The plan in front of you has three rooms on it, so three zones feels like the thorough answer. Walk the same plan as air rather than as floor area and it is usually one room with three labels.
Quick answers — read this first
One machine or separate zones at 1,200 sq ft? One machine, and I would not spend a rupee on the second. A zone is a volume of air with a boundary around it - a wall, a door, its own AC. At 1,200 sq ft with an open entrance and a lounge that is screened rather than sealed, you have one volume with three names, and a second machine would be buying a gradient the building cannot hold. It would also give you a second dial, which is how a store ends up with a loud end and a quiet end inside a month.

Where exactly does it go? Between the showroom and the lounge, on the air path, well inside the room. Not at the entrance, because a door that opens all day exchanges that air many times an hour and the threshold is never where a store's scent lives. Not in the return-air stream, or the AC will take the profile away before the floor gets it. Wall-mounted or into the HVAC if the fit-out allows, because that is what reaches the lounge without putting a machine in a room where clients sit for an hour.

What does it cost? One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999. Total hardware spend ₹11,999, one machine. It is rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so at 1,200 sq ft it runs comfortably low rather than working hard, which is exactly the condition you want. Installation, warranty, AMC and corporate or GST invoicing terms are not published - ask us before you build them into a fit-out schedule rather than assuming. And do not run it at all for the first few weeks after handover, while adhesive, paint and new joinery ventilate out of the building.
The short answer
Short answer: one machine, no zones. At 1,200 sq ft an entrance, a showroom and a screened lounge are almost always one volume of air with three names, so a second machine buys a gradient the building will not hold. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, placed between showroom and lounge on the air path, low setting, trading-hour timers, key-lock on. Total ₹11,999.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), wall or HVAC mounted between the main showroom and the private lounge, running low on a trading-hour timer with the key-lock engaged.
Next step: send the 1,200 sq ft plan with the entrance, the lounge, the ceiling height and the AC supply and return grilles marked, and we will put a cross where the machine goes - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

The zoning question is really a question about walls and air handling. Where there is no boundary, a second machine adds a second dial rather than a second zone.

Straight answer
Does a 1,200 sq ft boutique with an entrance, showroom and lounge need one machine or separate zones?
One machine, placed properly, and the reasoning is worth having in full because the zoning instinct is strong when a plan has three labelled areas on it. Start with what a zone actually is. A zone is a volume of air with a boundary around it - a wall, a door, and ideally its own air handling. On a 1,200 sq ft plan the entrance is normally open to the showroom, and the private lounge is normally screened, glazed or curtained rather than sealed and separately conditioned. That means all three areas are one body of air wearing three names, and a second machine placed in the lounge would not create a second zone. It would create a second dial, which is a genuine operational problem: two dials on one floor become two levels within a fortnight, because each one gets nudged by whoever was standing nearest when a customer said something, and nobody can afterwards reconstruct how the store ended up loud at one end. So: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, and the whole craft is in where it sits. Put it between the showroom and the lounge, on the air path, well inside the room. Wall-mounted or into the HVAC if your fit-out allows, because that reaches the lounge without standing a machine in a room where a client sits for an hour. Not at the entrance: a door that opens constantly exchanges the threshold air many times an hour, and turning the machine up to fight that makes the interior overpowering while the doorway still smells of the street. The threshold is simply not where a store's scent lives, and accepting that saves you from the most common mistake in retail scenting. Not in the return-air stream either, or your air handling will pull the profile away before the floor sees it - ten minutes with your HVAC contractor to identify the supply and return grilles is the highest-value ten minutes in this whole exercise. Then level, which matters more than placement and far more than the note. Quieter than you think. Set it for the advisor who breathes it nine hours a day, six days a week, not for the customer who is in it for forty minutes, and if the team says it is too much, it is too much - they hold the only real measurement in the building, because your own nose adapts within twenty minutes of arriving. Confirm it by walking in from outside and asking whether you notice a fragrance or a room somebody looks after; the second is the right answer. The lounge, if anything, wants it quieter still, since that is where people sit longest and exposure compounds - and one correctly placed machine gives you that naturally, because the lounge inherits a softened version of the showroom rather than getting its own source. On register, dry: dry woods, cedar and vetiver, often a leather facet, sometimes a soft dry amber - never sweet, edible, powdery or floral. Total hardware spend ₹11,999, one machine. The Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, so at this size it runs low rather than hard, and it is waterless, adding no moisture to the room and leaving no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine, not a claim about your stock. Two honest notes before you build this into a fit-out schedule: installation, warranty, AMC, corporate or GST invoicing and delivery timing are not published terms and should be confirmed with us, and cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the plan with the grilles marked.
One machine, no zones. Place it between showroom and lounge on the air path, never at the door or in the return. ₹11,999 total, key-locked, on your trading hours.
One SOSA Vaayu for the whole boutique - 1000m³ rated, so 1,200 sq ft runs it low rather than hard - waterless, under 38dB so it never intrudes on a quiet sale, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999, and that is the whole hardware budget for this store.

