath your question
A resin is chosen for its staying power, which is why an incense perfume is still there when you would like it gone

The bottle, and the size to buy

One attar, and one honest alternative if you would rather spray than dab. Both cards link to the live product page, so you can read the note list and look for a resin before you spend anything - which is the habit this page is really trying to hand over.

SOSA Adaa
For a reader whose firm rule is 'nothing resinous'
SOSA Adaa, 3ml
Bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. No frankincense, no myrrh, no labdanum, no amber and no oud. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the size to buy first.
From ₹379
SOSA Khayaal
If a spray suits you better than an oil
SOSA Khayaal, 10ml
Not an attar. This is the SOSA perfume line, described by its SOSA name and its accord only: a sparkling bergamot and neroli. No note list and no wear figure is published for it, so if you need to confirm there is no resin in a bottle before buying, stay with the attars, where the full list is published. ₹599 for 10ml.

SOSA Adaa
The attar for a reader who has ruled resin out
SOSA Adaa
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Positioned for office hours and daytime weddings. No oud, no vanilla, no rose and no resin.

Why a resin never leaves, and what to do about it

Three things sit under this question, and only the last is about shopping. The first two are the reason the shopping keeps going wrong.

1
Separate the resin from the fire
Incense is a material, not an event, and the material is a tree gum
When a stick of agarbatti burns, two things reach you: the smoke of the burning, and the resin in what is being burnt. A perfume cannot give you the first. There is no fire in a bottle. What it can do is give you the resin, neat, at full strength and without the smoke to lift it - frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin. That is why an incense perfume can smell more insistently resinous than actual incense ever does, and why people describe it as sitting on them rather than around them. Once you know that, the word on the listing stops being vague. You are looking for a named gum, not for an atmosphere.
Tip: Search a listing for frankincense, olibanum, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin and opoponax. Those six are the whole family.
SOSA Adaa

2
Read the base, because that is where a fixative sits
Resins are chosen for longevity, so they are the part of the perfume you live with
A note list is printed top to bottom and almost everybody reads only the top. The top is the part chosen to sell you the bottle: a citrus, a green leaf, twenty minutes of sparkle. Resins are never up there. They are heavy, slow, and used precisely because they hold a composition together as the light materials evaporate, so they arrive late and then stay. That is also why a resinous perfume feels stronger by hour four than it did at the counter. Nothing changed. The composition simply got to the part that was always going to be resin. Read the last two notes on any list first and you stop being surprised.
Tip: If either of the last two notes is a gum or a resin, the bottle is not for you regardless of how bright the opening is.
SOSA Adaa

3
Then rule out by name, SOSA included
Four attars in, and the honest finding is that none of them is resin-led
Here is the subtraction in public. Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber: no frankincense, but the densest base SOSA builds, and the amber puts it firmly on your no list. Ameeri is Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh, which is warm rather than resinous but still a substantial centre. Mastani adds oudh, vanilla and tonka to two florals. Adaa is bergamot, cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, and is the only one with neither oud nor amber. So there is no resin-led attar to rule out, because SOSA does not make one, and Adaa is what stands.

The SOSA principle
Incense in a perfume is resin rather than smoke, and a resin is used as a fixative, which means it is chosen for the specific job of leaving last.
So the incense you object to is not the opening you smelled in a shop. It is the part of the composition that was designed to still be there at the end of the day.
SOSA Adaa
No resin in the published list: SOSA Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, with no gum or resin anywhere in it. ₹379 for the 3ml.

Spotting a resin on a listing

Keep this open in another tab the next time you are reading a perfume page, because the vocabulary is what makes the difference here.

The SOSA shortlist
What an incense complaint usually means, and where it lands in the SOSA range
The word on the listing What to do
Frankincense or olibanum
The same material under two names, and the definitive incense note. It is a base fixative, so it leaves last. No SOSA attar contains it, and no post here will pretend otherwise about a product that does.
Myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, opoponax
The rest of the resin family: darker, sweeter and equally slow. Treat any of them in the last two notes as a firm no for a reader in your position.
Amber
Not a single material but a warm, resinous accord, usually built with benzoin and labdanum. It is in Nawaab, which is why Nawaab is ruled out on this page rather than recommended.
SOSA AdaaOud
A wood, not a resin, but it is often described as resinous-medicinal and it sits in the base too. Three of SOSA's four attars carry it. Only Adaa does not.
Smoke, smoked, burnt
A different objection, and worth separating from resin. Nawaab's aged tobacco and leather is the smoky-leathery end of the range; Adaa has nothing of either.
SOSA KhayaalNothing dark in the base at all
Then you want a short composition with a thin base. Adaa is the attar version, and on the SOSA perfume line Khayaal is a sparkling bergamot and neroli at ₹599 for 10ml.

