Every other post in this family answers one part of the question. This one puts the parts in order, because the order is where most showrooms go wrong - they start at which fragrance and end at the level, when the level and the placement decide almost everything and the fragrance decides very little.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I scent a kitchen studio without distracting customers during design consultations? Five decisions, in this order. One: set the level for the ninetieth minute, not the arrival. Two: place the source away from the consultation table, upstream on the air path. Three: run it on trading hours rather than continuously. Four: key-lock it, so the setting survives everybody's opinions. Five: ask the designers, not the customers, because customers never say and designers always know. The fragrance choice is the easy part and comes last.
What does distraction actually look like? Not a complaint. Almost nobody tells a showroom its fragrance is too strong - they become brisker, they stop enjoying the meeting, and they leave to think about it. That is why the method is built on things you can control rather than feedback you will never collect: a low setting, distance from the table, a schedule, a lock, and a design team you ask properly and privately. If a customer can name your fragrance, it is already too strong.
What does the whole thing cost? One machine. Past about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, which is where the adjustable intensity, the 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and the key-lock come from. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Under about 300 sq ft, a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849.
The short answer
Short answer: with five decisions in order: set the level for the ninetieth minute rather than the arrival, place the source away from the consultation table and upstream on the air path, run it on trading hours, key-lock the setting, and take your measurement from the designers rather than from customers. The fragrance choice comes last and matters least. One Vaayu at ₹11,999, or a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) run near the bottom of its range, placed away from the table, key-locked and on trading-hours timers, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where the studio is a single room under about 750 sq ft.
Next step: send the floor plan with the consultation table, the entrance and the air-conditioning grilles marked, plus the cubic volume and your trading hours, and we will return a placement, a starting setting and a schedule - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
Anyone who starts this project at which fragrance has built it upside down. Four of the five decisions have nothing to do with perfumery, and they are the four that decide whether a consultation is comfortable.
How do I scent a kitchen studio without distracting customers during design consultations?
Here is the whole method, in the order it should be done, and the first thing to notice is that four of the five steps are not about fragrance. Step one: set the level for the ninetieth minute. Your customer does not walk past your studio, they sit in it - sixty to ninety minutes with a designer, sometimes twice in a fortnight, sometimes three hours when a family finalises. Exposure accumulates for the whole of that, so a setting judged at the door is almost always wrong by the end of the meeting. The correct level is just detectable when you walk in from the street and out of your attention a minute after you sit down. If a customer can name the fragrance, it is too strong - that is the whole intensity rule and it has never needed a second sentence. Step two: place the source away from the table. One machine, upstream on the air path - near where air enters the room, roughly a metre off the floor, out of the AC return's pull, not at the door because a glass entrance exchanges that air with the street, never inside a display kitchen, and as far from the consultation table as the plan allows. Distance is the cheapest control you own and it never has to be traded against anything. A single source then produces a falling gradient by itself, which puts the entrance at the present end and the consultation table at the quiet end - exactly the right way round, and free. Do not add a second unit near the table: two sources in one connected volume meet rather than add, and near a seated customer it is the worst placement in the building. A second machine belongs to a second volume of air - another floor, its own AC zone, a room with a door that shuts. Step three: run it on trading hours. The 1h/4h/8h/24h timers mean the room settles overnight and every day starts at the level you chose rather than at an accumulated one. If you run live cooking demonstrations, the same timers take the machine off entirely before a demonstration and keep it off until the extraction has cleared the room - the house position, because a demo is a real smell you staged deliberately and an ambient fragrance is an uninvited second voice in it. Step four: lock it. The key-lock exists because showrooms drift. Somebody walks in from the car park, cannot smell anything, and turns it up; three weeks later somebody else does the same. That is how over-scented showrooms happen, and nobody ever decided it. Lock the setting, write the number and the date on a card in the cupboard, and treat a change as a decision rather than an adjustment. What the lock must never prevent is switching off - anyone on the floor should be able to stop the machine in seconds, without asking, if a customer minds or simply asks. Step five: ask the designers, not the customers. You cannot judge it yourself, because the nose adapts within about twenty minutes and your own showroom stops smelling of anything to you. Customers will not tell you; they get brisker and leave. Your designers breathe that air nine hours a day, six days a week, and they will tell you the truth if you ask each of them privately, after an ordinary week rather than on installation day. Treat a hesitation as a no and turn it down that afternoon. Then confirm it yourself: sit at the consultation table for a full ninety minutes doing work that requires concentration, marking the clock at twenty, forty-five, seventy and ninety minutes. Only now does the fragrance matter, and it is the simplest decision of the five: dry, clean and material-led - dry woods such as cedar, pine and sage for warm displays and joinery, a dry green, dry tea or clean mineral for white and minimal rooms, run low because a bright citrus overdone in a kitchen context reads as floor cleaner - and nothing edible at all. No vanilla, no baking, no coffee, no caramel, no warm spice. Our own Fresh Brew, Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla at ₹849, is precisely the register to avoid, and I would rather say so than sell you one. Hardware, plainly: past about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, under 38dB, rated to 1000m³ so it runs near the bottom of its range. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Under about 300 sq ft, a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 with no schedule at all. Three standing limits close the method. Fragrance is never a mask for laminate, adhesive, MDF or new joinery - those are curing problems that need ventilation and weeks of time, and a new studio should trade unscented until the smell has gone. It is never a substitute for ventilation, extraction or cleaning. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, order value or a customer's decision to buy a kitchen, and a supplier who offers you a figure has either measured your studio or made it up. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the floor plan with the table marked.