The machine for a 1,200 sq ft boutique

At this size the ladder has one clear answer and one honest alternative, and which applies depends on whether the store is genuinely three areas or one open room.

SOSA Vaayu
1,200 sq ft with a lobby and a lounge
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Wall or HVAC mountable, which is precisely how one machine reaches a lounge without standing in it.
From ₹11,999
SOSA Sukoon
If your 1,200 sq ft is one open room
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. A single open trading room with no lobby, no lounge and no central AC to mount into does not need distribution, and distribution is most of what the Vaayu is selling you at this size.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
One machine for the entrance, showroom and lounge
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three placement decisions

At this size the machine is chosen in five minutes and placed over an afternoon. The placement is the part that decides whether the store reads as coherent.

1
Find the air path before you choose a wall
Where the machine sits relative to supply and return decides everything
Ask your HVAC contractor to mark the supply and return grilles on the plan, then place the machine where the air is moving away from it into the store, not where it is being drawn back into the system. A unit sitting under a return will lose most of its work to the plant room, and the usual response - turning it up - burns oil and still leaves the floor thin. If the fit-out allows an HVAC mount, take it: the profile then arrives everywhere the conditioned air arrives, which at 1,200 sq ft means the entrance, the floor and the lounge from one point. Ten minutes with the HVAC drawings is worth more than any setting you will choose afterwards.
Tip: Mark the grilles on the plan before the joinery is fixed, not after.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Leave the threshold alone
The entrance is not where a store's scent lives, and no setting changes that
A door onto a street or a mall corridor exchanges the air near it many times an hour. Nothing you buy will hold a fragrance there, and the standard error is to turn the machine up until the doorway smells right, at which point the showroom is overpowering and the doorway still is not. If the fit-out allows a small lobby or an air curtain, that helps the whole store rather than only the smell. Otherwise, place well inside, accept the threshold for what it is, and let the customer meet the room two or three steps in. What they should notice on arrival is a room somebody looks after, not a fragrance - and that impression is made a few paces past the door.
Tip: Stand three paces inside with your eyes closed after coming in from outside - that is the position that matters.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

3
Let the lounge inherit rather than own
The room where clients sit longest should be the quietest room in the store
A private lounge is where exposure compounds: a client can be in it for an hour, and your advisor is in and out of it all day. A dedicated machine in there will almost always end up too strong, because it is set by somebody who has just walked in from the showroom. One machine on the air path between showroom and lounge gives the lounge a softened version of the same profile, which is exactly right. Anyone must be able to switch the machine off in seconds, and if a client mentions sensitivity the answer is to turn it down or off - never to explain the plan or defend the level.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
At 1,200 sq ft you rarely have three zones; you have one volume of air with three names, and a second machine would buy you a gradient the building has no way of holding.
Spend the effort on where the single machine sits relative to the air handling, because that is the decision that does the work.
SOSA Vaayu
Comfortably under-worked: SOSA Vaayu is rated to 1000m³, so a 1,200 sq ft boutique runs it on a low setting rather than hard. ₹11,999.

The plan, area by area

The whole scheme for a 1,200 sq ft boutique on one page, worth pinning up where whoever opens in the morning will see it.

The SOSA plan
A 1,200 sq ft boutique - one machine, three areas
The area What to do
Entrance and threshold
No machine and no expectation. The door exchanges this air constantly; the customer meets the room two or three paces in.
SOSA VaayuMain showroom floor
The single profile at a low setting on a trading-hour timer. This is the zone the level is set for, and it is set for the advisor.
Between showroom and lounge
Where the machine actually goes - on the air path, wall or HVAC mounted, away from the return grille.
Private client lounge
The same profile, inherited and softer. No machine of its own, because this is where exposure compounds.
Billing, packaging and back office
Nothing of their own. They inherit the showroom, which is the correct amount of attention to give them.
SOSA SukoonTotal hardware
₹11,999, one Vaayu. A single open room with no lobby or lounge takes a Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead.