If it is specifically the smoke rather than the resin that put you off, the separation is done properly in I don't want my attar to smell smoky, which takes Nawaab and Ameeri apart note by note. And if what you really mean is that resinous perfumes feel like too much material on you rather than the wrong material, that is a different question and it is answered in which attar to buy if resinous fragrances feel too heavy. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Adaa
The 3ml is the sample size: SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the honest way to test one is the smallest bottle of a single attar - never the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055.
One bottle, one size, one pulse point
SOSA Adaa is ₹379 for 3ml - the smallest bottle in the range, and the one to buy first.

A resin is not in a perfume by accident. It is in there to outlast everything else, which is precisely what you are objecting to.

Why this particular bottle, for this particular reader
Bergamot and cardamom on top, white musk underneath, and not one gum or resin in the published list

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and I would rather hand you all four with their notes than a shortlist with the awkward parts trimmed off. Below is the one I am recommending and the two products on the perfume line that are the honest route if an oil is not what you want. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

SOSA makes exactly four attars, none of them resin-led, and there is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the SOSA range - Nawaab, Tabac Noir, Zaffran and the Pack of 3 are named on this page as wrong for you. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never tells you how one of them smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind - how you respond physically to a fragrance is a question for a doctor rather than a perfumer. A note from Sonal

The letters that lead to this page usually contain the word incense and the word smoke in the same sentence, and then a note list with frankincense on it. I understand why. In most Indian homes incense is something that burns, so the smell and the smoke arrive together and there is no reason to separate them. But a perfume has no fire in it, so what it is offering you is the resin on its own, undiluted by any of the air that usually comes with it. That is why the bottle felt so much more insistent than the agarbatti ever did.

The perfumery is straightforward and you should have it. Resins are gums tapped from trees, and their value to a composition is stubbornness: they evaporate slowly and they hold lighter materials in place. Perfumers call that a fixative. It means a resin is never a passing phase. It is the last thing standing, chosen for that job, which is exactly why a resinous perfume seems to grow on you across an afternoon rather than fade. There is nothing mysterious about it and nothing to do with you. It is the material doing what it was put there to do.

So my answer is one bottle at its smallest size: Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml, because SOSA sells no sampler and the 3ml is how you avoid a blind buy at ₹1,149. I am ruling out Nawaab for its aged tobacco, leather and amber, and the Pack of 3 for being the three heaviest attars in the range; Tabac Noir and Zaffran on the perfume line are the wrong direction too. Adaa does carry jasmine sambac, and you should hear that from me. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I hate incense-like perfumes - which attar should I buy?
SOSA Adaa, and buy the 3ml at Rs 379. SOSA makes exactly four attars and none of them is resin-led, but Adaa is the only one with neither oud nor amber: bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. Nawaab is ruled out for its aged tobacco, leather and amber. Adaa does carry jasmine sambac in a supporting role, which is worth knowing before you buy it.
What note actually makes a perfume smell like incense?
A resin, not smoke. The incense character comes from tree gums: frankincense, which is also sold as olibanum, plus myrrh, labdanum, benzoin and opoponax. Perfumers use them as fixatives because they evaporate slowly and hold the lighter materials in place, so they sit in the base of a composition and leave last. That is why a resinous perfume seems to get stronger through the afternoon. Look for those names in the final two notes on any listing.
Does SOSA sell an incense or resin attar?
No. There is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the SOSA range, and no published attar note list contains frankincense, myrrh or labdanum. That is a genuine gap rather than something I am hiding, and it happens to suit you. If you want the nearest thing to density that SOSA does make, that is Nawaab, with its aged tobacco, leather and amber, and it is exactly what this page is ruling out.
Is Nawaab an incense attar?
No, but it is the heaviest attar SOSA makes and it is not for you. Its published notes are white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. There is no frankincense or myrrh in it, so it is not an incense composition in the technical sense, but amber is a warm resinous accord and the tobacco and leather give it the smoky-leathery weight that readers of this page are avoiding. Rs 399 for the 3ml if you decide otherwise.
Should I buy a sampler set before committing?
SOSA does not sell one, so the honest answer is the smallest bottle of a single attar. The 3ml is the sample size: Adaa is Rs 379, and the 6ml and 12ml are Rs 669 and Rs 1,149 once you know it suits you. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is not a sampler either, because it is three full-size attars, and it is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani with no Adaa in it. Wear the 3ml for a whole day and judge the base.
SOSA Adaa
And the note I will not bury: Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role. If jasmine is also on your list, none of SOSA's four attars is your bottle and I would rather say so now.
Incense is resin, and resin is a fixative
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oils for a reader who has ruled resin and incense out

SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer.
