How SOSA works
Two rungs, honestly: a spray you aim when you choose, or a cordless diffuser that decides for you
A note list is not a smell
Every description here is an intention written in words. It cannot tell you how an oil will sit on your own skin.
Alcohol-free by formulation
A jojoba carrier with no DPG and no ethanol. IFRA-compliant.
One dab, and do not rub it in
A pulse point and a dab applicator. Oil opens with warmth, so rubbing crushes the top of it.
Composed by a trained perfumer
Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained, composes the whole range.
A portion funds girl-child education
Part of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
We will tell you not to buy
There are four attars. Where your answer is not one of them, these guides say so and sell nothing.

This is the guide page for this section, and it is built to be done with a pen rather than read. The premise is simple: your three favourite fragrances already contain the brief you are trying to write, and the reason most people cannot act on it is that they have the brief stored as three names rather than as a description. Names are no use to anybody. A description of what those three have in common is the single most useful thing you can bring to a fragrance purchase you cannot smell first, and it takes about twenty minutes to produce. The seven steps below are the ones I would walk through with you if you wrote to us, in the same order, including the step where the honest answer turns out to be that none of my four fits.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I build a fragrance profile from the perfumes I already like? Describe each of your three favourites in your own words twice - at ten minutes and at two hours - then convert each description into an accord label such as fresh aromatic, polished oud, saffron sweet-amber or fresh rose-musk. What the three share is your profile and what they do not share is your range. Then list your dealbreakers, decide how close you want the fragrance worn, and only then look at prices.

Which step matters most? The two-hour sentence, and the dealbreakers. Almost everybody can describe a fragrance's opening and almost nobody has paid attention to where it ends up, which is where most of the wear actually happens and where shelves repeat themselves. The dealbreakers matter because they eliminate faster than preferences do: one specific dislike such as powder or sweetness rules out more candidates than three vague likes ever will.

What if my profile does not match any SOSA attar? Then the method has worked and the answer is to buy nothing from us. There are four compositions in the whole range and the gaps are genuine: no lavender, no orange blossom, no vanilla, no standalone musk or sandalwood, no amber-led composition, no tuberose, no vetiver or khus, no marine-aquatic and no tobacco-led attar. Several pages in this guide reach that conclusion, and we would rather publish them than sell somebody the nearest thing.
The short answer
Short answer: Describe each favourite in your own words at ten minutes and at two hours; convert each description into an accord; take the overlap as your profile and the differences as your range; list your dealbreakers; decide how close you want it worn; do the budget sum; then map the profile onto the four attars.
The pick: Whatever the method points at, buy it at 3ml - ₹379 to ₹399. The process narrows a hundred possibilities to one or two, which is exactly what it is for, and it still cannot tell you how an oil will sit on your skin. If the overlap lands on something we do not make - lavender, marine, vetiver, a standalone musk - the method has still worked and the answer is to buy nothing here.
Honest note: an attar is bought unsmelled, so a list of notes is all you have. A note list describes an intention, not a smell, and nothing written here is a substitute for wearing it.
Four attars - lightest opening to deepest baseAdaa · Mastani · Ameeri · Nawaab3ml from ₹379  |  6ml from ₹669  |  12ml from ₹1,149Dab on pulse points - oil wants warmth, not rubbing6-8 hours on skin · alcohol-free · DPG-free carrier
There are four SOSA attars and they run from a bergamot-and-cardamom opening at the lightest end to white royal oud at the deepest. Adaa is the freshest, Mastani the most floral, Ameeri the warmest, Nawaab the deepest. All four are alcohol-free on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, come with a dab applicator, and wear 6-8 hours on skin - longer on warm or oily skin. Sizes are 3ml, 6ml and 12ml, from Rs 379. None of that tells you whether you will like the smell, which is why the smallest size exists.
Straight answer
How do I turn my three favourite fragrances into a profile that tells me which attar to buy?
In seven steps, with a pen. The first four cost nothing and do most of the work.

