An entrance is usually under fifty square feet, and it carries more of a home's reputation than any other part of it. It is also, in most Indian homes, where the worst smells live: shoes, umbrellas, sports bags and a bin that ended up there for convenience. This is the practical piece - what to fix first, exactly where the machine goes relative to the door and the air, and how long before people arrive to run it.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I make my entrance smell good every day? Fix the sources first: a doormat long enough for two full steps and cleaned weekly, a shoe cupboard that is aired and dried rather than sealed, and no bin within the entrance at all. Then place one machine on the air path roughly two metres inside the door, out of the direct draught of the opening door, and run it low and continuously with a longer window before guests arrive. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and is waterless, so it can sit near a console with no dampness.

Where should a diffuser be placed near a front door? Not in the doorway itself and not in a still corner. Put it about one and a half to two metres inside the entrance, at roughly chest height on a console or wall mounted above a shoe cabinet, positioned where air already moves - near the air-conditioning return is ideal. Directly beside an opening door pushes fragrance straight back outside, and a sealed corner produces a strong patch and a dead hall. The SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so it mounts easily.

How long before guests should I run the entrance diffuser? Run it low continuously and add a longer window of about 45 minutes before people arrive. Fragrance that has been diffusing for that long has spread evenly and settled with no findable source, while a burst at the door announces itself. The SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) has 1, 4, 8 and 24 hour timers with adjustable intensity, so both the daily level and the pre-guest window run without anyone remembering them.
The short answer
Short answer: deal with the doormat, the shoe cupboard and the bin before you buy any fragrance, then put one machine on the air path about two metres inside the door, out of the door's draught, and run it low and continuously with a 45 minute window before guests. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, waterless and under 38dB.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on the hall air path or the air-conditioning return, wall mounted above the shoe cabinet if console space is tight.
Next step: send us a photo of your entrance with the door, the shoe storage and the air-conditioning return in it, and we will place the machine - ask us what fits your home.
Getting an entrance right, in the order the work has to happenFirst - the doormat, big enough to take two full steps, cleanedSecond - the shoe cupboard, aired, dried, ventilated, kept closedThird - the bin, moved out of the entry completelyThen - one machine on the air path, about two metres inside the doorDaily - low and continuous, with a longer run before guests arrive
The first three rows are free and they decide whether the fourth is worth doing at all. Fragrance over a shoe cupboard gives a guest a perfumed shoe cupboard, which is worse than either smell on its own.

Straight answer
How do I get my entrance to smell luxurious every single day?
In two stages, and the order is not negotiable. Stage one is subtraction, and it is free. The doormat first: it should be long enough to take two full steps, it should live outside or immediately inside the door, and it needs cleaning weekly, because a mat that has absorbed six months of street dust and monsoon damp is itself a smell source. The shoe cupboard second: this is the single biggest offender in an Indian entrance. Shoes go in dry, never damp, so give wet shoes somewhere ventilated to sit overnight first; the cupboard should be closed but ventilated rather than sealed, cleaned out properly every few weeks, and worth adding activated charcoal or silica if it is enclosed. The bin third: move it out of the entrance completely. A bin within a metre of the door hands every arriving guest a small, unmistakable signal, and no amount of fragrance survives it. Add to that list wet umbrellas, sports kit and pet towels, all of which should dry somewhere with airflow. Only after that does stage two, the fragrance, make sense. Placement: put the machine roughly one and a half to two metres inside the door, not in the doorway itself - a machine right beside an opening door sends most of its output straight outside every time somebody arrives. Aim for chest height, on a console or wall mounted above the shoe cabinet, and place it where the air already moves: alongside the air-conditioning return is the single best position in most flats, because the system then distributes the scent through the whole floor instead of leaving you with a strong patch in the hall and nothing beyond it. Avoid a sealed corner, avoid pointing it at a wall a foot away, and keep it out of the direct sightline from the open door. Run time: low and continuous is the daily setting, with a longer window of about 45 minutes before guests arrive. Continuity is what makes an entrance smell the same on a Wednesday morning as on a Saturday night, and 45 minutes is what lets a scent spread and settle so it has no findable source. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) suits this job specifically: it is rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so the entrance machine also handles the rooms beyond it; it is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, so it wall mounts above a shoe cabinet; it is waterless, so no dampness or residue near a console, a mirror or art in a small space; it runs under 38dB, which matters in a silent hall; and its 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and key-lock hold the schedule and the level. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A free home scenting plan will place it against a photo of your entrance, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Mat, shoe cupboard, bin - fix those first. Then one machine about two metres inside the door on the air path, low and continuous, with 45 minutes before guests.
An entrance machine has to be small, silent and dry, because the hall is tiny and usually has a console, a mirror and shoes in it. One SOSA Vaayu: 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, wall mountable, under 38dB, waterless, and still rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft) so it carries the rest of the floor too.

Stage one of this page costs nothing. Stage two is one machine, and in an entrance its size, silence and dryness matter as much as its coverage. Here it is in full.

Placement, run time and the three things that undo everything

Three things decide whether an entrance smells good, and two of them have nothing to do with fragrance.