Level for minute ninety, source away from the table, trading-hours timer, key-lock on, designers asked privately. The fragrance choice is fifth and easiest. One Vaayu at ₹11,999 past 1,500 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 under 750, a reed at ₹849 under 300.
The method needs a machine with real controls: a SOSA Vaayu - adjustable intensity with headroom, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, a key-lock and under 38dB operation. ₹11,999. Under about 750 sq ft the honest buy is the Sukoon at ₹1,899, and under 300 sq ft a ₹849 reed with no schedule to manage.
Three honest answers by size. What the method actually depends on is the controls rather than the reach, which is why the ladder matters more here than the specification sheet.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, roughly 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Every step of the method except the fragrance choice relies on one of those controls, which is what you are paying for.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. For a single-room studio this is the honest buy at a sixth of the price. The same five steps apply to it: low setting, placed away from the table, and judged from the chair rather than the doorway.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.
Of the five steps, three carry the weight. Get these right and the other two are administration.

Judge it from the chair
The doorway reading is meaningless and the ninetieth minute is the one that counts
Almost every over-scented showroom I visit was set by somebody standing at the entrance with the door open. That is the least informative place in the building: the air there is being exchanged with the street, and the person doing the judging has a nose that adapts within about twenty minutes anyway. Move the measurement to where the customer is. Sit at the consultation table for a full ninety minutes doing work that occupies you, marking the clock at twenty, forty-five, seventy and ninety minutes with one word each time. If you notice the fragrance again before minute seventy, take it down a step and repeat on another day. Most studios need two or three rounds and almost all of them finish lower than they started.
Tip: A level that is right at minute ninety is always right at minute one. Never the reverse.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
One source, upstream, and as far from the table as the plan allows
Placement is free and it never has to be balanced against anything else. Find where air enters the room - a tissue at the grilles will tell you in a minute - and put the machine there, about a metre up, out of the return's pull, inward from the door rather than at it. The gradient a single source produces then does the shape you wanted anyway: present at the front, quiet at the consultation end. Never add a second unit near the table to even things out. Two sources in one connected volume do not combine into coverage, they meet, and the meeting point is a seam in an aisle. A second machine is for a second volume of air, meaning another floor, its own AC zone or a room with a door that shuts.
Tip: Two metres of extra distance beats any adjustment you can make on the dial.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
They hold the only real measurement, and customers hold none you can collect
Customers will not tell you the room is too strong. They get brisker, less patient and keener to leave, and none of it is ever attributed to the air. Designers will tell you, if you ask each of them privately rather than in a meeting where nobody wants to be the difficult one, and after an ordinary trading week rather than on the day of installation. Treat a hesitation as a no and turn it down the same afternoon, without explaining the specification back to them. Then make sure everyone on the floor knows they can switch the machine off in seconds, without permission, if anyone at the table minds. Somebody who does not want a fragrance around them does not owe you a reason.
Tip: Ask one at a time. Group meetings produce agreement rather than information.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Scenting a consultation-led studio is four decisions about air, time and control, followed by one decision about fragrance - and the industry sells it in exactly the opposite order.
Which is why so many showrooms have a good fragrance running at a bad level from the wrong place at the wrong hours.
