How SOSA works
Two rungs, honestly: a spray you aim when you choose, or a cordless diffuser that decides for you
A note list is not a smell
Every description here is an intention written in words. It cannot tell you how an oil will sit on your own skin.
Alcohol-free by formulation
A jojoba carrier with no DPG and no ethanol. IFRA-compliant.
One dab, and do not rub it in
A pulse point and a dab applicator. Oil opens with warmth, so rubbing crushes the top of it.
Composed by a trained perfumer
Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained, composes the whole range.
A portion funds girl-child education
Part of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

You have asked the right question and you have asked it the right way round, so I am going to answer it precisely. Of the four axes you named, three can be ranked from published information and one cannot. Compatibility with what you already wear can be ranked. Composition depth can be ranked. Purchase uncertainty can be ranked, and it is the axis almost nobody uses. Likely intensity cannot be ranked by anybody, from any page, because the measurement does not exist - and occasion suitability is a convention rather than a property, so it inherits the same problem. Here is the method that uses what is real and refuses what is not.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I rank shortlisted attars without inventing performance data? Rank the three axes that are knowable. Compatibility: score each candidate against a list of notes you have worn and liked and a list of notes you have rejected, weighting the rejections more heavily. Composition depth: count the notes and read the base, which is published and comparable. Uncertainty: grade how familiar each composition is to you. Compatibility picks the winner, depth breaks ties, and uncertainty decides the size you buy rather than the order.

Why can likely intensity not be ranked from a product page? Because there is no standardised wear or projection test in this category and no attar house publishes a measured projection figure, SOSA included. The only wear figure we publish is 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and it is identical for all four attars, so it cannot separate a shortlist even in principle. A page that ranks two bottles by strength has either reported one person on one day or invented the number.

Can a page tell me which attar suits which occasion? Not as a measurement. Occasion is a convention about what people expect in a particular setting, not a property of an oil, so no page can rank it honestly. The closest legitimate proxy is composition depth, which is published and comparable - lighter compositions at the daytime end of the convention and deeper ones at the other. Use it knowingly, and do not mistake a convention for a measurement.
The short answer
Short answer: Rank on three things: compatibility, composition depth and uncertainty. Likely intensity and occasion suitability cannot be ranked from a product page by anybody, because no attar house publishes a measured projection figure, ours included, and occasion is a convention rather than a measurement.
The pick: Score each shortlisted attar on compatibility, place it on the published depth order, and mark your own uncertainty about it. Then buy a 3ml of whichever ranks first - ₹379 to ₹399 in this range. The ranking tells you what to try first. It does not tell you what you will like, and no ranking can.
Honest note: an attar is bought unsmelled, so a list of notes is all you have. A note list describes an intention, not a smell, and nothing written here is a substitute for wearing it.
Four attars - lightest opening to deepest baseAdaa · Mastani · Ameeri · Nawaab3ml from ₹379  |  6ml from ₹669  |  12ml from ₹1,149Dab on pulse points - oil wants warmth, not rubbing6-8 hours on skin · alcohol-free · DPG-free carrier
There are four SOSA attars and they run from a bergamot-and-cardamom opening at the lightest end to white royal oud at the deepest. Adaa is the freshest, Mastani the most floral, Ameeri the warmest, Nawaab the deepest. All four are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, come with a dab applicator, and wear 6-8 hours on skin - longer on warm or oily skin. Sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, from Rs 379. None of that tells you whether you will like the smell, which is why the smallest size exists.
Straight answer
How do I rank three shortlisted attars honestly, without relying on performance claims?
Rank three of your four axes and refuse the other one. Here is how.

Axis one: compatibility, which is the only axis with real predictive value. Write two lists before you look at any product page. List A: every note you can name in a fragrance you have worn and liked. List B: every note you can name in something you bought and stopped wearing. List B is the valuable one and almost nobody makes it. Now score each of your three candidates: add one point for each note that appears on list A, subtract two for each note on list B, and score zero for a note you have never knowingly worn. The weighting is deliberately unfair, because a note you have already rejected is a far stronger predictor of disappointment than a note you like is a predictor of delight.