1
The three undoers
The mat, the shoe cupboard and the bin, in that order
A doormat that has not been cleaned in months holds street dust and monsoon damp, and it sits exactly where a guest takes their first breath. A shoe cupboard is worse: enclosed, warm and holding leather, rubber and yesterday's damp, and every time it opens it empties into the hall. A bin near the door is the most avoidable of the three and the most common, because it is convenient. Fix them in that order. Clean the mat weekly, dry shoes before they go into the cupboard, keep the cupboard ventilated rather than airtight and clear it out every few weeks, and move the bin somewhere else entirely. This costs nothing and it decides whether anything you spend afterwards is worth spending.
Tip: no fragrance survives a shoe cupboard. Sort the sources first.
SOSA Vaayu
Once the entrance is genuinely clean, the Vaayu gives it one consistent character instead of a rotating one.

2
Placement
Two metres in, on the air path, at chest height
The two common mistakes are opposite. The first is putting the machine right at the door, where every opening pushes the fragrance you just made straight out into the corridor. The second is tucking it into a dead corner or behind a door leaf, where output builds into a strong local patch and never reaches the rest of the home. The answer is the middle: about one and a half to two metres inside the entrance, at roughly chest height, positioned where the house already moves air. In an air-conditioned flat that means near the return, which turns the system into your distribution network and gives you an even scent across the whole floor. Keep it out of the direct sightline from the open door, and never point it at a wall a foot away.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu can stand on a console, wall mount above a shoe cabinet or mount to the HVAC, so the air path decides the position, not the furniture.

3
Run time
Low and continuous, plus 45 minutes before people arrive
An entrance that smells good only when guests are due is not an entrance that smells good. The daily setting should be a low continuous level that you personally will stop noticing within a week, which is normal and expected. Then add a longer window before people arrive - about 45 minutes - so the fragrance has spread and settled rather than arriving as a burst. Two practical warnings. Do not raise the intensity when you host, because a warm, crowded house lifts fragrance on its own. And do not turn it up because you can no longer smell it: you adapted, the level did not drop.
Tip: start earlier, never stronger, and resist turning it up when you stop noticing it.
SOSA Vaayu
1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers with adjustable intensity and a key-lock keep both the daily level and the guest window fixed.

The SOSA principle
A luxurious entrance is mostly subtraction. Take away the shoes, the bin and the damp mat, and you are ninety per cent of the way there.
Fragrance is what you add to a clean hall. It is not what you add instead of cleaning one.

What an entrance should smell of

On what an entrance should actually smell of, the answer is narrower than for the rest of the house.

Keep the entrance profile dry and clean - tea, light woods, soft citrus - because a small volume concentrates everything and sweetness in a tiny hall becomes heavy fast. If you want the reasoning behind why the doorway matters so much, what makes guests say your house smells amazing explains the fresh-nose window, and small details guests notice in a beautiful home covers the rest of the visible checklist at the door. This piece sits under our pillar guide on how to make your home feel more expensive.

Most entrances do not need a fragrance. They need the shoe cupboard opened, cleaned and dried, and then a fragrance.

The honest limit, and it is the whole point of this page: fragrance works alongside cleaning and ventilation and cannot replace them. A damp mat, an unaired shoe cupboard, a bin by the door, monsoon damp or pet odour all need dealing with at source, and scent on top produces both smells at once. It is not an air purifier and makes no health claim. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. A note from Sonal

I ask for a photograph of the entrance before I recommend anything, and about half the time my answer is to spend nothing at all yet. Open the shoe cupboard, dry the shoes, clean the mat, move the bin. People find this irritating to hear from someone selling diffusers, but it is the difference between a machine working and a machine making things stranger.

Once that is done, placement does the rest. About two metres inside the door, chest height, on the air path - beside the air-conditioning return if you have one, because then the whole floor gets the same scent instead of just the hall. One Vaayu covers 1000m³, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, so the entrance machine is also the home machine. Low all day, 45 minutes longer before guests.

And the honest part. An entrance smells expensive because it is clean, dry and aired first, then scented. Fragrance cannot cover a shoe cupboard, damp or a bin, it works alongside ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them, and it is not an air purifier. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my entrance smell luxurious every day?
Fix the sources first, then add one machine. Clean the doormat weekly, dry shoes before they go into the cupboard and keep it ventilated rather than sealed, and move any bin out of the entrance. Then place a diffuser about one and a half to two metres inside the door at chest height, on the air path, and run it at a low continuous level with a longer window before guests arrive.
Where exactly should the diffuser go near the front door?
Not in the doorway and not in a dead corner. Roughly one and a half to two metres inside the entrance, at chest height, on a console or wall mounted above the shoe cabinet, and ideally next to the air-conditioning return so the system spreads the scent through the floor. Right beside the door pushes fragrance outside every time it opens; a sealed corner makes a strong patch and a dead hall.
How long before guests arrive should I run it?
About 45 minutes on top of the low continuous daily level. That is enough for the fragrance to spread evenly and settle so it has no obvious source. Do not increase the intensity for guests, because a warm and crowded house lifts fragrance on its own. The SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) has 1, 4, 8 and 24 hour timers with adjustable intensity.
How do I stop my shoe cupboard ruining the entrance?
Never put damp shoes into it, give wet shoes and umbrellas somewhere ventilated to dry overnight, keep the cupboard closed but not airtight, empty and clean it every few weeks, and consider activated charcoal or silica inside if it is fully enclosed. Fragrance layered over a shoe cupboard gives you both smells at once, which is worse than either.
Is a reed diffuser or a plug-in enough for an entrance?
For a few weeks. Reeds are strongest in the first days and noticeably faint by around week six, so the hall smells different month to month, and heated plug-ins tend to be strong then flat. If you want the entrance to smell the same every day, a waterless nebuliser at a low continuous level is the honest answer. The SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) holds 400ml for up to 75 days at under 38dB.
