There is a usable test, and it has nothing to do with how many sprays or dabs anybody recommends: if a colleague can tell you have arrived before they see you, it is too much.
Quick answers — read this first
How much perfume is too much for an office? Any amount that reaches beyond about an arm's length. For an oil attar that is usually more than one dab per wrist.
How do I know if I am over-applying? You cannot tell by smelling yourself - nose fatigue removes that ability within half an hour. Ask somebody honest, or apply less and see whether anything changes.
Is it different in an AC office? Yes. Recirculated air accumulates fragrance, so the indoor dose is roughly half the outdoor one.
The short answer
Short answer: Too much is anything that travels past arm's length. For an oil that is usually more than one dab per wrist in a sealed office.
The pick:Adaa at ₹379 for the most forgiving register, Ameeri at ₹385 at one dab for client days, Mastani at ₹389 for evenings.
Not sure which? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with your office layout, how close you sit to colleagues and what you wear now - we will tell you the dose as well as the bottle.
Office fragrance goes wrong in a predictable order: somebody applies a spray dose of an oil, puts it on the neck in an air-conditioned room, tops it up at lunch because they can no longer smell it, and never finds out what the row behind them thinks. Distance first, register second, dose third, timing fourth, and the clock rather than your own nose fifth. This guide walks that sequence, with the real SOSA attar range at each price.
The honest answer is a distance rather than a number: too much is any amount that reaches past arm's length. For an oil attar in an Indian office that usually means one dab on each inner wrist and nothing else. For a spray it means one or two, aimed at the torso rather than the neck, applied at home. The difficulty is that you cannot check this yourself. Within about half an hour your nose stops registering your own fragrance entirely - it is called olfactory fatigue, it is universal, and it is the single reason well-intentioned people over-apply. The fact that you cannot smell it at eleven is not evidence of anything at all.Three practical checks. Ask one colleague you trust to be honest, in those words, rather than asking whether it smells nice. Halve what you currently apply for a week and see whether anybody notices the reduction - almost nobody ever does, which is instructive. And notice whether people ever step back slightly when you sit down, which is the reaction nobody will tell you about. Air conditioning roughly halves the acceptable dose again, because recirculated air keeps everything you applied in the room with you. Adaa at ₹379 is the most forgiving register if you are unsure. Fragrance is personal and skin chemistry is real - no attar performs identically on everyone.
One line: too much is anything past arm's length - one dab per wrist, and you cannot judge it by your own nose.
If you want one clear answer rather than a shortlist: SOSA Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml - the most forgiving register in the range if you are not yet sure of your own dose. 6ml at ₹669 once you know it is yours.

The test that actually works
Not a number of sprays. A distance, and three ways to check it without trusting your own nose.
Why this works
Wearing fragrance at work
The office shortlist: Adaa ₹379 as the daily, Ameeri ₹385 for client meetings, Mastani ₹389 for office-to-evening, Nawaab ₹399 for after work. All 3ml, 6ml from ₹669.
A fragrance that reaches a colleague who has not approached you is a fragrance they did not choose. Within arm's length it is grooming; beyond it, it becomes an imposition, however pleasant. That boundary is the entire rule, and it converts an unanswerable question about quantity into a simple spatial one.
Tip: Within arm's length is grooming. Beyond it is imposition.
02
Why you cannot judge it
Olfactory fatigue
Your nose adapts to a constant smell within about half an hour and stops reporting it. This is why people reapply at lunch and why they are genuinely surprised to be told they wear too much - they are not being careless, they are being misinformed by their own senses. The correction is to trust the clock and the dose rather than the perception.
03
Three honest checks
Ask, halve, and watch
Ask one colleague directly whether it is too strong, phrased as a real question. Halve your dose for a week and see whether a single person remarks on the change - almost nobody ever does. And watch whether people adjust their position when you sit down, which is the feedback nobody gives verbally.
Tip: Halve it for a week. Nobody will notice.
The SOSA principle
You stop smelling your own fragrance in half an hour. Everyone else has it until you leave.
Which is why the instinct to top up at lunch is precisely backwards.

Picking between the three
If you are unsure of your own hand, start with the register that punishes a mistake least.