Step one: describe, do not name. Write down your three favourites and then cover the names up, because they are the least useful thing about them. For each one, write two sentences in your own words: what it smells of in the first ten minutes, and what it smells of two hours later. Not the marketing copy, not the official note list, what you actually smell. "Sharp lemon and something green, then soft and slightly soapy" is worth more than any list of eight notes, because it is your nose rather than a press release. If you cannot do the two-hour sentence, wear the fragrance tomorrow and come back - that sentence is the most valuable one on the page.

Step two: convert each description into an accord. An accord is a family label, and this is the vocabulary that lets you shop across brands and across formats. The common ones in this category: fresh aromatic, herbal and bright with a dry middle; citrus-aromatic with smooth woods, bright on top with a creamy floor; saffron and sweet-amber, a dry bright spice over resinous warmth; polished oud, resinous wood with its sharp edges kept in check; fresh rose-musk, a dewy rose on clean musk; white floral, jasmine or blossom led; spicy-woody, pepper and cardamom over wood; marine-aquatic, ozonic and open-air; dry vetiver, earthy and austere; floral-amber, flowers over a vanillic resin. Put one of those labels on each of your three. If one of them needs two labels, write both.

Step three: find the overlap and the spread. Now look at the three labels together. What they share is your profile. What they do not share is your range, and it tells you how adventurous you can afford to be. If all three are variations on bright and clean, you have a narrow profile and should buy within it. If one is a fresh aromatic, one is a polished oud and one is a white floral, you have a wide range and practically anything in a four-attar catalogue is a fair bet. Pay particular attention to what all three finish on, because a shared base is the strongest signal in the whole exercise and the one almost nobody notices about their own shelf.

Step four: write the dealbreakers, and be specific. This step eliminates faster than everything above it combined. Not "I do not like strong things" but "I cannot stand anything powdery", "sweetness makes me feel sick of a fragrance by lunchtime", "smoke is a no", "I have tried oud twice and both times it went sour on me". In this category the five dealbreakers that come up most are the camphorous top of oud, the animalic facets of oud, heavy sweetness, powder, and a rose that gets denser as it goes. Each of those rules out at least one of our four immediately, which is why I ask for them before I ask about budget.

Step five: decide the radius you actually want. An attar is undiluted oil, dabbed at a pulse point, alcohol-free, and it is met by people who come close to you rather than by the room. One dab is the dose, two if you want it read across a dinner table, and rubbing it in crushes the top of it. All four are 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and that is the only wear figure we publish - no comparison with any other format or company, because there is no standardised test behind such a claim. If what you want is a fragrance that fills a room, say so now and the whole format may be wrong for you.

Step six: the budget arithmetic, against real prices. A 3ml is ₹379 for Adaa, ₹385 Ameeri, ₹389 Mastani, ₹399 Nawaab. A 6ml is ₹669 to ₹699 and a 12ml is ₹1,149 to ₹1,199, the same liquid in all three sizes. The trio of Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani is ₹1,055 at 3ml. At 6ml the trio is ₹1,859. So: ₹500 buys one 3ml and leaves change. ₹1,000 buys two 3mls and a proper comparison. ₹1,500 buys a 12ml of anything in the range. ₹2,000 buys a 12ml and a 3ml, which is a committed bottle plus an experiment. ₹3,000 buys the 6ml trio at ₹1,859 with a good deal left over. The full budget and size guide does this arithmetic in more detail.

Step seven: map the profile onto what exists. Here is the map, and it includes the gaps, because a map without them is a sales brochure. Bright, clean, citrus profiles land on Adaa: bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk. Warm rose and smooth wood profiles land on Ameeri: Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh. Floral profiles that want depth land on Mastani: night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh. Dark, resinous, spicy profiles land on Nawaab: white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk. And the gaps, which are real: no lavender, no orange blossom, no vanilla, no standalone white musk, no standalone sandalwood, no amber-led composition, no tuberose, no vetiver or khus, no marine-aquatic and no tobacco-led attar. If your overlap lands on one of those, the method has worked perfectly and the answer is to buy nothing from us.