Axis two: composition depth, which is published and therefore comparable. Count the notes and read the base. A three-note composition with a floral heart and a nine-note composition with leather and tobacco leaf in it are not the same kind of object, and that difference is visible on the page without anybody having to measure anything. Our four, lightest to deepest, run Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab. Rank your three against the depth you were actually reaching for, which you can usually name in a word or two.

Axis three: uncertainty, the axis your shortlist is really about. For each candidate, ask: have I ever worn anything built like this? Three honest grades. Low - you have worn this family and liked it, and this is a variation on something known. Medium - you have worn the family but not this shape, or you know two of four notes. High - you have never knowingly worn anything like it. High uncertainty is not a reason to avoid a bottle. It is a reason to buy the smallest one.

Now the axis I will not rank, and the reason matters more than the refusal. Likely intensity cannot be ranked from a product page. There is no standardised wear or projection test in this category, no attar house publishes a measured projection figure, and that includes us. The only wear figure SOSA publishes is 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and it is the same figure for all four attars, which means it cannot separate a shortlist even in principle. Where you see one bottle rated stronger than another, somebody has either reported their own skin on one day, which is a data point of one, or made a number up. What to do with a review claiming a specific number of hours is written up separately.

And occasion suitability inherits the same flaw. Occasion is a convention: it is a sentence about what people in a particular place expect, not a property of an oil. The closest legitimate proxy is composition depth, which is why depth is on my list and occasion is not. If you want to use depth as a stand-in for occasion, do it knowingly - lighter for the daytime end of the convention, deeper for the other - and do not mistake it for a measurement.

How to read the three scores together. Compatibility picks the winner. Depth is the tie-breaker when two candidates score the same. Uncertainty does not change the order - it decides the size you buy. A first-placed candidate you have never worn anything like gets a 3ml and not a 12ml, and that is the whole output of the method: a name and a size.

Worked, on this range, for a reader I hear from constantly. Likes citrus and clean woods, dislikes sweetness, has never worn an oil. Adaa scores well on compatibility - bergamot and green cardamom are the only citrus-green opening here and there is no sweet material in the list at all. Ameeri scores middling: sandalwood is a clean wood, but rose and saffron are unknowns and a rose on a creamy wood can read powdery. Nawaab scores low on this reader, because amber is in the base and amber is the usual route to a sweet reading, and nine notes is a lot of unknowns at once. Depth order agrees with compatibility. Uncertainty is high across the board, because the reader has never worn an oil. Output: Adaa first, Ameeri second, Nawaab third, and buy a 3ml of Adaa at ₹379.

Then do the one thing that beats the method. Date the bottle when it arrives and write down what you notice in the first hour and at the end of the day, three times. Your own record on your own skin outranks every ranking on every page, including mine, and it is the only data in this category that was collected on you. A note list is not a smell, and nothing above is a substitute for wearing it. The decision guide for this whole block puts the method next to the four compositions.
Three of your four axes are rankable: compatibility with what you wear, composition depth (published) and your own uncertainty. Likely intensity and occasion suitability are not, because nobody publishes a measured projection figure, ours included. Rank the three, buy the 3ml of the winner.
Start at 3ml. A 3ml costs ₹379 to ₹399 depending on the composition, holds the same liquid as the larger sizes, and is the only honest size for a fragrance you have never worn. Wear it for a week before you buy a size. Nothing on this page can tell you how it will smell on your skin, which is exactly why the smallest bottle exists.
3ml from ₹379

Three axes you can rank, and one nobody can

Three steps, in this order. The third one is the one most shortlists leave out, and it is the step that decides how much money you put at risk.

1
Compatibility
Two lists, and the second one is the useful one
List the notes you can name in fragrances you have worn and liked. Then list the notes you can name in things you bought and abandoned. Score each candidate plus one for a note on the first list, minus two for a note on the second, and zero for anything you have never knowingly worn. The asymmetry is the point: rejection is the stronger signal, and a shortlist scored this way usually resolves itself in about four minutes.
Tip: Write the rejection list first. It is the one that saves you money.
2
Depth
Count the notes and read the base
Composition depth is published, visible and comparable across a range, which makes it the only structural ranking a page can offer you without inventing anything. Ours runs Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab, lightest to deepest. Three notes with a floral heart and nine notes with leather and tobacco leaf are different kinds of object, and you can see that without anybody measuring anything.
Tip: Use depth as your tie-breaker, never as a strength rating.
3
Uncertainty
It sets the size, not the order
Grade each candidate low, medium or high on whether you have worn anything built like it. High uncertainty is not a reason to drop a bottle from the list - it is a reason to meet it in the smallest size sold. A first-placed candidate you have never worn anything like gets a 3ml, not a 12ml, and the output of the whole exercise is a name and a size rather than a verdict.
Tip: Never let a high-uncertainty winner talk you into the largest bottle.
The SOSA principle
List the notes you have already rejected, not the ones you like. A note you stopped wearing predicts disappointment far better than a note you enjoy predicts delight.
Which is why the scoring is deliberately unfair: plus one for a note you like, minus two for a note you have already walked away from.

