2. Kill the source. Sofas, rugs, curtains and cushions are sponges. Vacuum upholstery weekly, wash throws and covers, keep pet bedding out of the room or freshly laundered, and never let damp shoes or wet umbrellas dry in the living room. Ninety per cent of "bad living-room smell" lives in the textiles.