Three worked examples, so you can see the method fail as well as succeed. One. Three favourites all citrus-aromatic with a smooth woody floor; dislikes sweetness and powder; wants it close. Overlap: bright and dry. Answer: Adaa 3ml at ₹379, with the caveat that it closes on white musk rather than on wood, so the floor they like is the part that will be missing. Two. Favourites are a saffron sweet-amber, a polished oud and a spicy-woody; dislikes fresh citrus openings. Overlap: dark and resinous with a dry spice. Answer: Nawaab 3ml at ₹399, or the trio at ₹1,055 if they want all three depths of oud at once. Three. Favourites are a fresh rose-musk, a marine-aquatic and a lavender floral-amber. Overlap: clean, light, not woody. Answer: nothing here, and keep the three bottles they already own. That third example is not a failure of the method. It is the method working.

And then, whatever the map says, buy small. The process narrows a hundred possibilities to one or two, which is a real achievement, and it still cannot tell you how an oil will behave on your skin in your climate. That is not a limitation of this guide, it is a limitation of writing. A note list describes an intention. Buy the 3ml, wear it for a week, and let it earn the 6ml. Which of the four to buy first is the shortest version of this page, and ranking three options by risk of disappointment is the version for readers who have already narrowed it down.
Describe, convert, overlap, eliminate, decide the radius, do the sum, map it. Seven steps and twenty minutes with a pen produce a better brief than any quiz. Then buy at 3ml, ₹379 to ₹399, because the method cannot predict your own skin.
Start at 3ml. A 3ml costs ₹379 to ₹399 depending on the composition, holds the same liquid as the larger sizes, and is the only honest size for a fragrance you have never worn. Wear it for a week before you buy a size. Nothing on this page can tell you how it will smell on your skin, which is exactly why the smallest bottle exists.
3ml from ₹379

The three steps people skip

Seven steps in the method and three of them are routinely skipped. These are the three, and skipping them is why most self-assessments produce a brief that fits everything.

1
The two-hour sentence
Describe where each favourite ends up, not just how it opens
Openings are easy to remember and tell you the least, because they are the briefest part of any fragrance and the part that changes most between formats. Where a fragrance ends up is what you wear for most of the day, and it is where collections turn out to repeat themselves. If you cannot write that sentence for all three favourites, wear them this week and pay attention in the afternoon. The twenty minutes you spend on it will change the purchase.
Tip: Three two-hour sentences are a better brief than any quiz on any website.
2
Dealbreakers
Specific dislikes narrow the field faster than preferences
Write them as sentences about materials and effects: powdery is a no, sweetness tires me by lunchtime, smoke is out, oud went sour on me twice. In this category those four sentences alone would rule out most of a catalogue, which is exactly what you want them to do. Vague dislikes - too strong, too old-fashioned - rule out nothing, because every fragrance can be described that way by somebody.
Tip: One precise dislike is worth three vague likes when you are shopping unsmelled.
3
The gap check
Check your overlap against what the range does not contain
Before you look at a single product page, read the gap list: no lavender, no orange blossom, no vanilla, no standalone white musk or sandalwood, no amber-led composition, no tuberose, no vetiver or khus, no marine-aquatic, no tobacco-led attar. If your profile lands there, you have saved yourself the whole exercise of talking yourself into a near miss. A four-composition range has gaps, and knowing them is as useful as knowing the four.
Tip: Check the gaps before the catalogue. It is faster and it is honest.
The SOSA principle
Your three favourites already contain your brief. The problem is that you have it stored as three names, and names cannot be shopped with.
Describe them at ten minutes and at two hours. That is the whole trick.

The map, including the gaps

Bright and clean profiles land on Adaa, 3ml ₹379: bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk, the lightest of the four. Warm rose with a creamy wood lands on Ameeri, 3ml ₹385: Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh. Florals that want depth land on Mastani, 3ml ₹389: night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh. Dark, resinous and spicy lands on Nawaab, 3ml ₹399: white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk. Depth order, lightest to deepest: Adaa, Mastani, Ameeri, Nawaab.