The four compositions, as inputs to the method

For the method to run you need the note lists, so here they are. Adaa: bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk. Mastani: night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh. Ameeri: rose, sandalwood, saffron, soft oudh. Nawaab: oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk. Depth runs in that order, lightest to deepest, and that order is the only ranking I am prepared to publish.

The SOSA attar range
Each axis, and whether it can be ranked at all
Option When it is the right call
Fragrance compatibility Rankable · from your own two lists · the most predictive axis
Limit: It predicts fit with what you know, not whether you will love something new
Composition depth Rankable · published and comparable · Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab
Limit: It is structure, not strength, and it says nothing about how much room a fragrance takes
Purchase uncertainty Rankable · low, medium, high · decides the size
Limit: It changes what you spend rather than what you choose
Likely intensity and occasion fit Not rankable by anybody · no measured projection figure is published anywhere, ours included
Limit: Our one wear figure, 6-8 hours on skin, is identical across the four and separates nothing

What is identical across the four, and therefore useless as a tie-breaker: alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, IFRA-compliant, dab applicator, hand-blended in small batches in Pune, and 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin. If a comparison table ever shows you different wear figures for these four, the table is wrong and you should treat everything else on it with the same suspicion.

Not sure which of the four is yours?
Tell us the three fragrances you wear most and the notes you cannot stand. If none of our four fits what you describe, we will say so rather than sell you a bottle you will not wear.
Ask first
Uncertainty does not change the order of your shortlist. It changes the size of the bottle you buy, and that is the only honest use for it.

The SOSA attar range

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, hand-blended in small batches in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. There are four, and the honest way to read them is by depth - how much the base note is doing.

The SOSA attar range
Four attars, lightest to deepest - 3ml from ₹379
Attar Built on What it is, honestly 3ml
Adaa Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk The lightest of the four and the easiest first attar. Jasmine sambac is mogra, so this is also the mogra answer ₹379
Ameeri Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh The warm one. Rose and sandalwood doing most of the work, with the oudh kept soft ₹385
Mastani Night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh The most floral. A different jasmine and a different rose from Adaa and Ameeri ₹389
Nawaab White royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, tobacco leaf, amber, leather The deepest in the range. Not a first attar unless you already know you like oud ₹399
The trio Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together Three of the four at once. The honest answer when you cannot choose and will not guess ₹1,055

Four honest notes. A note list is not a smell. Every composition above is described in the words we would use ourselves, and those words still cannot tell you how it will sit on your skin - which is the whole reason the 3ml exists. On the sizes: 3ml, 6ml and 12ml are the same liquid, and the only reason to buy the larger ones is that you already know. If you have not worn it, buy the smallest and let it earn the upgrade. On wear: all four are 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and that is the only figure we publish. We do not publish a drop count, a per-application cost, or a comparison with how long anybody else's fragrance lasts - including sprays. On what we do not make: there is no standalone musk, sandalwood, amber, tuberose, vetiver, khus, aquatic or tobacco attar in this range. Four compositions is the whole range, and where your answer is not one of them, this page will say so rather than talk you into the nearest thing.

A note from Sonal

Attars are the part of this business where the marketing is worst, and I would like ours to be the boring, accurate version. Most of the category sells a bottle on adjectives - royal, exotic, hypnotic, long-lasting - and on numbers nobody has measured. You cannot smell any of it before you pay, so the words are doing all the work, and almost nobody writes them honestly.

