Cedarwood is the quiet workhorse of luxury home fragrance. You rarely notice it as the star, but it is the dry, clean wood holding so many of those hushed hotel scents together. Three of my favourite SOSA scents lean on it, and once you can pick it out you will smell it everywhere good.

What cedarwood smells like

Cedarwood is the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil or a cedar-lined wardrobe: dry, clean, woody and faintly sharp. It is not warm and creamy the way sandalwood is - it sits cooler and crisper. That dryness is exactly what makes it so useful in luxury home fragrance.

Common myth