The SOSA attar range
Profile in, bottle out
Option When it is the right call
Bright, clean, citrus overlap Adaa 3ml ₹379 · bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk
Trade-off: Finishes on musk rather than wood, so a woody floor is missing
Warm rose and smooth wood overlap Ameeri 3ml ₹385 · Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh
Trade-off: A warm rose throughout, which is wrong for a fresh-rose profile
Dark, resinous, spicy overlap Nawaab 3ml ₹399 · oud, saffron, pepper, cardamom, tobacco leaf, amber, leather
Trade-off: The deepest of the four, and not a first attar for everybody
Overlap lands on a gap Buy nothing · no lavender, marine, vetiver, vanilla or standalone musk here
Trade-off: None. The method worked and the answer is no

The gaps are part of the map. There is no lavender, no orange blossom, no vanilla, no standalone white musk or sandalwood, no amber-led composition, no tuberose, no vetiver or khus, no marine-aquatic and no tobacco-led attar in this range - four compositions is all of it. If your overlap lands on one of those, the right outcome of this exercise is to buy nothing here, and several pages in this guide end exactly that way. Tell us what the overlap was and we will say honestly whether any of the four is worth your money.

Not sure which of the four is yours?
Tell us the three fragrances you wear most and the notes you cannot stand. If none of our four fits what you describe, we will say so rather than sell you a bottle you will not wear.
Ask first
The best outcome of this method is not always a purchase. If the overlap lands on lavender or vetiver or the sea, it has worked properly and the answer is that I have nothing for you.

The SOSA attar range

Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG, hand-blended in small batches in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. There are four, and the honest way to read them is by depth - how much the base note is doing.

The SOSA attar range
Four attars, lightest to deepest - 3ml from ₹379
Attar Built on What it is, honestly 3ml
Adaa Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk The lightest of the four and the easiest first attar. Jasmine sambac is mogra, so this is also the mogra answer ₹379
Ameeri Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh The warm one. Rose and sandalwood doing most of the work, with the oudh kept soft ₹385
Mastani Night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh The most floral. A different jasmine and a different rose from Adaa and Ameeri ₹389
Nawaab White royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, tobacco leaf, amber, leather The deepest in the range. Not a first attar unless you already know you like oud ₹399
The trio Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani together Three of the four at once. The honest answer when you cannot choose and will not guess ₹1,055

Four honest notes. A note list is not a smell. Every composition above is described in the words we would use ourselves, and those words still cannot tell you how it will sit on your skin - which is the whole reason the 3ml exists. On the sizes: 3ml, 6ml and 12ml are the same liquid, and the only reason to buy the larger ones is that you already know. If you have not worn it, buy the smallest and let it earn the upgrade. On wear: all four are 6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin, and that is the only figure we publish. We do not publish a drop count, a per-application cost, or a comparison with how long anybody else's fragrance lasts - including sprays. On what we do not make: there is no standalone musk, sandalwood, amber, tuberose, vetiver, khus, aquatic or tobacco attar in this range. Four compositions is the whole range, and where your answer is not one of them, this page will say so rather than talk you into the nearest thing.

A note from Sonal

Attars are the part of this business where the marketing is worst, and I would like ours to be the boring, accurate version. Most of the category sells a bottle on adjectives - royal, exotic, hypnotic, long-lasting - and on numbers nobody has measured. You cannot smell any of it before you pay, so the words are doing all the work, and almost nobody writes them honestly.

So here is what I will and will not tell you. I will tell you what is in each of the four, in the order you meet it, and that they wear 6-8 hours on my skin. I will not tell you that one of them smells expensive, or that it will turn heads, or that it lasts twelve hours, because I cannot know the first two about you and have not measured the third. The honest sequence is: read the notes, buy the 3ml, wear it for a week, and only then buy a size. If none of our four matches what you have described to yourself, I would rather say so than sell you the nearest one.