Every step needs a control: Adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, key-lock and under 38dB operation are what the method actually runs on. ₹11,999.
Print this, tape it inside the cupboard where the machine lives, and put the setting and the date on the same card.
The SOSA plan
Scenting a studio around long consultations, step by step
The step
What to do
1. Fix the building first
If the studio smells of laminate, adhesive or new joinery, ventilate and wait. Trade unscented until it has gone. Fragrance never covers off-gassing, it adds to it.
2. Place the source
Upstream on the air path, about a metre up, out of the AC return, inward from the door, as far from the consultation table as the plan allows.
3. Set for minute ninety
Start low, leave it a day, then sit at the table for ninety minutes. Just detectable from the street, out of attention once seated.
4. Schedule it
Trading hours on the timer, off overnight, and off entirely before and after any live cooking demonstration until the extraction has cleared.
5. Lock and record
Key-lock on, the number and the date on a card in the cupboard, and a change treated as a decision rather than an adjustment.
6. Audit on foot
Ask each designer privately after an ordinary week, repeat the ninety-minute sit twice a year, and redo it after any change to the air handling.
Three honest answers cover almost every consultation-led studio and showroom, and the method is identical across all three. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you commit to a rollout across branches. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification
The method, and the machine that carries it at each size
Do the five steps in order, write the setting and the date on a card, and repeat the ninety-minute sit twice a year and after any change to the air handling. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like the lighting over your sample tray; it is never a mask for laminate, adhesive or new joinery, and never a substitute for ventilation, extraction or cleaning; and no one can promise you that scent moves a business number, so a supplier quoting you one is selling rather than advising. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
Nearly every enquiry I get about a design studio opens with the fragrance question - which scent, which note, which one is right for kitchens. It is the natural place to start and it is the last decision in the process. Four things come before it, and all four are about air, time and control rather than about perfumery: how low, how far from the table, what hours, and who is allowed to change it. Get those four right with an ordinary dry register and the room is good. Get them wrong with a beautiful fragrance and the room is tiring.
The thing that makes this vertical different is the ninety minutes. I write plans for shops where the whole customer experience lasts less time than it takes your customer to choose a handle, and those rooms can carry a level that would be unbearable at your consultation table. So the method is built around the one seat that stays occupied longest, and it is verified by the people who sit near it every working day. Ask your designers privately, believe them the first time, and remember that customers will never raise it - they will simply go home to think about it.
On hardware I would rather undersell. Past about 1,500 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 for the intensity control, the timers and the lock. Under 750 sq ft a Sukoon at ₹1,899, and under 300 sq ft a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849. If the studio is newly fitted out, buy none of them yet and trade unscented until the fit-out smell has gone. Nobody can promise you a commercial result, and cold-air refill supply should be confirmed with SOSA before any multi-branch commitment. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do I scent a kitchen studio without distracting customers during design consultations?
Five decisions in order. Set the level for the ninetieth minute rather than the arrival. Place the source upstream on the air path and away from the consultation table. Run it on trading hours with a timer. Key-lock the setting so it cannot drift. And take your measurement from the designers who sit there all week rather than from customers. The fragrance choice comes last.
Why ask the designers instead of the customers?
Because customers will not tell you. Raising a fragrance in the middle of a purchase feels petty, so people become brisker and leave instead, and it is never attributed to the room. Designers breathe that air nine hours a day and will answer honestly if asked privately, after an ordinary week rather than on installation day. Treat a hesitation as a no and lower it the same afternoon.
Where should the machine go in a consultation-led studio?
Upstream on the air path, near where air enters, roughly a metre off the floor, out of the air-conditioning return's pull, inward from the door rather than at it, and as far from the consultation table as the plan allows. Never inside a display kitchen and never on a credenza beside the seating. Distance is the cheapest control you have and it costs nothing.
What machine do I need, and what does it cost?
Past about 1,500 sq ft, a SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, rated to 1000m3, waterless, under 38dB, with adjustable intensity, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and a key-lock. Under about 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Under about 300 sq ft, a Mountain Breeze reed at Rs 849 with no schedule at all.
Will getting this right improve how consultations go commercially?
No one can promise that, and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the design work, the samples, the pricing and the designer's manner across a ninety-minute meeting. What this method does is stop the room working against a long conversation, which is a coherence question rather than a commercial one.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
