Zones are made at the doorways, not in the middle of rooms.
Nobody notices a scent standing still in it. They notice it in the second after they walk through a door — which is where all the design work actually lives.
Making the transitions read as designed
Everything about zoning that works, works at a threshold. Standing in a room, you stop registering its scent within a few minutes; walking from one zone into another, you register the change immediately. So the quality of a zoned villa is decided almost entirely by what happens in the second after a door — and that means the relationship between adjacent scents matters far more than the merit of any one of them.
The rule that makes it cohere is a shared note. Cedar runs through the Ritz-Carlton-inspired (white tea, bergamot, cedar), the Westin-inspired (white tea, aloe, cedar) and the 1 Hotels-inspired (cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves). The second rule is direction. Zones should get quieter and warmer as you go inward — clean and lifted at the entrance, warm and low in the master bedroom. A villa that is most strongly scented in its private rooms and neutral at the door has it backwards, and the effect is subtle but genuinely disorienting: the house feels like it is trying hardest where nobody is watching.