The other thing worth knowing is how little you need. An attar is concentrated oil, and the commonest mistake is wearing it like a spray - a long press at the neck and another at the wrists. One dab at a pulse point is the dose. Two if you want it read across a dinner table. Do not rub it in; oil opens with warmth, and rubbing crushes the top of it. That is the entire dial, and most people never need the top of it. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the official note lists of my favourite fragrances?
No, and they are often a distraction. Your own two sentences per fragrance - what it smells of at ten minutes and at two hours - are more useful than a published list of eight notes, because a note list describes an intention rather than what reached your nose. Convert your own description into an accord label and shop with that.
What if my three favourites have nothing in common?
Then you have a wide range rather than no profile, and that is good news: almost anything in a four-attar catalogue is a fair bet for you, and your dealbreakers become the main filter instead of your preferences. Readers with a narrow profile have an easier time choosing and a smaller field; readers with a wide one should lean on what they cannot stand.
Which size should I buy once the method gives me an answer?
The 3ml, between Rs 379 and Rs 399 depending on the composition. The method narrows the field and cannot predict your skin, so the purchase is still partly a test. The 3ml holds the same liquid as the 6ml and the 12ml. Wear it for a week and let it earn a larger bottle.
How far does Rs 1,500 go in this range?
It buys a 12ml of any of the four - Adaa Rs 1,149, Ameeri Rs 1,165, Mastani Rs 1,179, Nawaab Rs 1,199 - with change left over. Whether that is the right use of Rs 1,500 is a different question: if you have never worn the composition, two of the smallest bottles for a proper comparison is usually the better spend - Adaa and Ameeri together come to Rs 764 - and the rest stays in your pocket until you know.
Can I just send you my three favourites and ask?
Yes, and that is the shortest route. Tell us the three fragrances you wear most, the notes you cannot stand, how close you want it worn and what you want to spend. If none of the four fits what you describe, we will say so rather than sell you a bottle you will not wear - several pages in this guide exist only to say exactly that.

About this guide:
  • Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the fragrance-family guidance applies to any brand. SOSA does not sort fragrance by the gender of the wearer.

What this guide does not claim.
  • An attar is a fragrance and nothing else.
A note list is not a smell
  • - it names what a composition is built from and the order you meet it in, which is a description of an intention rather than a measurement, and it is
not a substitute for wearing it
  • . Nothing here should be read as advice about health, allergies or anyone's wellbeing, and no fragrance on this page is claimed to affect anybody's mood, comfort, confidence or state of mind. Where a reader describes a preference none of our four compositions matches, these guides say so and sell nothing.

SOSA attars, specified:
  • four compositions -
Adaa
  • (bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac, white musk),
Ameeri
  • (Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron, soft oudh),
Mastani
  • (night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, oudh) and
Nawaab
  • (white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, black pepper, cardamom, aged tobacco leaf, amber, leather, white musk). All four are
alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant on a jojoba carrier with no DPG
  • , supplied with a built-in dab applicator, and hand-blended in small batches in Pune. Sizes are
3ml, 6ml and 12ml
  • : Adaa ₹379 / ₹669 / ₹1,149, Ameeri ₹385 / ₹679 / ₹1,165, Mastani ₹389 / ₹685 / ₹1,179, Nawaab ₹399 / ₹699 / ₹1,199. The three-attar trio (Ameeri, Nawaab, Mastani) is ₹1,055 / ₹1,859 / ₹3,189. The same liquid fills all three sizes.

On wear.
  • SOSA publishes one figure:
6-8 hours on skin, longer on warm or oily skin
  • . SOSA does not publish a drop count, a cost per application, a projection rating, or any comparison with how long another format or another company's fragrance lasts. Where a customer review reports a different number, that is one person's experience of their own skin and not a measurement SOSA stands behind.

On what is in the bottle.
  • The composition lists above name the materials a fragrance is built from. They are not a statement of grade, percentage or geographic origin, and this guide makes no claim about either. Where origin or grade matters to you, ask before you buy - that is a fair question and the answer belongs to the product page rather than to an article.

On other companies.
  • Where another fragrance brand is named in these guides it is because a reader named it, and the page answers what they asked. Nothing here states what any other company's product contains, how long it lasts, what it costs or how it performs.
Other brands named are the property of their respective owners · SOSA is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or associated with any other fragrance company named on this page
  • , and no other company has reviewed or approved this content. If a product you already own suits you, keep it - several pages in this guide say exactly that.

On availability.
  • SOSA is an online fragrance house and ships across India; it holds no retail counters, and no delivery window is quoted here. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Prices and availability change - see the live product pages.