If the store is in a mall and the corridor is pushing air at you all day, placement gets harder and it is worked through in where to position a scent machine in a mall store with constant corridor airflow. And if this 1,200 sq ft boutique is the first of several, the full sequence for planning one from scratch is in designing a flagship luxury watch boutique from scratch. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Mounted, not parked: Wall or HVAC mounting is how one machine reaches a lounge without standing in the room where clients sit. ₹11,999.
One machine, one level, three areas
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ - so a 1,200 sq ft boutique runs it low, quietly, all day.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
Three labels on a floor plan are not three zones. Air does not read labels, and a second machine in a room that shares its air is just a second dial for somebody to nudge.

The SOSA 1,200 sq ft specification

One machine covers this store, and the only real question is whether your 1,200 sq ft is genuinely three areas or one open room. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

One machine, placed on the air path, with the level set for the advisor rather than the customer. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting, seating or case layout; it is never used to cover or neutralise another smell, and a new fit-out that still smells of adhesive, paint or joinery must be ventilated out rather than scented over - a new store runs unscented for its first weeks. Installation, warranty, AMC, corporate or GST invoicing and delivery timing are not published terms and must be confirmed with SOSA. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

New-store questions almost always arrive as zoning questions, and I think that is because a fit-out drawing invites them. Three labelled areas on a plan look like three problems. So the first thing I do is ask for the ceiling height and the position of the AC grilles, and about eight times in ten the answer that comes back describes a single volume of air with a screen across part of it. At that point the zoning question dissolves and we are talking about one machine and where it stands. So the two things worth sending me are the ceiling height and the services drawing, rather than the material palette.

The reframe I would offer is that at 1,200 sq ft the interesting decision is placement, not quantity, and the placement decision belongs to the HVAC drawings rather than to the fragrance brief. A machine in the wrong relationship to the return grille will underperform at every setting, and the usual reaction is to turn it up, which spends oil and makes the showroom heavy without ever fixing the thin patch. Ten minutes with the drawings before the joinery goes in solves it permanently. It is also the cheapest thing on the list, because moving a machine on a drawing costs nothing and moving it after handover costs a contractor's visit.

So: one Vaayu at ₹11,999, mounted between showroom and lounge, low, on your trading hours, key-lock on. Total hardware ₹11,999. If it turns out you have one open room and no lounge, buy a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and put the ₹10,100 into your lighting, which does more for how a boutique feels than fragrance ever will. Ask us about installation, warranty, AMC and invoicing rather than assuming any of them - none of it is published. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. And do not switch it on for the opening - let the store ventilate for its first weeks and set the level once the building has settled.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need one scent machine or separate fragrance zones in a 1,200 sq ft boutique?
One machine. A zone is a volume of air with a boundary around it - a wall, a door and ideally its own air handling. At 1,200 sq ft an open entrance and a screened lounge are almost always one volume with three names, so a second machine would not create a second zone. It would create a second dial, and two dials on one floor become two levels within a fortnight. The one exception is a lounge that is genuinely sealed and separately conditioned, and at 1,200 sq ft that is rarer than the floor plan suggests.
Where exactly should the machine be placed?
Between the main showroom and the private lounge, on the air path, well inside the room, and wall or HVAC mounted if the fit-out allows. Not at the entrance, because a door that opens all day exchanges that air many times an hour. Not in the return-air stream, because the system will pull the profile away before the floor sees it. Ask your HVAC contractor to mark supply and return grilles on the plan first. If a wall or HVAC mount is possible, take it, because that puts the profile wherever your conditioned air already goes rather than wherever there was room for a machine.
Should the private client lounge be scented separately?
No. It should inherit a softened version of the showroom profile from the single machine, and it should be the quietest area in the store. Clients sit in a lounge for an hour and advisors are in and out of it all day, so exposure compounds there. A dedicated machine in a small lounge almost always ends up too strong, because it gets set by somebody who has just walked in from the showroom floor. One correctly placed machine gives you that softening for nothing, because the lounge receives the showroom's air rather than a source of its own.
What does scenting a 1,200 sq ft watch boutique cost?
One SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, and that is the entire hardware budget for this store. It is rated to 1000 cubic metres, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, so at this size it runs comfortably low rather than working hard. If your 1,200 sq ft is genuinely one open room with no lobby and no lounge, a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 is the honest buy instead. Installation, warranty, AMC, corporate invoicing and delivery timing are not published terms and should be confirmed with SOSA before they go into a fit-out programme.
Will scenting the new boutique bring in more customers?
No one can promise that, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from everything else a customer meets in a boutique. What the machine does is stop the air being the one element in your new store that nobody decided. That is worth doing, it is the last five per cent, and it will not rescue a store where the lighting is wrong. A new store should also run unscented for its first weeks while adhesive, paint and new joinery ventilate out, because that is a building process rather than a fragrance one.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