Dose by setting
Scent
Why it suits the mood
Open-plan office
One dab per wrist, nothing on the neck, applied before you arrive
Small shared cabin
One dab, one wrist, and a musk-forward register
Client meeting
One dab - the room is temporary and the impression should be too
After work
Two dabs is reasonable once the audience has chosen to be there

The SOSA attar range
Whatever the workplace, the method is the same: decide how far the fragrance should travel, choose a register that stays there, apply one dab at home, and trust the clock rather than your own nose. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the range by the wear it is honestly built for.
The SOSA attar range
Sorted by where each one belongs in a working day - from a ₹379 3ml roll-on to the ₹3,189 trio
SOSA's own interpretations in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml - a different format, not a replacement for attar
from ₹599
Honest notes: fragrance is personal and skin chemistry is real, so longevity, projection and the way a fragrance develops vary between people - no attar performs identically on everyone, and a description is a guide rather than a guarantee. Oil-based attars contain no alcohol, which generally means they sit closer to the skin and change more slowly than a spray; that is a difference in behaviour, not a claim of superiority. Application dose matters more than most people expect: two dabs on pulse points is the intended amount, one in peak heat, and fragrance is not applied to clothing. Heat and humidity lift a fragrance, so the same bottle reads stronger in an Indian summer than in December. SOSA makes no therapeutic, medical, mood or attraction claims for any fragrance, and no claim that a fragrance influences how others judge or respond to the wearer. Bottle sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml; the oil is the same across sizes, and cost per application falls as the bottle gets larger. SOSA's fragrances are made in India. A note from Sonal
Nobody who wears too much fragrance knows they wear too much fragrance. That is not carelessness, it is physiology - and it is the reason this question deserves a real answer rather than a joke.
The mistake I correct most often at work is not the choice of fragrance but the amount. Nose fatigue sets in within about half an hour, so the instinct to top up at lunch is precisely backwards - the room has not stopped smelling it just because you have.
A shared office is the only place people wear fragrance for an audience that never agreed to it, which is the whole argument for restraint. Fragrance is personal - skin, season and dose all change what happens, and no bottle behaves the same on two people. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 and I will help you narrow it down. A part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How much perfume is too much for an office?
Any amount that travels beyond about an arm's length. For an oil attar that is usually more than one dab per wrist.
How can I tell if I am wearing too much?
Not by smelling yourself - nose fatigue removes that ability in half an hour. Ask a colleague directly, or halve the dose for a week.
Does an AC office change the amount?
Yes. Recirculated air accumulates fragrance, so the indoor dose is roughly half what you would wear outdoors.
Why do I stop smelling my own perfume?
Olfactory fatigue - your nose adapts to a constant scent. It is not evidence that the fragrance has faded.
What if I want to be noticed?
Aim for conversational distance rather than the room. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the method - decide the distance first, choose a register that stays there, apply one dab at home - applies whatever brand a buyer finally chooses.
Facts verified September 2026: Fragrance preference is personal and skin chemistry varies, so longevity, projection and development differ between wearers; published notes describe an intended character rather than a guaranteed performance. Oil-based attars contain no alcohol, which generally results in slower evaporation and a closer wear than an alcohol-based spray; this is a difference in format behaviour and not a claim of superiority. Higher skin and ambient temperatures increase the rate at which fragrance materials leave the skin, raising perceived intensity and shortening wear. Two dabs on pulse points is the intended application dose for an oil attar, reduced to one in heat. SOSA makes no therapeutic, medical, mood, attraction or wellbeing claims for any fragrance, and no claim that a fragrance influences how others judge or respond to the wearer. SOSA attar range as listed on sosahomeandbody.com in September 2026: Adaa (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk) ₹379 / 3ml, ₹669 / 6ml, ₹1,149 / 12ml; Ameeri (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh) ₹385 / 3ml, ₹679 / 6ml, ₹1,165 / 12ml; Mastani (night-blooming jasmine, damask rose, oudh) ₹389 / 3ml, ₹685 / 6ml, ₹1,179 / 12ml; Nawaab (white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron) ₹399 / 3ml, ₹699 / 6ml, ₹1,199 / 12ml; the Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani trio ₹1,055 / 3ml, ₹1,859 / 6ml, ₹3,189 / 12ml; Beast solid body perfume 15g ₹549; SOSA eau de parfum sprays from ₹599 for 10ml.