So here is what I will and will not tell you. I will tell you what is in each of the four, in the order you meet it, and that they wear 6-8 hours on my skin. I will not tell you that one of them smells expensive, or that it will turn heads, or that it lasts twelve hours, because I cannot know the first two about you and have not measured the third. The honest sequence is: read the notes, buy the 3ml, wear it for a week, and only then buy a size. If none of our four matches what you have described to yourself, I would rather say so than sell you the nearest one.

The other thing worth knowing is how little you need. An attar is concentrated oil, and the commonest mistake is wearing it like a spray - a long press at the neck and another at the wrists. One dab at a pulse point is the dose. Two if you want it read across a dinner table. Do not rub it in; oil opens with warmth, and rubbing crushes the top of it. That is the entire dial, and most people never need the top of it. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

What is the honest way to rank three attars I cannot smell?
Score each on compatibility with notes you have worn and liked, minus the notes you have rejected. Place each on the published depth order. Grade your own familiarity with each. Compatibility picks the winner, depth breaks a tie, and familiarity decides whether you buy a 3ml at Rs 379 to Rs 399 or something larger. That is as far as honest ranking goes.
Can you tell me which of your attars is strongest?
No, and I would distrust any brand that answers that question with a number. There is no standardised projection or wear test in this category, we do not run one, and nobody publishes a measured figure. Our one published figure is 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and it is the same for all four, which is exactly why it cannot rank them.
Why weight disliked notes more heavily than liked ones?
Because rejection is better evidence. A note you bought, wore and abandoned has already been tested on your own skin and failed, while a note you enjoy in one composition may not survive being put next to something else. Plus one for a note you like and minus two for one you have walked away from reflects the difference in how much each tells you.
Does composition depth tell me how long an attar lasts?
No. Depth describes structure - how many notes there are and what the base is made of - and it is useful because it is published and comparable. Wear time is a separate thing, and the only figure we state is 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, which applies to all four equally. Treating depth as a longevity rating is the commonest mistake in this category.
What should I do after I buy the winner?
Date the bottle and write three short notes on it: what you notice in the first hour, what is left at the end of the day, and whether you reached for it again unprompted. Three entries is enough to settle the question for you permanently, and it is the only record in this category that was collected on your skin rather than on somebody else's.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide:
  • Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the fragrance-family guidance applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer.

What this guide does not claim.
  • An attar is a fragrance and nothing else.
A note list is not a smell
  • - it names what a composition is built from and the order you meet it in, which is a description of an intention rather than a measurement, and it is
not a substitute for wearing it
  • . Nothing here should be read as advice about health, allergies or anyone's wellbeing, and no fragrance on this page is claimed to affect anybody's mood, comfort, confidence or state of mind. Where a reader describes a preference none of our four compositions matches, these guides say so and sell nothing.

SOSA attars, specified:
  • four compositions -
Adaa
  • (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk),
Ameeri
  • (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh),
Mastani
  • (night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh) and
Nawaab
  • (white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk). All four are
alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG
  • , supplied with a built-in dab applicator, and hand-blended in small batches in Pune. Sizes are
3ml, 6ml and 12ml
  • : Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179, Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199. The three-attar trio (Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani) is ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189. The same liquid fills all three sizes.

On wear.
  • SOSA publishes one figure:
6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin
  • . SOSA does not publish a drop count, a cost per application, a projection rating, or any comparison with how long another format or another company's fragrance lasts. Where a customer review reports a different number, that is one person's experience of their own skin and not a measurement SOSA stands behind.

On what is in the bottle.
  • The composition lists above name the materials a fragrance is built from. They are not a statement of grade, percentage or geographic origin, and this guide makes no claim about either. Where origin or grade matters to you, ask before you buy - that is a fair question and the answer belongs to the product page rather than to an article.

On other companies.
  • Where another fragrance brand is named in these guides it is because a reader named it, and the page answers what they asked. Nothing here states what any other company's product contains, how long it lasts, what it costs or how it performs.
Other brands named are the property of their respective owners · SOSA is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or associated with any other fragrance company named on this page
  • , and no other company has reviewed or approved this content. If a product you already own suits you, keep it - several pages in this guide say exactly that.

On availability.
  • SOSA is an online fragrance house and ships across India; it holds no retail counters, and no delivery window is quoted here. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Prices and availability change - see the live product pages.
