Why does my living room smell of curry when the kitchen is clean, and how do I fix it?
Indian cooking is not louder than other cooking. It is oilier in the air, and that is a physics fact rather than a judgement. A tadka is the clearest example: hot ghee or oil, then mustard seed, cumin, hing and curry leaf dropped into it, and the whole point of the technique is to blow the aromatic compounds out of the spice and into the fat in about fifteen seconds. What leaves the pan is not only fragrance. It is a fine aerosol of cooking fat carrying that fragrance, thrown upward on a very strong convection current. Deep frying does the same thing for far longer. Those droplets are too small to see and too light to fall like crumbs, so they travel wherever the air in your home is travelling, and they stop when they meet something soft or something cool: curtains, sofa fabric, cushion covers, throws, rugs, dining chairs, and a thin invisible film on walls, ceilings and cabinet fronts. Which reframes the whole problem. Two hours after dinner, what you are smelling is usually not in the air at all. Reasonable ventilation clears the airborne part within an hour or so. The smell that is still there at eleven at night is on the curtains and on the sofa, releasing slowly, and you notice it most when you sit down and compress the fabric. Curtains are large, absorbent, hang directly in the air path between the kitchen and the room, and in most homes are washed roughly never. That combination makes them the biggest reservoir of cooking oil in the house, and because deposited oil oxidises over months, old curtains stop smelling of food and start smelling stale and faintly rancid - the smell people describe as an old-flat smell. Check the care label: cotton and polyester blends usually machine wash on a gentle cycle, lined and heavy drapes and anything with an interlining go to a dry-cleaner, and sheers wash easily and quickly. Two or three cleans a year for the panels nearest the kitchen, once a year for the rest. In between, take them down and hang them outside in moving air for a few hours, which helps a little though nothing like washing does. If you are choosing new ones for an open-plan home, a lighter washable fabric near the kitchen and heavier drapes further away is a genuinely practical decision.

Start with the upholstery tool, take the cushions off, get into the seams and the crevices and under the frame, because loose dust and crumbs hold a surprising amount of smell. Then look at the care code before you wet anything. Removable covers usually machine wash and this is the cheapest, most effective thing in the whole article. Run a clean white cloth over the wall just outside the kitchen opening, about head height, and look at it. In a home that cooks daily it will not be clean. That thin film is on the walls, the ceiling above the opening, the top of the fridge, the TV unit, the console, picture frames, light fittings and the top edges of doors, and it releases slowly for as long as it is there. Fresh film comes off with warm water and a drop of dish soap, so the fix is to do it on a rhythm rather than as a rescue mission - the wall and ceiling near the opening a few times a year, the horizontal surfaces monthly. Watch two things everybody misses: the top of the tall units and the fridge, where nobody looks; and light fittings and lampshades, which warm up, drive the smell off and quietly redistribute it into the room every evening. Fabric lampshades near an open kitchen are a genuinely bad idea.

The first time somebody told me their living room smelled of food, I asked when the curtains had last been washed. There was a long pause. That pause is the whole article, and it is not a criticism of anybody - curtains are heavy, taking them down is a job, and nobody grows up being told that the panel next to the kitchen is the most important piece of fabric in the house.
